    Rock the Kootenays

    by Dana on 2023-08-17

Hello, we enjoyed Rock the Kootenays very much. The only thing that we did not really enjoy is the fact that we didn't know a lot of the bands didn't have their lead singers. They were changed out and we were unaware of that which was a little unnerving. Some other things that were a little annoying was the fact that the bands didn't play their most popular songs that we would have known and they were trying to promote their new material, which was not really why we were there. We were there to hear the old tunes that we knew and heard before. So in the future if this could be reiterated to our bands, that would be great. Otherwise, it was a fantastic weekend and we're looking forward to joining with the next one! Thanks again for the experience, it was great!

    Total satisfaction

    by Eat Cake on 2023-08-17

Bands were amazing, awesome venue. If I had to complain it would be that the food was a bit expensive. Maybe add more accessibility to the merch tents. Long lines and in direct sun people were over heating. We had an excellent time and all the sponsor tents were exceptional. Great job…let’s keep this going as it brings money and people to our city. Thanks again

    by OldieGoldie on 2023-08-17

Music was awesome, people were well behaved, lotsa pricey food , Very Well Organized,,,, Beer choice was poor. Should of had different brands and more reasonable $$$ than $9.00/ea Other than that, Please make this an Annual Event !! Rock On !!!

    So much good music!

    by Cattledogkate on 2023-08-16

In my review I give only 4 stars as, on the final hottest day, they ran out of drinking water. The misting stations kept people from passing out, they were so good. Other than that it was really great. So much fun with my 2 Sisters and of course, great music! Missed the 1st day, but the 2nd was fantastic. All the bands were really good, but Tom C and especially Prism were the best. Sunday lineup wasn't as good plus ridiculously hot equals early out. Could hear the music back at the Air B and B very well. I came from Taber AB and Sisters from Kalispell. The City deer and trees around the venue made for a beautiful view. I will attend again, even if everyone was old, like me. Thanks Cranbrook!

    Fantastic Time!

    by Vernon-Fans on 2023-08-16

We had a fantastic time, attended all 3 days. Been to the Kelowna "Rock the Lake"(this was much better). Parking was a big plus, we were able to walk to our hotel from the event too (in Kelowna, only the expensive hotels are near the event). The bands at RTK were all from the same era which made it easy for us to choose a 3 day pass in Cranbrook. The Kelowna one mixes the older groups we know with newer groups that we don't know so we won't attend that one anymore.

    Big Disappointed

    by Boomer on 2023-08-16

First of all, it was in a parking lot! If I would have known this I would not have spent all that money for a weekend. Food prices were outrageous as well, I get venders need to make money but you already have a captive audience, why gouge? I will not go back to an event there.

    Good job!

    by Lucylu on 2023-08-16

Wow! What a spectacular production. The musical lineup was superb and brought back many memories of my youth. I was amazed at how well the venue was organized and allowed people to easily get around and access every part of the concert grounds. Bravo to the people who put this together. Looking forward to attending next year!

    A Good Start But…

    by TLP on 2023-08-16

Overall, it was great to have the festival. The lineup was good but in future, if the lead singer of a band is alive, but won’t be performing; advertise that —and don’t give them the top billing. Location was nice and central and smart to have some shuttles, but their destinations were very limited. Providing water stations and misters was a very good idea. Changes that would be good going forward? Since this is Rock the KOOTENAYS; sell Kootenay beer!! And have more servers/beer tents. Needs more food vendors and people should be able to bring fruits and veggies as not everyone wants/can eat fast food and it wasn’t really available. Also, let local restaurants know there will be hungry people after the concert so they should keep their kitchens open downtown—at least on Friday and Saturday night.

The good and some not quite so.

    by Jamie FS on 2023-08-16

Music was awesome. Very disappointing that you were not allowed to bring in your own food, such as fruit. Vendor food was limited and very poor vegetarian selection. Limited variety for drinks ( specially after the city of Cranbrook pulled the hard liquor license - you really couldn't work that out?) and no ice - so drink it fast or drink it warm? Water stations provided luke warm water, not allowed to bring our own even in sealed bottles and no coolers or ice allowed. How many thousand people and about 8 feet of misting area in 30 plus heat on pavement....? Staff and security were great. Hopefully a few lessons learned and Rock the Kootenays will continue in the future.

    Great Time

    by Dar. on 2023-08-16

Loved the entertainment. Such a great lineup. Shame April Wine had technical difficulties; put bit of a damper on things. New Myles Goodwin sounds good though. Appreciate that last show started at 8:30pm and not later. Home at decent time. I’m old so earlier always better. Keep that schedule. Only complaint is not being able to bring our own sealed bottled water in which is nice and cold and refreshing. Aware gate people have to check bottles so more time consuming for everyone but worth the wait. Appreciate water provided but it was very warm and not not very refreshing. This is the only thing I would change with future events. Food and vendors were excellent. Chair setup was fine. For all the people there, didn’t seem to be an ounce of trouble, that I aware of anyway. No behaviour problems in crowd. Thank you.

    A very good time

    by Rene on 2023-08-16

Friday wasn't very organized, thrilled everything was so much better on Saturday and Sunday. The bands were good or great except for Honetmoon Suite. The lead singer took way too many breaks leaving the audience listening to instrumentation, boring, many folks in the crowd agreed. We will never attend a concert that they a key band or headliner. Streetheart and Kim Mitchel absolutely rocked it.

    Kootenay Rocks

by Girl who likes to ROCK on 2023-08-16

We so enjoyed this Musicfest as it had all the bands from our era. Loved the timing of the start of each day. The layout of the grounds was great, especially the changes that were made for day two. It was great to see so many security guards on the grounds as well. We did not experience and troublesome activity which was nice. The bands were great!! Tom Cochrane was unbelievable!!! He read the energy of the crowd and played to it. Our only disappointment of the whole event was April Wine. The tuning of three guitars in the beginning of the set, killed all the energy!! He should have just gone onto another song!! People started leaving because it. That was too bad because it would have been nice to finish it off with a bang! All in all it was a great event!! To the organizers, you did a great job!!’

Awesome Event - April Win a dis’s appointment.

    by Kootenaygirl85 on 2023-08-16

I thought the event was great overall! The food was excellent, and the staff was super helpful. Spirits were not one of the alcohol items provided which was a bit disappointing. On the Sunday, it was incredibly hot and I wished they would have been more places to stand in the shade as people were crowding into little tiny shade spots for relief. Tom Cochrane was definitely the highlight of the weekend. I thought all of the bands were awesome and gave their all except for April Wine. They arrived late as their crew raced frantically to set up the stage for them. Brian Greenway had a hissy fit on stage, and proceeded to yell at one of the stage hands, then proceeded to leave the stage. Marc Parent was absolutely amazing with his guitar skills and played a 15 minute jam while waiting for Brian. Brian came back on stage, but really didn’t give anything to the performance and made one of the stage hands basically stay on stage fussing over him the whole concert. Having said that, Marc Parent brought so much to the stage and it was very impressive to watch him, and I felt bad for him that he had to put up with such a display. I thought Cranbrook did an excellent job of facilitating this event, and I would definitely be back next year.

    Needs better venue

    by Halsbee on 2023-08-16

With so many beautiful and secluded areas around Cranbrook that could support this weekend concert, it was a shame it was held in the inner city. Now onto the music, i only was at the Sunday concert consisting of 4 bands. Teaze/Street Heart/Honeymoon Suite/April Wine. The headliner being April Wine.. all the other 3 bands were awesome but April Wine fell flat on there faces..first iff they were late to the stage, then equipment issues and the lead singer continually leaving the stage complaining of nose bleeds!!(maybe lay off the nose candy) I think a total of 4 songs were played. Bad, bad, bad..all in all it was a great time but could have been better at a more rural venue!!

    Epic bands

    by TANTAN on 2023-08-16

Overall great experience although for the demographic the beer and cooler choices were not well thought out. For this age group you need Bud Light and Mike's hard anything. The water was hot. You need to let people bring in water. Or at least have ice available all the time. I talked to many people that ate before they came as the prices in the food trucks were astronomical. I understand they need to jack prices up because the Festival takes a percentage of their profits. Why serve hard liquor only one night?

    by Kootenay on 2023-08-16

Not bad for a first time in cranbrook Seemed like lots of issues to work out, - designate a BEER GARDENS . Not impressed with alcohol being available with children, people vomited , had to be escorted out , -smoking ,, it was hot pavement but smokers had to leave the venue and smoke with no place for butts - marijuana smokers a low dose crowd lol had no place to legally smoke but the parking lot - garbage cans were nowhere to be found on first day People putting on brackets litred, looked bad on the venue - mister water 1 station and 1 excited for all those people Overall music was good , sound could’ve be better due to stage position and video screens so we all can see the shows Would I go again NO hopefully Grandforks gets up and going , Concert on pavement is way to hot !

    Meh...

    by KRock66 on 2023-08-16

Cranbrook needs to up their game if they want to continue hosting this event. Some really basic things need to improve. They ran out of water on 30 degree days, the line up for alcohol was 45 minutes long. Provide some buckets or ashtrays for the huge area outside the gate that was littered with butts. Bands were 50-50, some really sucked (April Wine played mostly instrumental), but some were fantastic (Tom Cochrane played all his hits).

    Needs a few tweaks

    by Concertgoer on 2023-08-16

Picking up tickets took a really long time on the first night. I don't know why they didn't provide a different colored wrist band for each night, and a separate colour for the 3-night pass instead of physical tickets. The liquor line up was ridiculously long. They needed more volunteers. By the second night they learned their lesson, so weren't providing poured drinks. The drinks weren't very good. The bands were good, except April Wine, which was supposed to be a headliner. Instead of playing their popular songs, they did lengthy solos. People were leaving early, and we did too after an hour of hoping it would get better. Overall, it was a great weekend, beautiful weather and great location. Great line up of musicians, and all CANADIAN. They just need to improve a few logistical issues.
