About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

  • A really funny show

by Ryan on 2024-01-09Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was very well put together and hilarious. No need to have seen all of the movies or read all of the books prior to seeing this play to follow along with the storyline of the show.

  • Fun (if minimalist in terms of “flash”) show for Potter fans

by Mojo, daughter and niece on 2024-01-08Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The show did not disappoint. I had taken my nieces the last time it was around and was excited to add my daughter this year. The two actresses/performers did a great job with little other than their talent and a few props. I would certainly recommend for any Harry Potter fan, especially those on the 6-14 age range. The venue is nice also.

  • Ok show

by Nabu on 2024-01-03Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Not what I expected. Ok show. At least we got good seats because the theater was less than half full.

  • Magical

Wasnt sure about this show at first. But it turned out to be a great show to watch with family. Enjoyed every moment. Nephews had a blast.

by Cat on 2024-01-01Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Took my son who absolutely loved the show. It's a great experience with lots of audience participation. Definitely a must for Potter fans.

  • It was ok

by Ottermom on 2024-01-01Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this show. It’s very a low budget production. I didn’t feel it was worth the ticket price. Was funny enough. My 9 yr old liked it. That’s all that mattered.

  • It’s for children

by Katherine on 2024-01-01Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

I didn’t realize the entire show is geared to children. I thought it would be a lot more professional and for adults. I wouldn’t have gone if I had known it was for children.

  • Hilarious!

by Bre on 2024-01-01Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

What a cute show! I wasn't sure what I expected prior to attending but a 2-person show was definitely not in my peripheral! Nonetheless, these 2 young ladies did an AMAZING job and I highly recommend this show for any Potter fan with a sense of humour! It was witty, punny, silly and clever!! So much fun!!!

  • Hilarious

by MBV on 2023-12-30Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The play was funny- so many jokes for serious Potter fans. My daughters (7 & 10) also loved it. My youngest just started book one and still found it funny, though she didn’t get many of the jokes. They enjoyed the interactive parts. It was 70 minutes, so a good length of time. Overall it was well-done.

  • Very expensive for amateur theater

by Riki on 2023-12-29Rating: 3 out of 5

I took my 12 year old daughter to see this play and she enjoyed it. However for the price, I had expected much more than what amounts to a simple amateur performance. Nothing wrong with entry level accessible theater, but charge accordingly.

  • AMAZING

    by Lisalynn1978 on 2023-12-27Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing. It was really great how they included the crowd in parts of the show. The girls we absolutely great together. We would do it again.

  • Young Harry Potter fans will enjoy this!

by SF on 2023-12-27Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

We saw the original production with our children when they were younger many years ago and left with fond memories. This version was amusing. Lottie and Jo put a new updated spin on the script that made the experience “cute” but this is a play clearly geared towards a younger audience and not necessarily one to return to year after year.

  • It's a pantomime

by pants on 2023-12-26Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Not great for adults- pretty low budget and in the English pantomime tradition. Kids liked the silliness more than I did.

  • Terrible production

by potheads on 2023-12-26Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

This production was not worth the $. It was not marketed properly...we are 28 year olds and the show was directly catered to children. There was no adult humour and the budget was very low. You don't even get a sense of Harry Potter and the references are stupid and unrelated.

  • Not as Magical as I had hoped!

by Al on 2023-12-26Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

The Potted Potter show was definitely a disappointment. My partner and I did not find it entertaining. The two of us are huge Harry Potter fans, and have both read all the books and seen the movies several times prior to attending the show. The puns, and jokes were understood as we had context but found none of comical. Money could have been spent towards more props, and more actors to make the show successful.

  • Very energetic, made me laugh, but not for kids

by Thank you! on 2023-12-26Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Thank you for your uplifting attitude and high spirits! I have enjoyed the high energy of the actors and their skill in presenting a multitude of characters in a funny and adorable manner. Still, I question whether I’m too serious for this type of comedy and whether this is great for kids.
