    A competent performance

by Rosetta123 on 2012-01-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The score is so famous that a merely competent performance --- like this one --- will keep the audience interested. Generally a good cast, but disappointed in Oliver and Nancy. The production should use more young performers who look like children. It is very hard to imagine a grown man as little Oliver, and his voice is too low to sing the high notes that we have come to expect from Oliver's songs.

    Oliver!

by Ballpoint on 2011-12-31National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Thought the cast and musicians were phenomenal.....with one glaring exception. Oliver was dreadful. The poor man couldn't sing and his acting consisted for holding his hands under his chin and trying to look fearful. Fagin was wonderful and some of the lesser characters had the best voices.

    Show was good, Oliver wasn't

by thumpers on 2011-12-31National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

For a production of a classic musical, it was actually pretty well done. The only major flaw was the actor who played Oliver was very miscast. He was a very weak singer, and acted more like a five year old boy, than a 12 year old orphan. In fact, the overacting was a bit much. The performance of the Artful Dodger and Fagan were brilliant however.

    Excellent Family Affair

by Ardnas on 2011-12-31National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Our family loved Oliver! It was a wonderful way to spend an evening together during the Christmas season. This was our first time seeing a production in the theatre at the NAC and no matter where you were sitting, you had a great view and could really get into the story. The acting and singing were great, the group numbers very lively and animated. Thank you so much for offering this wonderful play/musical for all ages to enjoy!

    Oliver was disappointing.

by cassie42 on 2011-12-30National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Oliver would have played much better if it had been in it's original form. Other than Fagan and the Artful Dodger (strange to see a female in this role but she performed the part very well) I thought the performances very lackluster.

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed Oliver Twist. The actors were superb and the transitions from scene to scene were well done!! I would definitely recommend this play to all my friends!! It was my first time in the English Theater. I intend to attend more often!! Congrats to the staff!!

    Exceeded my expectations!

by ArtsAndCultureLover on 2011-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I wasn't sure I'd be keen on the role of children played by adults but I was really impressed by this show. There are some fantastic performers in this production. The set was also well thought out and used creatively throughout the performance.

    Great cast!

by Winter1 on 2011-12-27National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The show was very nice - the singing, the interpretation of the play but really the actors were spectacular. We need to see them in shows more often. Great cast, one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

    Oliver is amazing

by mutantcomx on 2011-12-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was the best show I've seen at the NAC in quite awhile. Great talent that came alive during this production. Looking forward to see what comes next.

    Oliver

by TundraDweller on 2011-12-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I thought that the over-reliance on high-knee stepping revealed a weakness in the cheorgraphy in general: a lack of imagination. The man who played Oliver portrayed him as a 5 year old rather than a 13 year old, which was at times rather difficult to watch and made me cringe. The second half was much stronger and showed Dickens' serious message. The unstudy who played Nancy on the night that I saw it was excellent, as were Bill Sykes and Fagen.

    Oliver

by Soul5 on 2011-12-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Production was well done, but didn't like non traditional approach using adult Oliver. Very distracting. Also the adult Oliver looked like an adult trying to act like a kid instead of a kid trying to act like an adult.

    Fagan was great!

by Monforte on 2011-12-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I must admit that overall the show was very good thanks especially to dodger and fagan; however, I was rather disappointed with Oliver. I felt that he looked older and the singing was average.

good effort by a small group on an open stage. You really needed to know the story before going. Nancy's relationship with Bill Sykes was poorly developed -- and also very late on. Bodger added nothing to the production and could easily be removed. In actual fact he/she was distracting. Songs were well sung and good use made of the individual microphones. Musical accompaniment was too powerful on occasions. very difficult to play Oliver with an adult.-- it might have been a better part for a female playing the part of a boy.

    Disappointing

by BMKL on 2011-12-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I expected a higher caliber of performance. This production was generally not well casted. Children should play children and cast members should be able to sing. The role of Oliver Twist calls for a boy soprano. Performances by Artful Dodger and Fagin were great.

    Oliver

by sfm2 on 2011-12-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Admirable production with many fine performers. However, the actor playing "Oliver"was completely miscast. He looked embarrassed to be on the stage; he was, as well, the weakest singer. This casting mistake came close to ruining a well directed musical.

Generally, good. One question - why were adults playing the roles of children? Children should have been in the musical....orphans are not adults.

    "Oliver" was poorly done!

by badlady on 2011-12-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

"Oliver Twist" was my most favourite Charles Dickens Classic when I was a young person. I read it over and over. Therefore, we were very disappointed in the English Theatre's production of "Oliver" for the following reasons: ) You cannot have adults playing children's parts especially if some females are very big busted! It was obvious that older men were playing some of the parts also. Not believable! 2) Oliver was portrayed as being a black person. He was not black in the classic story. The same for Mr. Bumble! 3) The singing was questionable at the best of times. Not good! Some was off-key! 4) This was not worth $65/seat

    Oliver fell short

by theaterfan on 2011-12-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The staging was OK. The coreography was average. Most actors were not good singers, therefore the charm in the songs was lost. The director lost all opportunities to make it funnier, and the biggest dissapointment: no child actors! My son had a hard time believing that Oliver was a child, and this is a story that is close to his heart. It was OK, but I wouldn't recommend it.
