i was there as much to see Eliza Gilkyson as much as I was there to see Richard Thompson. She was terrific, her vocals impeccable and witty and engaged. Sound was terrific. Would have been nice if she could have done an encore, but I get that the warm-up doesn't want to push their performance time into the featured performer's slot. However, the delay between the end of her set and the start of Thompson's was so ridiculously long that she could easily have done 2 encores and there still would have been time to go for a walk around the block, buy a coffee, and stand in line at the washroom.
Thompson when he did come on was everything you expect - powerful vocals, thoughtful songwriting, extraordinary musicianship, engaged, funny, but he was hampered by sound engineer who couldn't figure out that there was a slight echo (even Thompson himself stopped and remarked on it) and that the volume Thompson was playing at combined with the echo muddied the delivery such that you could barely make out the words of the songs. Some artists like to play loud and don't seem to be too concerned when lyrics are lost in the cacophony, but I have to believe Thompson thinks enough of his songwriting that he isn't one of them and that he would prefer people to hear what he's singing rather than just to know that he is singing. Unfortunately, that was pretty much the way the evening went unless he was playing a slow ballad. So I left thinking I'd like to see him again, but hopefully different venue and with different sound engineer so I could actually hear what he was singing. I'm giving this a #4 only because Gilkyson was flawless and Thompson gave it everything he had so I don't want this to reflect on them, but the overall feeling on leaving was more like a #3 because I felt it could have been so much more and so was disappointed.
