One more time!
by hardwatr on 2010-07-22Casino Rama - OrilliaWith the exception of 1 song, I Am What I Am, Merle Haggard and his band, The Strangers, played oldies all night long. The mostly gray-haired audience could be heard singing along with many of the tunes. The opening acts included his older son, Noel, who sang a couple of songs and two brothers (their names escape me because they weren't mentioned anywhere but on stage). The twins played and sang some traditional country and western. They had a lot of energy, nice voices, and their song choices were great! Merle was met with a standing ovation, and then settled into singing his best known tunes. He played some decent licks on his guitar, and even played the fiddle during one of his songs. The evening drew to a close with one more rendition of Okie from Muskogee, and then the audience was asked to stand for his tribute to the military and battle cry, Fightin' Side of Me. The evening finished with a single song, I Am What I Am, from his latest album. And then that was it. He walked off the stage as the band played on. The PA announcer once again reminded the audience that $45 T Shirts and other over-priced memorabelia was available outside the concert hall, and everyone lined up in an orderly fashion and waited their turn to leave the venue. Too bad Merle didn't include any more of his latest album, it would have been great to have heard them done live. Oh well, over the years, casino shows at Rama have all had things in common... uncomfortable seating, listless audiences, over-priced souvenirs, standard hits, no encores, and feelings of emptiness after it was all over. Good luck, Merle, and happy trails!
