OPETH IN CONCERT:

Swedish progressive metal rockers Opeth are all about keeping listeners on their toes. The band's technically virtuosic jams are a study in contrast, juxtaposing brutal guitar riffing with soft acoustic passages and blood-curdling death growls with melodic choruses. Their live shows play up these opposing elements perfectly, hitting fans with a maelstrom of moods and textures that run the gamut from heart-pounding to serene. At the center of it all is frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, a magnetic performer whose dynamic voice and wild-eyed intensity is the driving force behind ambitious compositions like "Sorceress" and "Will O The Wisp." He's joined on stage by a motley crew of shredders who keep the energy cranked to the max on guitar, bass, drums, and Mellotron – a unique keyboard instrument that lends an eerie, otherworldly vibe to the band's songs. Metal fans looking to have their minds blown continue to turn out in droves to see Opeth play, and they're never disappointed by the band's hard-hitting, adventurous sounds.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Opeth formed in Stockholm in 1990 and spent their early years playing a straight-ahead brand of death metal featuring blast beats and aggressive vocals. By mid-decade the band had begun incorporating elements of jazz, blues, and even classical, and their 1995 debut album Orchid was roundly hailed by critics for its unique blend of styles. The band released three more albums in the '90s but didn't start touring until the release of 2001's Blackwater Park. That album sold nearly 100,000 copies in the US alone, a major feat that drew the band out on their first world tour. By the end of the '00s Opeth was a fixture on the Swedish charts, and American audiences weren't far behind – both 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion cracked the Top 20 on the US Billboard 200. The band released their 12th studio album Sorceress to another round of critical acclaim in 2016, and followed up with more face-melting sets on their Sorceress World Tour.

    Mastodon Rocked the Venue!!

    by MICHY26 on 2012-05-04Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

All the band were awesome to watch. Ghost played a really great, but short set, and Opeth was amazing, but I really came to see Mastodon and they did not disappoint! They were not only super high energy, but they played a really great set and you could hear everything. I think they blew the other guy out of the water. I would definitely see a show like this again!!!

Ghost was a great opening act, and Mastodon and Opeth were simply unforgettable. I only wish they had been able to play longer sets.

Rocked hard with Mastodon and Opeth

by lespaul98 on 2012-04-09Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

More concerts should take place at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts! I'd love to see Dream Theater play there, or Karnivool. I liked that a heavier band played in a theater. I really liked the atmosphere and I just think its an amazing venue. The staff are great, its nice and clean, its big but not stadium big which I like. Anyways, these bands were amazing. Both Mastodon and Opeth exceeded my expectations. They played a lot of their new stuff, which is expected, but also played a fair amount of their older stuff. I'd definitely see them both again. I do wish Opeth's set was longer...It seemed a little short. 2-3 more songs would've been good. Overall, the sound was good. The lead guitar during Mastodon could've used a volume boost. It cut through well during Opeth's set, even when they played their heavier stuff.

    Amazing Set!

by LindsayLynx on 2012-04-09Sony Centre for the Performing Arts - Toronto, Ontario

It was an amazing night - awesome venue, Ghost had great showman-ship and stage presence. Mastodon does sound better on their album but they had insane energy. I'm glad Opeth was last - they were definitely the reason I went. And they were perfect! Mikael's vocals were outstanding and he said some hilarious things in between songs. I loved every minute!

    Yah Opeth

by Pliny on 2012-04-09Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I attended the concert with my 2 kids (17 and 18). Ghost came on first and although I hadn't expected much from the opening act, they were quite entertaining with the right amount of religious satanism on display with a touch of humour. Mastodon, although I liked their recorded efforts was disappointing live. The played too loud for anyone to hear the detail in the songs and there was not much if any effort to connect with the audience. Opeth were great. Sound was amazing and they played a good mix of old and new stuff (even a Dio cover!). Very much recommended! Mikael as always was his charming and low key self and really connected with the audience. I'd see them again in a heartbeat. It'll be interesting to see if Ghost hits more mainstream popularity. Mastodon should take a note from Opeth and play more to their technical ability and for cryin' out loud talk to the audience who are paying to see you.

Opeth put on an amazing show!

by Merauder on 2012-04-09Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The venue was the perfect place to showcase bands like these! The night opened with Ghost, a newer band from Sweden, musically they were pretty good, and put on an interesting show. After them was Mastodon, who were terrific! They played songs back to back, and were in great form, very tight band. 'Black Tongue', and 'Curl of the Burl' were the highlights for me personally from them. If you have never seen this band live, you must try to catch them!! Then Opeth took the stage after a short intermission, been an Opeth fan for a long time now, and this show reinforced why I like them so much, they are a 'must see' band live, this is where they really shine! Playing selections from their latest album 'Heritage', along with songs from past albums, and ending the night with 'The Leper Affinity', Fantastic!! Such an amazing band, the new members of the band played like they have always been with Opeth. As usual, Mikael Åkerfeldt's interaction with the audience was great, his subdued and layed back nature are always a hit with the crowd, and helps add to the overall ambiance that is Opeth!

    Opeth Rocks!

by Erocks on 2012-04-09Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

It was interesting seeing these metals bands at a seated venue. The crowd was tame, but it was a nice change to seeing Opeth while not getting mauled from all sides in a mosh. Ghost sounded awesome, and they had cool outfits. Very tight sound overall. Mastadon did not sound as good as Ghost or Opeth. Their sound was a bit too loud, making it hard to distinguish each instrument, and the vocals were very difficult to understand. Opeth sounded amazing. The played mostly newer music and ended with some heavies. It was mixed in stereo so if you weren't sitting center, the sound would not seem balanced. Bad idea of the Opeth sound crew. The only downside is that they seemed to be on a time constraint; Mastadon had to rush through every song with not a single rest in between, and Opeth did not play enough. Overall a great show by all bands!

    Opeth and Mastodon

by OpethFan on 2012-04-08Métropolis - Montreal

I was disappointed with the time left for Opeth because Mastodon played for a long time in a non-stop style in a disrespectful way,They've not even the songs name for the public.

    A good show but..

by Hightower on 2011-11-12Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I greatly enjoyed the show, but believe it would have been much better had Opeth mixed it up a little and played some more heavier songs, felt I was being lulled into a sleep by then end, though it was good. Katatonia, well..... whats with the backing tracks? The drummer spent as much time on the laptop hitting the space bar as he did playing, and from what I observed it was completely unnecessary, there were times the drummer was sitting there doing nothing, but there were still drums playing. Was not too impressed by that.

Opeth Put on a freaking amazing show; however, it did seem to kind of drag on near the end. They probably should have played a few heavier songs to help keep the energy going.

    Awesome band - horrible venue

by somedudewhowenttotheshow on 2011-11-01Guelph Concert Theatre - Guelph

The opening touring band Katatonia went on before over half of the people attending the concert were still outside queuing in line. There was almost no room inside the venue with the place being literally packed to every wall - pretty sure it was oversold by at least 300 tickets.. At one point, I wasn't allowed inside the concert area after going to the bathroom because I had "to wait for the crowd to thin out." After explaining to security that it's not going to thin out and that he was being stupid, i went back in. Opeth was amazing.
