    Romeo and Juliet Ballet

by Val on 2023-02-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I feel so very fortunate to have bought the tickets to this wonderful event! My husband and I had row F orchestra seats but to be anywhere there in the theatre to experience this would have been wonderful. The dancing was spectacular with such talented performers who connected with their audience.. I was surprised at the second intermission as was everyone we spoke to. I did not read that anywhere. We missed the last act…but we were very happy with what we saw. I feel though that better communication is required and that you should honestly go back to wroien booklets for us.. something to take home as a memory..they still do that in New York..we met lovely people that night as well! A night to remember.

    R & J

by J on 2023-02-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was the best performance of Romeo and Juliet I’ve ever seen. The costumes, tge scenery, the smoothness of moving from scene to scene- the choreography and dancing. Everything was spectacular

Fabulous constumes, sets, music and of course, the dancing.

by Sharleen on 2023-02-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Although the total event was almost three hours, time flew by. Each scene was more beautiful and entertaining than the last. The only minor "flaw" I could find was the finale death scene with the poison. Juliet woke up to find Romeo dead...and drank some of his left-over poison!! I think it would have been much better/clearer if he had stabbed himself, thinking her dead, then she had stabbed herself when she found him dead. There were three earlier deaths by sword-fight stabbing, so this would have been a more convincing ending (for me.) However, loved the whole performance anyway.

    Najinski is not a ballet

by Desbert13 on 2018-01-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This highly kaotic interpretive dance had so little ballet in it that it became the most painful experience at the NAC. I kept hoping that it would improve but they doubled down by bringing in a mime to complete the castration of my senses.

    Spellbinding Artistry

by BelfastProgeny1 on 2018-01-28National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The National Ballet's performance of Nijinsky was stunning. The precision of movement, artistry of storytelling, and sheer beauty of the dance captured our interest, attention and hearts from the first second. The performers paid tribute to the tortured soul that was Nijinsky in the perfection of execution of John Neumeier's ballet. Bravo! Bravo! Bravissimo!

    Skip this one

My fault for not finding out more before I purchased tickets, but the National Ballet is usually a safe bet for a lovely traditional production, and given the photo that is attached to the advertisement I thought this was no different. I bought tickets for my dance enthusiast daughter and myself and neither of us enjoyed it. We actually left at the intermission. This is NOT suitable for children and it was not the traditional ballet offering that the promotional material might lead you to believe.

    La Sylphide was delightful!

by BBCT on 2016-04-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was a delight from start to finish (well except for the sad ending). The dancing was world class. The only thing was it was too short! We all wanted to see more dancing.

    Disappointing

by Warbaby on 2016-04-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We were really looking forward to this ballet, but we were underwhelmed - the story line is dismal, the dancing was uninteresting and the costumes were dreary. The corps de ballet was very good, especially in the second act. If the programme had explained that this ballet is very early and that the seemingly simplistic steps, especially of the male lead, are very challenging, we might have been more appreciative. The programme was very disappointing again - where are the dancers bios? We try to see any National Ballet productions that we think we will enjoy, but this was not one of them.

    La Sylphide was Exceptional

by Dasein on 2016-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I truly enjoyed the experience even in the very back row of the balcony, it was an exceptional experience for my first time seeing a professional production of a ballet.

    Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-WORTH IT!

by BalletMama on 2015-04-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

There is nothing about this ballet that isn't amazing! The colourful costumes, the interesting and over the top special effect and the perfect dancers! My 13 year old barely blinked through the whole show. It is almost 3 hours long so maybe too long for little ones.

    Great ballet for kids

by Anonymous on 2015-04-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

A wonderful performance full of very entertaining dance, music, costumes and clever sets. It kept my little seven-year old girl in awe throughout the ballet and she is still talking about it days later. There were so many highlights from the creative Cheshire Cat marionette, to the tap dancing Mad Hatter. My girl still wished she could be Alice so she could do beautiful pirouettes and leaps. I would recommend attending a matinee for under 10 crowd, just because it is three acts and I think my daughter would have been too tired by the end of the evening show. We also used a small seat riser (booster cushion) provided by the usher, which really helped my daughter's view.

    A little long

by Mitanoff on 2015-04-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My 8yr old enjoyed the show, but is was a little long (2 hr 45min including 2 intermissions). Hubby wasn't so much impressed with the ballet part, but with the props. I actually thought some of the women's costumes detracted from the ballerinas' movements. Couldn't see the legs. Not sure why Alice was a brunette and wearing lavender. However, my only familiarity with the story is from the cartoon, not the book. I enjoyed the comedic aspect of the Queen's dance towards the end.

This was just an unbelievable visual spectacle. The sets where amazing, the costumes where amazing... The dancing was amazing... It was clear that a good team of designers was involved and no expense was spared in creating this product

This was my first ballet and I thought it was amazing! All dancers were great. Loved the sets, costumes and artistic vision. The way the sets were used to tell the story was such a great idea. Would definitely recommend!
