Minnesota Timberwolves History

The Timberwolves joined the NBA in the 1989 expansion that also brought the Orlando Magic into the league. The Wolves struggled during their first seven seasons, but the arrivals of first-round draft pick Kevin Garnett, general manager Kevin McHale and head coach Flip Saunders signaled a turnaround. The franchise earned its first playoff berth in the 1996–97 season — the first of eight straight years in the postseason — and its first winning record a year later.

In the 1999–00 season, led by Garnett and rookie Wally Szczerbiak, the Timberwolves posted their first 50-win season, the first of three straight years they reached that milestone. But it was not until the last year in that streak that they advanced past the first round of the playoffs.

With guards Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell joining the Timberwolves for the 2003–04 season, the team won their first division title and first two postseason series, eliminating the Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings. They ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

After Garnett was traded away in 2007, the team rebuilt around all-star Kevin Love, but failed to make the playoffs during his tenure in Minnesota. They ended a 13-year drought without a playoff appearance by finishing 47-35 in the 2017–18 season, good for second place in the Northwest Division. In 2024, All-Star center Rudy Gobert earned the franchise’s first Defensive Player of the Year Award, while backup center Naz Reid won the Sixth Man of the Year Award.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center

As the Minnesota Timberwolves play their fourth decade at Target Center(Opens in new tab), the arena is much-changed from the building that first hosted the young franchise in 1990. The Target Center has undergone three significant renovations over the years. The last round of upgrades were unveiled at the outset of the 2017–18 season, with a newer exterior and a three-story atrium over a new entrance, home to the iconic statue of George Mikan.

    Timberwolves have a great young squad, they just need a little more finish to close-out their scoring opportunities. Spurs showed their broad and deep bench with even the second team playing with quickness, teamwork and scoring skill. Tony Parker had a great game and we got to see Wiggins and Bennet our Canadian boys. We also watched a Wolves Shoot-out game and the quality of high school play was excellent. The Rice (WI) team had a very powerful 6'10" center that scored 37 of their 73 points in a close 77-73 game against one of the local teams with a deeper bench and better defensive play.

    One of the best games I've seen so far. The wolves and the rockets definitely put on a show. It was nice to see all the NBA stars as well.

    The NBA and Timberwolves put on a great show, providing excellent entertainment value. We had gone to a Vikings game (NFL) and Wild game (NHL) this weekend as well, in our opinion the T-wolves organization put on the best show surrounding the game. Can't wait to go to another.

    Laid out $180 for 2 tickets. Drove 7 hrs to game. Plus hotel costs, yatta, yatta. Am seated in lower level. Place is 80% empty while Nets do their layup line. Go down to about row 5 to try to take picture of Paul Pierce, my daughter's favourite player. Not blocking anyone's view. Nowhere near court level. Long time before game is to begin. Usherette aggressively tells me that I have to move---no one behind me.... I explain the desire for the Pierce pic. She grumpily says "Do it fast." Smartphone doesn't focus fast and first try when he's on my side of court doesn't get a good shot. She then orders me to go. I explain I haven't had a good shot yet. She orders me to go. I get these TWolves "deal" emails in which they're begging people to come. Most of the upper level is empty, and corners of bottom level as well; yet they have a fan who goes through great effort to come to a game, and they treat him like crap for no apparent reason. No more of this for me---will watch from home!

    Even in the cheap seats I had a great view of the game and had a great night with great value for money. Game was good as was the entertainment in between plays. If the NBA comes back I would definitely go again and recommend to others.

    With over 12,000 fans in attendance, the Timberwolves and Pistons entertained the MTS Centre crowd. Great seats, cheerleaders & mascots easily won over the fans.

    My spouse, 14-year-old granddaughter and I attended this game. We had excellent seats 8 rows up from court so an excellent view. There was a lot of pre-game hype and warm up by the Timberwolves host (who does this at the Target Centre in Minneapolis), contests galore, sometimes, in my opinion, to the annoyance of both teams. I would hate to try to discuss strategy during a time out with all the hoopla going on in the background, and the noise. But, all in all, it was a well-played game. Our granddaughter loves basketball and was just floored that we got tickets to see the game. This is definitely a must-see event and I for one hope it returns to Winnipeg in 2013 - count us in!
