NAC Orchestra shines with Jack Everly

by Anonymous on 2015-03-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great evening of entertainment with the Orchestra and Jack Everly. Music selection was varied and entertaining and we particularly enjoyed the conductor's commentary - casual, informative and fun. We would have preferred far fewer vocals. The singers were very good but at times it looked like a cruise ship variety show. Their many solos took away from the orchestra which was the real reason for coming to the show. Will be back for more of this amazing orchestra!

    Outstanding Talent

by Robert345 on 2015-03-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My wife and I attended the Classic FM: Three Decades of Radio Hits, this past weekend. WOW, what a night. The vocalists, cellos, Trumpets, violins, oboes, etc. were all phenomenal. So much energy and talent on one stage. Josh Turner...what outstanding and amazing skillset; at the young age of 22... unbelievable. This event has risen the bar on entertainment, and it will be challenging to beet it. The musicians and all individuals involved with this event, should be commended for their efforts. WOW, what a night.

    Fun Concert

by Stcollis on 2015-03-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The guest vocalists all had great voices and lots of pizazz. The full orchestra brings out the best in pop music. The pieces chosen brought back many fond memories.

    NAC Orchestra Impeccable

by Anonymous on 2015-01-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

One of my favourite films paired with the incredible NAC orchestra: what's not to love? The conductor's timing was flawless and I had to keep looking to make sure it was actually the orchestra playing and not the film's soundtrack! Sadly, the first half was marred by someone who felt it was acceptable to talk during the performance, including the need to give away key comedic moments before they took place on screen. I only mention it because the NAC ushers handled my concern with grace and found me a better seat for the second half of the performance. They truly saved my night, and I would recommend the NAC as a venue to anyone interested in the performing arts.

    Upbeat and fun evening!

by MuskegMan on 2015-01-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was an interesting and enjoyable experience. It's a great movie with truly wonderful dancing. The NAC Pops Orchestra and conductor Jack Everly are world class. I really enjoyed the performance and I left feeling so upbeat and humming the tunes. The NAC advertised this event with the movie being "projected on a 60-foot screen above the stage", and so I selected seats further back. However, the screen was closer to 16-foot, measured diagonally. Having enjoyed the opening-night performance immensely, I decided to attend a second performance. This time, my seats were front and center, and the performance was equally enjoyable, and the immediacy allowed me to appreciate better the work and talent required to coordinate the live orchestra and film. If you likely musicals, this one is a lot of fun. Congratulations go to all involved. http://nac-cna.ca/orchestra/event/7654

Music of Michael Jackson was great!

by Gladdys on 2014-12-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Overall it was a wonderful experience and completely enjoyable. My only complaint is that the orchestra drowned out the singer(s) for the faster upbeat songs. When the slower or emotional songs were sung, he was easy to hear and has a great voice. I enjoyed watching the crowd as much as watching the show. This was due to the soundman vs the venue or seat location.

Excellent music choice, great performance. Congrats to the main singer for not paying too much attention to the groupie in the front row, she could be very distracting.. great marriage of NAC orchestra and "rock band"

    Windborne's Music of Michael Jackson

by Soundbombin on 2014-12-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great show, but weak crowd. No energy, only when asked the crowd would stand up and really enjoy the music. Best to attend this show with a better crowd that really appreciates MJs music.

Chester could sing like Michael Jackson. However, his dancing was only passable and his personality was pitiful. The sound was off until the fourth or fifth number. The core musicians were far too loud, overpowering the NAC orchestra. Unfortunately, the orchestra was only able to shine for two or three numbers in the second set. I went expecting to hear the music of Michael Jackson. What I was presented with was a tribute. Michael Jackson was an exceptional singer, dancer and composer. He was not a god. Chester's stories on growing up in Gary, Indiana and his infatuation with Michael were unnecessary. I did not attend to hear about Chester's life. If the producers felt that they had to present something in addition to music, perhaps they could have had a story line of Michael's life. Bottom Line: Did I get value for my money? Not in this case. The NAC orchestra was essentially superfluous. And Chester was not worth the price.

Michael Jackson not up to snuff

by Merk on 2014-12-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This is the first time in many years that we left before the show was over. There was spot light issues and the sound was terrible. At times you couldn't even hear the main singer. To top it off, we were sitting in the Mezzanine and it was extremely hot! this is the second reason we left and also the second time that the NAC has been way too hot. The last piece featured? a high school student...obviously, there had been no rehearsal and what should have been the show stopper looked ridiculous....add to that a couple of little kids on stage just standing there. The main character lacked dance technique although his voice was good, the costumes were very laid back. We were very disappointed in the show and many people left at intermission.

    Fabulous but strange ending

by Happycustomerca on 2014-12-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The whole performance was terrific. Great singing and excellent music and high energy. BUT the show seemed to end so abruptly....there was no real opportunity to show the orchestra and singers our appreciation. There was no opportunity for an encore. Very different from any show I have ever attended.

    Fantastic!!!

Michael was just spectacular. What a charmer, entertainer, wonderful pianist and not to mention singer/ interpreter. His stories go a long way to making the evening a wonderful event. Would recommend and would definitely go see him again. Thanks for a fantastic show.

    Lovely Evening

by Reilly on 2014-10-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Lovely voice and interesting stories and the old standards made for a wonderful evening. My only complaint is that Michael only did one encore as I could have stayed and listened all night long. NAC orchestra was very good as well.

    Some notable themes missing

by Cagedwolf on 2014-06-27National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The theme song to the 1984 Olympics and NBC news were showcased but nothing from Jurassic Park? And only a hint at the famous Jaws theme? Sort of disappointed that the conductor would go in that direction. But it was still awesome to hear the themes to Star Wars and Indiana Jones live.

    Music of John Williams Delivers

by crazytrain411 on 2014-06-25National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Amazing performance - the works of John Williams will no doubt be classics 100 years from now and be performed along the likes of Mozart. The added touch of having movie characters int he lobby was simply amazing - they really didn't have to do that. I would have enjoyed hearing more background on some of the pieces.
