RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Rodriguez is amazing! His voice, guitar playing, and song writing are superb. So much respect for this artist."

"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."

"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."

    Rodriguez

by lorra on 2016-09-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

He is an incredible man and has a great voice, but we had wished he had song more of his own songs for the concert instead of cover songs. We didn't enjoy the concert as much with all the cover songs that didn't seem right for him

    Rodriguez delivered

Rodriguez made the auditorium feel like a intimate little bar. His personality was exactly as I hoped he would be.

    So worth the wait

by Editormac on 2016-09-04Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

After all these years. To finally see Rodriguez play live. I would have liked to have seen a backing band with him, however his acoustic set evoked memories of playing the "Cold Fact" songs on my old FG-160. As his eyesight fades, the memories remain forever. So many thanks for coming to the Jube. It was wonderful.

    Rodriquez World Class

by Motific on 2016-09-04Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

It was sheer pleasure to see and hear Sixto Rodriquez on Thursday night. His voice defied his 74 years, it was so soft and beautiful. I will never forget his messages throughout his music, and even the cover tunes that were better done by him than the original artists. His "Power to the people" comments at the end of the show, ring as powerful now as when he started his career.

Rodriguez...I'm still mesmerized by his talent!

by Anonymous on 2016-09-04Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

It is very hard to describe a man like Rodriguez. He is exceptionally humble and extremely generous with his talent! I have never heard anyone stand behind just their guitar and pull off Elton John, The Doors, My Fair Lady and the Rolling Stones in addition to his own original records. I went in knowing little and left a huge fan!

    Rodriguez Solid 74

by katzenjammer on 2016-09-03Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Rodriguez in one of Vancouver's two acoustically tuned venues was an opportunity I couldn't let pass me by. Although I knew Rodriguez had not put out any new material or even any re-engineered material, I wanted to hear him sing his own material live. I fought the impulse to be disappointed, but there was still an underlying sense of disappointment. His time on stage was short; his audience presence was connected; his insistence on a well-tuned guitar was appreciated; he offered most of his signature songs. And then, it was time to leave the stage. All things considered, this was worth the price of admission and the effort to get there. I wish Rodriguez would have been presented in a smaller, more intimate venue. The Orpheum is a warm venue, but still too large for Rodriguez. It takes courage to take to the stage and continue to face a large audience. There's still a song in his heart.

Rodriguez and friends - super show.

by Bookfiend on 2016-09-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Beginning with the sensational opener Arum Rae (standing ovation) and then to Sugarman himself, this was a fabulous evening. So glad to see him as his health apparently isn't the best - but he is so dedicated to performing. Absolutely GREAT.

by AustinCarl on 2016-09-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Man o man... Played only 3 of his original song!!! I think he was on stage 45 minutes. I didn't even stay for the encore. At least get a band backing you up. I will just have to enjoy his recorded music.

    Rodriquez Calgary show

by MfromCalgaryAb on 2016-09-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Was a bit disappointed with the overall show, I wish Rodriquez has a band with him after listening to his songs on line I was expecting more from the show. Should of been a bit louder..had trouble hearing him when he was talking. Did not know that he seems to have lost his eye sight and had to be escorted on and off the stage by his handlers. He was only on stage for 1 hour

    A WONDERFUL EVENING!

by Anonymous on 2014-05-16Masonic Temple - Detroit

For anyone that knows the story of Rodriguez they will understand that this was a once in a lifetime concert to see. He is 71 years old now and his voice was fantastic. I couldn't say the same for a lot of other performers of that age that I have seen over the years. A very humble man. He kept his comments to a minimum, but they were heartfelt. Songs and back up musicians were excellent. We could have sat all night and listened to him. Thank you Sixto.

by khazle on 2013-10-15Radio City Music Hall - New York

I must say I was a bit alarmed when Rodriquez was walked on the stage, yet when he started singing all was forgotten. His playlist was excellent and I would go and see him again. Rock On Rodriquez!

    Rodriguez Concert

by PAJC on 2013-05-20Masonic Temple - Detroit

Great to see Rodriguez and loved it when he performed his own songs. Didn't like most of his cover song performances, though. He should stick to his own. Given the demographic (kids of the sixties), think the show should start earlier. Didn't get to hear him til after 10 p.m. Would like to hear him talk more about his music, songwriting and what he's doing now. Enjoyed his understated humor. ('Just want to be treated like an ordinary legend')

    Rodriguez amazing!!!!

by Sashapaws on 2012-10-27Virgin Mobile Mod Club - Toronto

After watching the documentary about this humble man from Detroit I just had to see the live show. A talented musician, and entertaining to say the least. If given the opportunity to see him again I would definatly be there.
