I went to this concert because I love Nelly's music and I think it is great what she has done as a Canadian musician. But I left feeling that she is really disconnected from her followers and she has not figured out who her core audience is.
The music from her "I'm like a bird" era is disconnected from her "Folklore" era which is even more disconnected from her "Loose" (Maneater, Promiscous Girl) era. Watching her perform these songs live it became apparent that there really is no common thread between these song. For a person like myself who loves "Say what you want" and "Forca", I found Nelly displayed great, heartfelt, authentic passion when she sang them. However the showy, bombastic performance of the "Loose" numbers felt manufactured and noisy. The songs from the different eras simply did not blend together during this night.
Further, the show could have benefited by a Screen of some sort so that you could get close up's of Nelly's face and her other performers. We were in the 20th row, and with the lighting the way it was it was very difficult to make out any kind of emotion on the faces.
Lastly, I was surprised by the awkward banter that Nelly had with audience. It was NOT natural and free-flowing. It seemed like she was reading from a script or performing a canned routine. As a result, this was an impediment for her to develop a genuine connection with the audience.
Judging by the number of empty seats in the audience (about 50% of the seats were empty) it appears Nelly has some work to do to figure out who her audience is.
