OPETH IN CONCERT:

Swedish progressive metal rockers Opeth are all about keeping listeners on their toes. The band's technically virtuosic jams are a study in contrast, juxtaposing brutal guitar riffing with soft acoustic passages and blood-curdling death growls with melodic choruses. Their live shows play up these opposing elements perfectly, hitting fans with a maelstrom of moods and textures that run the gamut from heart-pounding to serene. At the center of it all is frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, a magnetic performer whose dynamic voice and wild-eyed intensity is the driving force behind ambitious compositions like "Sorceress" and "Will O The Wisp." He's joined on stage by a motley crew of shredders who keep the energy cranked to the max on guitar, bass, drums, and Mellotron – a unique keyboard instrument that lends an eerie, otherworldly vibe to the band's songs. Metal fans looking to have their minds blown continue to turn out in droves to see Opeth play, and they're never disappointed by the band's hard-hitting, adventurous sounds.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Opeth formed in Stockholm in 1990 and spent their early years playing a straight-ahead brand of death metal featuring blast beats and aggressive vocals. By mid-decade the band had begun incorporating elements of jazz, blues, and even classical, and their 1995 debut album Orchid was roundly hailed by critics for its unique blend of styles. The band released three more albums in the '90s but didn't start touring until the release of 2001's Blackwater Park. That album sold nearly 100,000 copies in the US alone, a major feat that drew the band out on their first world tour. By the end of the '00s Opeth was a fixture on the Swedish charts, and American audiences weren't far behind – both 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion cracked the Top 20 on the US Billboard 200. The band released their 12th studio album Sorceress to another round of critical acclaim in 2016, and followed up with more face-melting sets on their Sorceress World Tour.

Best Opeth show I've ever seen

by kudiah on 2011-10-31The Warfield - San Francisco

With their ever-expanding palette of mind blowing musical diversity Opeth continues to deliver. The lighting and stage design of the show were also the best I've seen at an Opeth concert. Venue was great to. I never miss a chance to see these guys. The opening band Katatonia was amazing as well. Typically though, I feel that every live show I go see of any band is too loud. I"m always on the verge of wanting earplugs in.

    Amazing! Talented!

by Purgatori on 2011-10-18Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

The show opened with a band I was not too familliar with, but I was blown away by the feeling and energy put out by the members of Katatonia. The crowd was awsome! Opeth is, beyond a doubt, one of my favorite bands. They were so unbeleivable to watch play. Was a bit slower than I expected. Kind of remenicent of Pink Floyd. The Commodore Ballroom had amazing sound. One of the best shows I have seen to date.

    Opeth was amazing once again!!!

    by Normie77 on 2011-10-15Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I had heard before hand that it was a mellower set and had time to wrap my head around it. This was my sixth time seeing them so being different and never hearing any song live in the set they had been playing was exciting. It was so tight and sounded great like always. Their musicianship is top notch too me.I will go and see them everytime they come and maybe even go elsewhere if I have too. Katatonia is also one of my favs i did enjoy seeing them for the first time.

    Phenomenal performance, terrible crowd

by Anonymous on 2011-10-12Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

Opeth at the Edmonton Events Centre was an incredible show. Katatonia opened with a fairly decent set, despite being slightly boring to watch. But the reason everyone was there was Opeth, and they delivered. Having watched/listened to all of their live albums I can safely say that this was the best they have ever sounded. The guitar tone was incredible, the bass and keyboards cut through the mix, and the drumming was top notch. Focusing mainly on the new record Heritage, Opeth played a growl-free and subdued set. While it wasn't as heavy as usual, the quality of musicianship and talent on display was simply outstanding. Great set, great sound, great little anecdotes from Mikael between songs. The only downside, and it was significant, was the crowd. I figured, having listened to Opeth's new record, that most fans would expect a less heavy and more atmospheric set. But once again, I find myself over estimating the intelligence of metal fans. It was clear that many people went to mosh, and were determined to do so regardless of what music Opeth was playing. There was a pushing circle during Porcelain Heart. Enough said. Not only was the crowd moshing unnecessarily, they would talk and yell out song names during the quiet interludes of Opeth's songs. These are the moments where you want to close your eyes and lose yourself in some of the most beautiful music ever created, but I found myself being taken out of the moment on more than one occasion. This is the reason I cannot give the concert 5 stars; the crowd was absolutely horrid. This is no fault of Opeth, and I would highly recommend seeing them on the Heritage Tour. They simply blew me away.

    Was expecting a little more....

by Smertler on 2011-10-12Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

Katatonia was AMAZING! Opeth is amazing but it was so slow. sooo slow. I knew it was going to be acoustic.. but you need to keep the energy going if you want people to stand and stare at you. We left before the last three songs because i was getting tired and bored. if it had been like a cafe type venue where you could sit and talk quietly and drink some iced mochas.. that would have been different. I would go and see them any day of the week.. but yeah it was slow.

The show was absolutely great! Would have loved to have heard more of the heavier songs, but I enjoyed the more laid back feel of the concert. Opeth Rocks!

    Opeth was wild

    by Unclemonkel on 2009-07-14Clutch Cargo's - Pontiac

Opeth is a great band, and they put on a great show. They played their music in a way that it was close enough to the recorded version to have the quality and drama we've come to know, but they deviated enough to make it interesting. They had a powerful stage presence, and Martin Axenrot's drumming works better live, I think, than it does in the studio. Mikael is a comedic genius, and kept the crowd laughing between songs, but the energy during the songs was mindblowing. At the intro of "The Lotus Eater", everyone in the place hummed along with Mikael, and when the riff kicked in, everybody was headbanging, and everybody had the horns up. Great show!
