I loved Pretty Woman!
by Cat on 2022-11-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5I went to the Pretty Woman musical on November 19th and absolutely loved it. I think it's my favourite so far of all the musicals I've been to this fall. Such a wonderful Cinderella type, rags to riches type story that kept to the storyline of the movie for the most part. They even had the scene where Edward gives Vivien the necklace and startles her snapping the box. I read somewhere that in the movie, Richard Gere teased Julia Roberts snapping the box and she was actually startled so they kept the scene in there.
Great acting, singing and dancing. And the music was actually melodic and I could understand the words which I can't say for every musical. The plot moved along but wasn't overly frantic with its pacing like other musicals I've scene that bounce along as if everyone involved has had too much coffee. It did have a lot of rock music influence with Bryan Adams helping write it. There was even some opera thrown in and then they mixed that with rock which was very creative.
Such lovely themes in the music about going for your dreams. "Don't fight the dream, incite the dream!" Oh yeh, I'm there!
The couple who played Vivien and Edward were fantastic in their roles, with great chemistry.
Wonderful eighties vibe with the costumes, set and story. Makes me want to watch the movie again and see the musical again. Definitely added to my favourites list.
