The Hag is The Real Deal

by Sweeper on 2010-03-14Red Robinson Show Theatre - Coquitlam

This show was full of surprises .. starting with opening act Noel Haggard, one of Merle's son's. Looks and sounds like Daddy .. go figure. Then 2 brothers from Carolina who cover old time country songs from the likes of Faron Young and Waylon. Then it's time for Mr Merle Haggard who showed us why he is one of the best . And of course an amazing band backing all the artists, which included Merle's youngest son, Marty on lead guitar at 17 years old!!! Some good musical genes in that family. So refreshing to once again have an evening of real traditional country music. The Real Deal !!

    Haggard still a legend

by Carmie on 2010-03-13Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - Calgary

His voice was in good form. Still a good picker after all these years too. Brought out the classics, plus a few new songs. His older son who opened for him looks and sounds just like him. Merle's 17 year son was his lead guitar picker. That boy has an amazing career ahead of him.

Merle is still a good entertainer & singer. Enjoyed everything but the seating. Would go again but watch what seat we got.

Merle was great. It seamed to take him a little bit to really relax and enjoy himself. He was very funny and has an amazing voice. Certainly couldn't tell he is 73. His sons were really good too.

We enjoyed the show. Other than a few cowboys behind us drinking beer and talking through the whole thing the show itself was awesome. Loved the opening acts and Merle was great of course. Met all of our expectations.

    smooth

by Anonymous on 2010-03-10Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - Calgary

Merle has still got it after all these years. A little older, a little slower, but still sounds smooth. His band sounded great and his young son can play a mean guitar

Pretty good with a good opening band. Did not play "Mama Tried", "Sing Me Back Home" or "Daddy Frank".

IT was great to see Merle and hear some of the original country music played. The Music that alot of us were raised on. Absolutley nothing beats the original country !!!! We need more of it these days.

Merle Haggard was awesome! But the sound of the whole thing was bad. His vocals needed to be turned up and the fact that the sound went up and down so much wasn't great.

Having a chance to see Merle Hagard in this comfortable smaller setting was great. I would go night after night to hear all of his songs. The facility was excellent, the staff helpful as we had never been there before and the music fabulous. The only thing I would have liked to see was one more song with the White Calgary hat on his head! Enjoyed the opening acts and loved the performance it certainly met our expectations.

    Merle still has it!

by CalgaryCoach on 2010-03-10Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - Calgary

Great concert by a true legend in country music. Even at his age, Merle can still sing, play and peform at a top level. Great sound and a few good laughs. Also good to see his son's on the road performing with him and his band (The Strangers).

    A Master at his craft

by CountryFan on 2010-03-10Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - Calgary

A true country classic master at his craft, well worth the moment in time and a true country artist without all the big pumped up sound systems, very little talk and all business and he gives what his fans what, true entertainment.

    The Hag @ rivercree

by CameoGirl on 2010-03-09River Cree Resort & Casino - Edmonton

We enjoyed the show of what we could see and hear. No tiered seating made it difficult to watch the show live, Had i wanted to watch it on big screen i would have purchased a video. I don't mind seeing others enjoying their evening, having a drink or two, or singing along, clapping and having fun thats what they paid for. We happen to be seated in an area where all they seemed to want to do is drink and talk, either to us ( about things other then the show) or each other, no we don't know any of them. Making a lot of noise and talking so loudly we couldn't hear most of the show. They were constantly getting up and down making us move so they could either get in or out of there seats to get another drink. They couldn't seem go together so when one got up another was just returning. I would love to attend a few other shows that i saw advertised but think it would be a waste of money if i can't enjoy what i paid for.

    Good Old Stuff!!!

by Nibbles on 2010-03-09River Cree Resort & Casino - Edmonton

It was nice to see one of the older performers perform. Merle and his band did a terrific job. (Even with his son in the trailer). It brought back alot of memories growing up riding in the back seat of my fathers old Pontiac travelling to Manitoba from Alberta.

by bjbb on 2010-03-08River Cree Resort & Casino - Edmonton

Was a really good show. His son opened and did a good job.The next act was a couple of hillbillies-"sure got a pretty mouth!"but they also sounded good.Merle was fantastic although quite short for all of the great music that he has, wish the show was longer!

    Expected more

by Anonymous on 2010-03-08River Cree - Edmonton

There was no encore to the 8pm show and he failed to play the classics Rainbow Stew, Mama Tried or Okie from Muskogee. I felt a little disappointed knowing that these songs were played at the 5pm show (which was added after we bought tickets to the 8 pm show.) Overall it was a good night and we enjoyed the show. But hearing those songs would have taken the night from a 7 to a 10+!

by PamG on 2010-03-08River Cree Resort & Casino - Edmonton

Enjoyed the show. He can sing as good as ever! Hard to believe these guys have been on the road 45+ Years!! On the down side, I thought the show was too short for the price paid.
