    Embarresing

by SM on 2023-10-22Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

The moderator totally messed up! She should just give the stage to racialized women who could have done a way better job! especially when we've got the first black first lady there, and this clueless white lady doesn't know what she's doing with issues of black women! Step aside and let other young folks from marginalized groups take over and do a better job at moderating, just like Michelle said!

Michelle was incredible, moderator was cringe

by Deanna on 2023-10-22Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

I know it was a big life event for the moderator to interview Michelle. But she was not well-researched at all. If she had read Michelles first book she would have known all of these questions had already been answered. They’ve also been answered a million times over in other interviews. There was no depth to the questions, and no follow up. At one point, I thought maybe the questions were submitted by children. But no. There were no questions about Michelle’s current initiatives, challenges, accomplishments, goals, etc. The interview was all over the place but Michelle handled it gracefully. If not take the time to read Michelle’s books, if the moderator/event team had watched other interviews perhaps the questions could have been more interesting. Anytime Michelle stopped talking and the moderator started commenting/asking the next question, I would tense up and start to sweat. It was embarrassing, honestly, as she was representing Nova Scotia. Michelle even had to check the moderator at certain points and it was so hard to listen to. I know I am not the only person who feels this way. Even the girls next to me had their head in their hands at certain points during the interview. I appreciate it was a great honour for the moderator, and she can feel proud of her accomplishment, however, I feel moderating is not for her and someone else would be much better suited for future events.

    Long-time fan

by AEB on 2023-10-22Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Very high energy, and very positive experience. She is a great speaker, she seems so honest and real. The event was well-organized, people were moved through quickly. Only comment, she and the moderator were seated in two chairs facing each other, angled to the audience. From our seats on the side, we could see her only in semi-profile. It would have been a good idea to have the two exchange seats half way through, so those of us on my side could have seen her face more easily.

Michelle brings the nicest people together

by Jill on 2023-10-22Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

From the beginning to the end of the evening, it was the people at the event that gave me hope. The vibe was so positive. All shapes, sizes, colours, ages.......we all came to hear amazing woman speak to us. Nothing earth shattering happened. It was just calm......fun.......lighthearted. What I found surprising was that there were no advertisements for the evenings event anywhere around the Scotia arena, nothing that we could find where we could even take a picture. Yet the place was packed. Michelle Obama is an inspiration! And Barak too. :)

    The Moderator

by Rebecca on 2023-10-22Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

We love Michelle!! But the moderator, Diane, could have asked better questions. Michelle seemed confused about the questions she was being asked but handled it so well. Diane also interrupted Michelle a few times while she was speaking.

    Interesting!

    by A. T. on 2019-10-21FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

What was the purpose of the evening? Book promotion? Lecture? Or just a way to try to do a fundraiser from her and her title?? The answers to the questions and comments were heard in the past from Oprah, Ellen and other interviews in the past. It seemed all rehearsed. She mentioned really interesting and inspiring comments and the interviewer never kept the trend of thought and missed out on the opportunity. Also to top it off... the Raptors... And the indirect comments or questions regarding Trump... again that had no place at all ... The sound was awful, the screens were not set for us to see comfortably and clearly unless you looked over your shoulder. We are living in a world of so much uncertainties, insecurities, we are looking for encouragement, à since of security and motivations to face what’s is ahead. You could tell by the reaction of the public in attendance key comments they were grasping and applauding to and the interviewer didn’t grab the opportunity to elaborate. * the challenges she faced, what worked and didn’t, how is the program doing and what will the future bring... how to garantie a continuation??? Thank you for the experience. I travelled a long distance to attend. The First Lady is so interesting, captivating, diplomatic, compassionate, a true lady! Liked the concept of pictures on the screen to quick start the conversation. Use it for someone who needs to be known...

    Totally Inspiring

by Lola on 2019-10-16FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

The evening spent listening to Michelle Obama speak was well worth the price and time. She is an amazing speaker, and very engaging. She spoke of her experiences and memories with such grace, intelligence and emotion, it was almost as though you were right there with her during her time growing up. I would definitely recommend that if you get the chance to hear her speak...you should go!!!

    So fortunate

by Laurel on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

The entire event was well-organized and highly successful. I was very impressed by the interviewer. He created an engaging and enjoyable environment, one that enabled Michelle Obama to relax and be herself.

    Love Michelle but disappointing event.

by Barb on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

Event MC’d by 3 white, middle-aged men: one to welcome crowd, one to tell us about the interviewer, and the interviewer, who just asked her to talk about stories that were in her book. No probing questions; no reflections since leaving the White House; no comments on current events. 2 screens, both at same end of arena, too small and poorly placed so didn’t enhance the visual experience at all.

Enjoyed. Felt it to be a little short expected 2 hours. Huge traffic jam after.

    by L.olo on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

I loved reading Becoming but seeing Michell Obama live was even better! She is such an intelligent, thoughtful, humorous, kind, open, and loving woman. Everyone should hear her powerful message of hope and our ability to affect change.

Paid Too Much for A Little Over an Hour

by Disappointed Fan on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

Overall, this much anticipated event, left me feeling letdown and short changed at the end of a very short evening. Michelle Obama was fabulous, despite the detached, dull interviewer. It should have been a woman introducing her and it definitely should have been a woman who interviewed her. An experienced reporter would have been much more effective - someone like Lisa LaFlamme or Pamela Wallin would have been able to draw Michelle out and would have sparked a more interesting conversation. I would preferred to have Michelle talk directly to the audience for the opening introduction or at the end of the evening. When Michelle was speaking with her usual passion, it was inspiring. I came away with a few wonderful pieces of advice and learned a few interesting stories or insights not in her book. However, the interviewer didn't engage effectively with her or encourage her to speak more on any of the topics - it was a very one sided conversation. Her wonderful answers were usually met with, 'Ah, yes. Ok,' then right onto the next question - was the interviewer even listening to her? At the end, I was stunned and shocked that the event just ended - without any clear indication that the evening was about to end and then it was just over. It took more time getting to the event and leaving the event, than the actual event itself. I would not recommend this event to any of my friends and I would not plan to attend anything like this in the future at this venue.

    An Evening with Michelle Obama

by Honey R on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

Michelle Obama is a fantastic speaker who carries herself with grace and dignity. Her stories were interesting and funny. My work group attended the event and we all enjoyed it thoroughly but were extremely disappointed that she only spoke for an hour. We thought that there was an intermission and were shocked to find that it was the end of the event. I would have expected her to be on stage for at least two hours,

    Michelle Obama in Hamilton

by WMac on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

Michelle was exceptional as I expected. I thought she and the audience would have been better served had she not been questioned by a middle age, white guy in a suit from Toronto. Surely there was a capable woman in Hamilton who could have interviewed her like Sunni Genesco, Annette Hamm or Denise Christopherson? The message was incredible, I thought it would have been nice to hear what great things are happening in Hamilton and surrounding communities and how the 13000 in attendance could get involved and help make a difference. I consider myself lucky to have a chance to hear her. She exudes grace and poise. Thank you for your service!!

    Short but sweet

    by ValleyMom71 on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

Michelle was an engaging speaker, but it was a short show for the money. Would have been fun if someone like Martin Short could have hosted and maybe done a half hour or so pre-show.

    Wonderful

    by gonzoflex1 on 2019-10-15FirstOntario Centre - Hamilton

I hadn't read her book before, and I was a guy - making me a distinct minority in this crowd. I got the tickets as a present to my partner who read the book and liked it. Michelle was a wonderful speaker, and came across as a genuine and accomplished individual. Very very rare to see. I've had the privilege of meetings and seeing quite a few world leaders speak in person (US Presidents, Canadian PMs, Sr Diplomats, IMFs etc), and she's at the very top of the list.

Michelle Obama lights up the room!

by Leslie on 2019-10-15Canadian Tire Centre - Ottawa

Warm, empathetic, genuine, Michelle Obama speaks from the heart, with humour and intelligence, sharing with her audience a very personal reflection on her life. Her vision of hope, possibility, potential inspires us all to be kind, to know our strengths, to reach out to others, to pull people up and to encourage positive, kind, thoughtful approaches to life. She is also realistic, her choices have not always been easy, people in her orbit have not always been kind. As it is with any human being, she has had times in her life that have felt overwhelming. One feels she understands. This is one powerful person. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to hear her speak. I wish the whole audience had been able to sit close by, but there were so many of us. That, also, was really good to see.
