Had the pleasure of seeing the first performance of "Rock of Ages" at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto. It is so refreshing to see a new professional theatre company in Canada and a full cast of talented Canadian performers.
It was wonderfully staged by JP Gedeon on a visually stunning multi-level unit set. A brilliant mix of nostalgia, comedy, creative choreography, and rock-concert with the band everywhere.
Stand outs include (but are not limited to... there were so many...):
Dave Comeu as Lonny who sets the tone for the show right away as EXTRAordinary narrator with tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek.
Trevor Coll as Drew, all around, and there should be some kind of award for holding that one note for 30-seconds, with an ending riff.
The Costuming, especially on Justice, (played by Louise Camilleri who also had an amazing voice) and the creation of angel wings just for one bit.
(Actually, there are so many amazing voices here! The backstage harmonies that underscored some tender moments on-stage were *chef's kiss*.)
Sherrie, played by AJ Bridel, had a well-thought-out character arc from mid-western country girl to jaded strip girl. She can Rock AND sound Country all at once, and made that tremendous range look easy.
Choreography was on fire and everywhere. EVERYONE danced.
The classic MTV tribute.
The make-up and hair - especially that nice nod to Twisted Sister when Regina starts to protest.
The llama (you have to see it... no description will do it justice.)
Every scene with Franz and Regina.
The "wrecking ball".
Stacee Jaxx's blatant sass, and conveyor-belt moment.
The tech, the laser show, the LA skyline....
"Can't Fight This Feeling" had me laughing so hard from start to finish, and the finale of "Don't Stop Believing" that had the audience on their feet dancing and singing along.
If you love 80's music - treat yourself to a wonderful night at the Elgin Theatre before the show leaves for its US Tour at the end of May.
