PRIMUS IN CONCERT:
Funk metal legends Primus have been letting their freak flag fly for more than three decades, and 2015 promises to be just as wild as they gear up for a tour in support of their eighth studio album Primus & The Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble. Both the album and tour feature frontman Les Claypool playing alongside the classic Primus lineup, and the highly anticipated reunion has fans chomping at the bit to see them perform favorites like “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” in concert. From Claypool’s signature twangy vocals and finger-tapped basslines to the band’s high-energy antics on stage, Primus always treats ticket buyers to an eccentric, funk-fueled live show that’s as weird as it is wonderful.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Primus formed in Northern California in 1984 and quickly built a regional following with their quirky, humorous funk-metal hybrid. After releasing several demos and a live album titled Suck on This, Primus made their proper studio debut in 1990 with the album Frizzle Fry. The record cracked the Top 40 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, leading to a tour with alt metal giants Jane’s Addiction and a deal with Interscope records. The following year the label issued the band’s sophomore album Sailing the Seas of Cheese, a cult classic that eventually reached Platinum sales thanks to witty fan favorites like “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and “Tommy the Cat”. By the mid-‘90s Primus had broken through to the mainstream – their 1993 album Pork Soda peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, and later that year they headlined Lollapalooza. Their crossover success continued in 1996 when they were asked to create the theme song for beloved adult animated sitcom South Park. Since then the band has weathered several hiatuses, always returning with more vigor than ever. In 2014 they released their eighth album Primus & The Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble, a critically acclaimed psych rock romp that they’ll support on tour with the classic Primus lineup.
Never been to the Grey Eagle, great staff and the sound was awesome!!
A trippy audiovisual experience, like nothing I’d ever seen before. The music is the perfect vessel to focus on the visuals. It was fantastic
What an amazing concert. Top tier talent covering top tier talent. Threw in some originals too.
Primus always puts on a great show. The Rush cover album was played perfectly. Les claypool absolutely shreds that bass. Turned my wife into a fan.
'Primus' performed at The Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on a sunny Saturday evening June 4, 2022. Primus (and Rush) fans alike, were entertained by 'Working Men' on stage. Their first set opened up with Primus songs current and past. A brief intermission and 'The Burton Cummings' theatre went back to 1977 when 'A Farewell To Kings' inspired us preteens in Winnipeg's North End. The stage setup was clean. Primus put alot, and alot of effort not only by a great performance; they use the same guitar's and equipment setup to get as close to a 1977 performance in June of 2022. Primus made an incredible effort to perfect every note and beat as it if Rush was on stage. Primus is truly a hard working band on the road giving the 'Working Man' status. Primus, thank you so much for putting Winnipeg on the schedule as one of the last minute stops on your Canadian your Canadian tour. Best of luck and safe travels on your remaining shows. Regards, Francisco B. Oliveira
The venue was intimate, beautiful and the sound was fantastic. Primus, as always, was perfect.
Primus killed it! Rush tribute was epic! Claypool and the boys were on point and the crowd was great. Fantastic show!
Excellent opening band, Primus nailed every song! Great sound on the main level, good mixes. If you had been thinking of going and didn’t you missed a GREAT event!
Terrific musicianship, amazimg what sound 3 players can create. Can definitely see the Rush influence that way! Great recreation of Farewell to Kings. And amazing bass sounds throughout. And definetely got our money's worth! Hope they come back!
Wow! Best Concert Ever! Do you ever get your money's worth for this show. Entertained for hours with the amazing music of Primus. Les Claypool is a musical genius. Highly recommend seeing this set in person! Thank you! The sound at the Burt is great.
Primus was my first real show since COVID and it didn’t disappoint. Nearly 3 hours of music in 3 sets including an entire RUSH album in the middle. Absolutely great energy. Seats in the venue were build for gnomes and the sound it wasn’t perfect but Les Claypool made up for it with the great set.
The venue was great. Black Mountain was good, but the sound quality was very bad. It was loud and difficult to hear the lead guitar and vocals. Primus had their sound right, and put on a very good show.
Show started with a great set of Primus songs. Middle was the Rush tribute then they finished with more Primus (with an encore). I love Primus and am not so big on Rush, but I still loved the show. Rush set was so involved it was impressive to watch. Tim’s setup was enormous. I’ve found some previous Primus tours to be jam odysseys which was fun but they blasted out lots of old hits in tight form with some jammy teasers. Go see this tour!
The venue and staff were by far the best ever. Watched them even give a bucket to a guy throwing up hahah And what more do I need to say other than this is Primus. If you know you know. AND the okayed farewell to kings in its entirety. EPIC SHOW !
Primus played absolutely phenomenally, everyone was on point on their instrument, and hearing both Primus and Rush at the same show was a blast. The one downside was that the etiquette was to sit during the show, which kind of sucks considering Primus is something you’d like to stand for and jam out to.
Big fan of primus and they played some cool versions of rushes album. The visuals were really cool and the view was great. My only problem was with the sound... i dont know if it was because of where i was up in the gallery but it was way too quiet and muddy. The speaker up there didnt appear to be on or the sound guy didnt know what he was doing in my opinion. That was my first time at massey hall so maybe thats just how it is there
The setlist was just great, a lot of older songs that you don't expect to hear live no more!
The primus show was outstanding , we loved every second of it , even the opening group black mountain, primus is one of them groups you have to see live, they are something to see and overall to hear , thank you primus for the tribute to rush it sent shiver’s through my body, the audio sound was so good thank you.
Massey hall sounds amazing. Can see from everwhere
Un excellent musicien en plein contrôle!! Hallucinant!!
