Oregon Ducks Men's Basketball History

The University of Oregon men's basketball team was created in the 1902–03 season. High levels of success came for the program after Howard Hobson took over as head coach in 1935. Four years into Hobson's tenure, the Oregon Ducks became the first team to win the NCAA Basketball Championship. That championship team is known as "The Tall Firs" because of the collective height advantage they had over other teams in the country.

The Ducks have also enjoyed other strong eras. In the early 1970s when Dick Harter became head coach, his Kamikaze Kids teams, known for their swarming style of play, saw success. They twice won 20 games in a single season, and also made three consecutive National Invitation Tournament appearances. In 1974, they upset John Wooden's No. 1 UCLA Bruins. Ernie Kent, who was one of the Kamikaze Kids under Harter, was hired as head coach in 1997 and helped bring the program back to prominence. The Ducks made the NCAA Tournament in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2008 under Kent. The 2002 and 2007 teams made the Elite Eight.

Since 2010, Dana Altman has been the coach of Oregon. The team has seven NCAA Tournament appearances under him, including a Final Four berth in 2017. They've also won three Pac-12 Conference Tournaments under Altman.
