    Virtuoso!

by oldflattop on 2013-05-13RIO Theatre on BROADWAY - Vancouver

Richard's music is rich, powerful, complex and moving. Not only is he a stellar musician, songwriter and craftsman but he's joined by a drummer extraordinaire and fabulous bassman who provide a superb, powerhouse rhythm section. I must say it's impossible to sit still while the band is playing yet when Richard picks up his acoustic the crowd is mesmerized and very quiet. I've seen Richard live twice. The first time in an auditorium, which I prefer as you can rock on, and this time in a theatre setting which was great, but as I mentioned, it's hard to sit still with such great music. Thank you Richard and band! Oh yes, the sound person did a great job filling the hall perfectly with crystal clear power. Richard provides one of the best live shows possible; he plays superbly and his between song humour is brilliant!

    Richard Thompson @Montalvo

    by newby21 on 2012-12-10Montalvo - Saratoga

Definite recommend if my friend already knew of Thompson. Many of his ballads are slow and/or depressing. He makes fun of it. He does banter with the crowd, which is entertaining. It was an audience request show, requests dropped in a bucket and he'd pick them out at random. I personally would like him to limit the requests to HIS songs, rather than anything someone just requested. i.e. the request for Bohemian Rhapsody. On an acoutic guitar?.... He played with the song and the audience helped him play. The venue get only 2 stars because it was so cold in there.

    Richard Thompson does it again.

by Ottawawingnut on 2011-09-12Bronson Centre - Ottawa

The lucky 7th time I've seem Mr. T live & he has never failed to impress - in a big way. He is the epitome of musical integrity & certainly the finest guitarist I've ever seen in a rock/pop/folk setting. Phenomenal picking, impeccable songs - what separates Thompson from other guitarists is his songwriting. As is usual in his shows, he played songs from throughout his immense catalogue. At this show I was once again blown away with his technical viruosity but also by the rich tones he pulls from an acoustic guitar. More force than the average band!

    Richard Thompson is incredible!

by Muskieman on 2011-09-09Bronson Centre - Ottawa

Powerful vocals, and amazing, powerful acoustic guitar. Richard Thompson is an incredible solo performer, and this show was a real treat. I am already looking forward to the next time he comes to town. Hopefully it will be soon.

    Thompson Crowd was Meagre

by NaiSiobdag on 2011-09-09Bronson Centre - Ottawa

While Richard Thompson's performance had the usual technical brilliance, it suffered from the poor attendance. He played for less than 90 minutes Thompson was noticeably less enthusiastic and humourous than usual, which I attribute to the fact that the Bronson Centre, which holds 800+, had fewer than 500. . Poor promotion, high ticket prices and a lack of recent Thompson material on the radio all contributed to this. Having said all that, Richard ripped through a wide range of memorable material, displaying a mind-boggling finger picking technique, along with his maturing voice. His voice has become richer in timbre and much more powerful in later years. Despite my complaints, I would go again in a heartbeat.

    Amazing, a powerhouse

by soulmoxie on 2011-09-08Bronson Centre - Ottawa, Canada

Thompson is still incredible, what energy the man must have to run through all those changes in all those songs, virtually without a break (there was no intermission, show lasted about 90 minutes). Sings with true passion, plays of course with dazzling virtuosity, everything you have heard about him is true, and then some. He makes an "acoustic" guitar sound like a rock band: for one thing, he gets incredible bass registers out of that thing. Show nicely paced between screamers (yes, it does get to that point: "Crawl Back") and soft & gentle (the closing Woods of Darney -- nothing could be more wistful). All in all, a dazzling, inspiring evening: I left at the end a little unsteady on my feet.

    The best just gets better

Generous, exhilarating double set by best electric guitar player anywhere. RT with a band blows any other band away. Pity about the crappy sound from row 5.

    Richard Thompson @Montalvo

    by newby21 on 2009-12-07Montalvo - Saratoga

I'm a new fan to the Richard Thompson (only 3 or 4 years.) Sure sorry I took so long to catch up. He is playful with the audience, most of whom seem to know most of the lyrics to what he sings. A few of the songs he really invites audience sing along, and some we sat in blissful silence to listen.
