The lopez nussa trio were in a word fantastic. The blending of classical and Latin music was creative and undulated back and forth.

    King Arthur was memorable

by Ormsby on 2011-08-13Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

The early music consort played with great attention to the lyric gifts of Purcell. The choir and soloists were well balanced. The intimate scale of the performance brought out every detail, even if it may have sacrificed some evocations of the drama in the libretto. A note to the Chan Centre: the air conditioning should have been turned on the hall was unconfortably hot all evening.

    Tuneful talent

by wastewar on 2011-08-11Norman Rothstein Theatre - Vancouver

Lorraine Desmarais' tuneful, talented trio was a delight. What wonderful Canadian talent! Audience was very appreciative of this great performance. A lovely evening of melodic music.

Trio Paul Klee was outstanding. They are clearly passionate about the music they play and very well matched as a trio.

    Stunning!

by wastewar on 2011-08-09Christ Church Cathedral - Vancouver

The women of the Lafayette Quartet are brilliant. Their performance was heavenly; their playing, magical. The ladies put so much into their music and infuse it with emotion, strength and tenderness. They are not just playing, they are living each note. Can't wait to hear them again!

This trio was unfogettable - in a wrong sense

by Jazzguy on 2010-08-15Norman Rothstein Theatre - Vancouver

Adrian Iaies is a good jazz pianist but what the trio showed during this performance was unbelievable. My party left at the break. In at least 2 compositions out of 5 played in the first half there was a clear discoordination between the players - in one the drummer was drumming loud and totally out of rhytm in another the bass player's part was clearly not in line what the piano played. I am a musician myself but I would be ashamed to publicly perform on this level. Adrina kept talking about how tired he is and he is going to take a nap during the intermission. That is fine but they should have then cancelled the concert and give people their money back instead.

    Supernatural noir less than super

by listener on 2010-08-15Vancouver East Cultural Centre - Vancouver

This operetta is blessed with fine performances and really good music. Alas, the story line is slow-moving, cliched and hard to follow. Even if the performers were able to ditch their binders (which contained their scores) and move around more quickly I think the first act would seem interminable. Joe Trio, which provided the music, David Adams, Laura Di Cicco and Matt Palmer all did a nice job in their respective roles. But the material? No, thanks.

    Supernatural Noir

by Gemini47 on 2010-08-13Vancouver East Cultural Centre - Vancouver

Frankly, I couldn't understand why the actors were "reading' from a script!! The operatta "score" was hardly musical. It was a spoken "melody" (if you could call it that)! Too bad! It was really funny when the detective was attempting to hold the script while in an embrace and kissing scene!! This should have been a simple drama with the amazing back up by the three musicians.

    Annoying

by rubyblack on 2010-08-13Vancouver East Cultural Centre - Vancouver

Because it was an in-concert event (whatever), the singers/actors read their parts from binders, which was totally distracting and ruined the whole piece. They should have committed it as a play and memorized their lines.

    Noah and Sharon in church

by listener on 2010-08-13Christ Church Cathedral - Vancouver

Yannick-Muriel Noah has a big, wonderful voice that effortlessly hits the high notes and ranges widely. A charming stage presence is a bonus for this young Canadian soprano. However, the echol in Christchurch Cathedral was unforunate, weakening the power of Noah's performance. Rena Sharon's piano solo was delightful, filling the church without the irritating echo that marred Noah's sound.

    Walked out

by Soupy82 on 2010-08-13Vancouver East Cultural Centre - Vancouver

so i was excited about the idea of this, funky Jazz operetta with a interesting plot. BUT: -they carried around binders and read from them. No one knew there lines or what they were singing. The harmonies and the fact that they didn't know the words were MORE apparent when they tried to sing together. this obviously wasn't practiced. When i first saw the binders i figured it was for prompt just in case someone forgot something since it was opening night. But NO they were flipping and reading and looking down pretty much the whole time. -the singing was sub par, but the female lead was by far the strongest -The wardrobe and set were very good. Although the set was used VERY poorly in terms of lighting and showing that they were in different places. For $75 dollars i was insulted to pay this much, i have paid $10 for a high school play that was more polished and had higher production value. Don't waste your money on this event.

Van Django with Bria Skonberg-a must see

by Bellachella on 2010-08-11Norman Rothstein Theatre - Vancouver

I took my 16 year old niece and 80 year old mother to this concert and we ALL loved it. The clarinet/sax player and Chris the drummer all made for a perfect mix as well. I loved every minute of it except the sound man should have adjusted for a few very high and very loud trumpet and clarinet notes that were painful to the ears. I would absolutely go to see this group again - and would hope for the same guest additions, too! Thank you for a brilliant evening.

    Ludus Monotonous

by fredthehead on 2010-08-11Christ Church Cathedral - Vancouver

Beautiful voices, unremarkable music, and a very forgettable concert. Despite the good intonation and lovely individual voices, the group failed to come across as a cohesive ensemble. There was little dynamic variation, and little drama in the delivery of these pieces. Perhaps the programming was partially at fault. The singers had their noses in their scores for the most part, and the leader of the group dictated an unexpansive performance and clipped the endings of almost every piece. The concert never got off the ground.

    AMAZING.....as always

by julia7 on 2010-08-10Norman Rothstein Theatre - Vancouver

I saw this group for the first time at MusicFest last year and was blown away. The Van Django quartet on their own or in concert with "friends" never fail to deliver first class entertainment all the way. Performance is full on from start to finish and they never disappoint. Loved it, Loved it, Loved it.

    Good music, bad audience

by Anonymous on 2010-08-09Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The music was really good, unfortunately the audience was not that good with the musicians. Some people left the auditorium 15 min before the concert finished, not very friendly with the musicians. There was a few problems with the sound when Poncho's Band was playing, but it was good at the end.

It was a stellar performance by Concerto Köln and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I would not book seats in the first row again, though. It was too close.

Excellent choice of music for the summer fest, musically beautiful interpretation of Bach.
