Crappy food, terrible service and weak entertainment lineup

by No more rock the river on 2023-08-23

This will be the last year for us to attend this event unless someone else takes over the food, beverage and service portions of this event. Rock 102 should really be embarrassed by the level of the bands performing this year (repeats and rehashing year after year only works for so long). Until Sasktel Centre/Scott Ford and the Bessborough take responsibility for the terrible food and fix the poor bar service system then this event will suffer a slow death. No one I talked to was happy with any of the service for food and beverages, why do you think that so many make a point of leaving the gardens to eat elsewhere forcing them to miss some of the entertainment.

    Good music

    by MC on 2023-08-23

As always it was a great weekend. Music was fabulous except for Flock of seagulls. Hoping for Aldo Nova next year ! Missing the lemonade and the popcorn this year… where did they go ? Plus less bathrooms ?

    Not Impressed

    by Rock Mamma on 2023-08-23

I have gone every year since it began and this by far has been the worst. Fri was a gong show. Not enough ticket or bar venues. Line ups were 40-50 minutes in each. People were missing the entertainment. There was only 1 side of bathrooms, that was terrrible!! Main headliners were all on Fri, which were amazing!! Tom Cochrane was fantastic. Sunday was horrible, thank God Gowan's voice was still good. He was OK. We ended up on the patio for Sunday, which was another disappointment. Overall not impressed this year, too many people. Was better the first few years. Even due to all that was wrong, I will still be back. It is something that a group of us do every year. Was just disappointed. The beer/drinks are still terrible, thank God there was Bud Light but ran out by Sunday. Drink tickets could be sold when people are lined up??

Our favourite concert weekend since 2014

by Tara & Jeremy on 2023-08-23

Rock the River is awesome! Great bands in a wonderful setting with great friends. Every year we see new bands, meet new people, meet up with friends from previous years, and enjoy ourselves. Highly recommended!

    RR 2023

    by Not Happy on 2023-08-23

Music was great. Ticket sales for drink/ food tickets was unacceptable Friday night. Missed 2/3 of first band being in lineup. Then had to get in the actual lineup to get drink or food which was also unacceptable. Could have individuals selling drink tickets to people in the lineup on the street precious to doors being opened or get more ticket booths and drink booths set up. Also not convenient to use ports potties if you were set up on opposite side. Prices are getting out of control for food and drink. $12 for a shitty hamburger- cmon!

    Great weekend

    by Schultz on 2023-08-23

The music was fantastic! However, the washrooms only being on the one side, and the huge line ups for liquor tickets, then liquor was a bit off putting. Also not being able to get a wristband to leave the venue until most of the concert goers were inside proved to be problematic.

    Overall a great event.

    by KB on 2023-08-23

The food at the venue was very disappointing... $12 hot dog and $18 nachos... If you don't offer good food then we need a longer break so that we can go elsewhere to eat in between acts. The booze was great overall but a GW Radler option would be great. The booze tents were efficient. The entertainment was good overall. Streetheart (fabulous!!), Tom Cochrane (fabulous!), Crash Test Dummies, April Wine, Carole Pope, Men Without Hats and Gowan were all great. A few new acts would be nice but I would see Streetheart again in a heart beat. Streetheart should not be the first act ever, they should be the final act of the night with the longer play time. However, the lighting during the Gowan concert was AWEFUL. The crowd was constantly being flashed on and off by the huge, very bright lights that shone right in our eyes for the whole show! I couldn't watch the stage which really takes away from a live show. I ended the night with a headache. I was NOT the only one who found it horrible. The crowd tried to let them know but they could not hear it. I even asked the lighting guy to stop but it was no better.

    Music Great. Facility Disappointing

    by BeenThereFromDay1 on 2023-08-23

The bands were great and met all expectations. Well done music promoter. The price of beer is now ridiculous. The Bessborough Hotel service is unacceptable and much too over crowded. Time to move the event to a new location like the Jazz Festival did.

    Room for improvement!

    by Jazzabel on 2023-08-23

Standing in line for an hour to get drink tickets is unacceptable! After all these years , you’d think the organizers would have the kinks worked out! 😖 The band, Flock of Seagulls had no business taking the stage; their performance was horrendous! They sounded like a group of 14 year olds playing in their dad’s garage. One expects more from professional musicians; instead, we were subjected to off key vocals, and a hack bass player. They even blew their one and only hit song! Embarrassingly bad! Will never attend another event where they’re on the ticket. Come on, Rock the River, you can do better! Get your poop in a group!

    Way too crowded

    by Beachtech on 2023-08-23

We felt it was much more crowded than any other Rock the River, and we’ve been to them all. There were also many more lawn chairs set up where you used to be able to stand. A lot of the time the chairs were empty. The music started out way too loud and stayed there. The experience has been downgraded to the point that we won’t be attending anymore.

The Bands were great! Lots of enthusiasm

    by Jan on 2023-08-23

Not having 3 day passes mailed( paper or electronic) was a drag...had to stand in line to pick up then go to back of entrance line. Kiosk for pick up only opened 1 hour prior so long line! Poor food and beverage selection on site. No coffee??? Why???

    Great Time!!!!

Excellent performance by all groups. $12 for a burger is overpriced for what I received

    Always a Good Time

by Darci from Red Deer AB on 2023-08-23

Best venue for an outdoor concert. This year's line up was so much better than the 2022 line up. I wish Chilliwack could belt em out like they used to, but totally understand the high notes are hard to hit as the voice gets older. For me, Tom Cochrane and Gowan were amazing, Crash Test Dummies were super good; particularly the crazy guys on keyboards/keytar lol, Carol Pope impressed the hell outta me (respect man), and Men Without Hats were surprisingly very entertaining. Overall another great weekend. Kinda feel like the line up needs a few 90's bands in future years. Running out of 80's bands that can still perform well. My suggestions are Wide Mouth Mason, The Odds, Sheepdogs, Headstones, Big Wreck, Big Sugar. Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback.

    What happened this year!!!

    by MLL on 2023-08-22

Very disappointed this year from beginning to end. Firstly, staying at the BESS was always a benefit that you could access the grounds to enter. First year they changed it and we had to wait in line. Secondly the line ups for tickets and drinks on the Friday night was the worst we had ever seen. Missed the entire first band because of it. And the cost!!! $9.00 a drink! What a terrible rip off. Low end wine, vodka etc. Porta Potties were all on one side only...why???? Thank God the music was great. Will think twice about attending again.
