Oregon Ducks Men's Basketball History

The University of Oregon men's basketball team was created in the 1902-03 season. High levels of success came for the program after Howard Hobson took over as head coach in 1935. Four years into Hobson's tenure, the Oregon Ducks became the first team to win the National Championship as part of the inaugural NCAA Basketball Championship Game in 1939. Due to their collective height advantage over every other team in the country, the Oregon championship team became known as "The Tall Firs."

Over the years, the Ducks have also enjoyed several more strong eras. In the early 1970s when Dick Harter became head coach, his Kamikaze Kids teams, known for their swarming style of play, twice won 20 games in a single season and also made three consecutive National Invitation Tournament appearances. In 1974, they upset John Wooden's No. 1 UCLA Bruins. Ernie Kent, who was one of the Kamikaze Kids, was hired as head coach in 1997 and helped guide the Ducks to the NCAA Tournament five times between 2000 and 2008, with Elite Eight runs in 2002 and 2007.

Since coach Dana Altman took over in 2010, Oregon has netted nine of the program’s 19 total NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight berth in 2016 and Final Four finish in 2017. During their tenure in the Pac-12 and its predecessor conferences, the Oregon men’s basketball team claimed eight total regular season conference championships and six conference tournament championships, capped by the tournament win during their final membership season in 2024. Additionally, the Ducks have competed in 13 editions of the National Invitation Tournament and won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament in 2011.
