RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:
Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Rodriguez is amazing! His voice, guitar playing, and song writing are superb. So much respect for this artist."
"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."
"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."

Rodriguez did not disappoint, his voice is like velvet...we loved the performance. What an awesome and memorable night of music...
I truly enjoyed the show. Rodriguez is an amazing musician. I feel blessed that I was able to see him perform live. He is poetic, smart but above all truly humbled by his fame. The acoustics in Massey Hall are great. My only wish was that he could have played longer and stuck to performing his own music (hence 4 stars and not 5)
I love the 'Searching For Sugarman' documentary and I love a lot of the tracks off of Rodriguez' first two albums. I wasn't overly thrilled with the concert. I wish he had a back-up band with him because a couple of the songs could have used a little more oomph. His voice sounded really good when he was doing his own material........not so great when he was doing covers. He did way too many covers and the ones he chose were questionable (Our Song - Elton John....really weak, Satisfaction - Stones, Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins, Somebody To Love - Jefferson Airplane, Light My Fire - The Doors, etc.). He was on stage for just over an hour.
So beautiful, great singer, guitar playing seemed effortless. If he is ever here again I'm going!
In 1970 and 71 Rodriguez released two really great albums. Then 40 years passed by, followed by an fairy tale-like rags to riches story a lady Cinderella. But, like I said, it was 40 years. And they were not easy years and they took a toll. Maybe, with a band backing him, it would have been a really great show. They would've been able to cover up a lot of the, frankly, poor musicianship. But it was just him, alone on the stool, with a guitar, trying to wrap himself in the glory that everybody wanted so desperately to put on him. Everything he does professionally is micromanaged by his daughter, Regan, who acts in the dual role of a cocoon and military-like taskmaster. Want an autograph? Want to shake his hand and say thanks for all the great music? Forget about it. It's kind of a shame that Rodriguez wasn't able to realize his fame back when he should've received it and then build upon it. Because what could've been is not what it is. What is, I am sorry to report, is rather sad. Aside from a few of his own songs, he played barely decent covers of Satisfaction, Your Song, Chain Gang, Fever, Lught My Fire and a few others. But what's even worse is that almost everybody there fell under the spell of the Rodriguez that the media has created. If you really want to hear Rodriguez and experience what he was all about, stay home and listen to the record.
A great show, one of the best I have seen at Massey Hall. As usual great acoustics, his narrative with the audience was amusing and his playlist and execution great. Having said that would it have been asking too much to actually have decent lighting for the show?
We were honoured to have witnessed this man perform in a first class venue like Massey Hall. While Rodrigues is losing his sight, he still was able to entertain and remind us why he was "bigger than Elvis" in Australia. Thank you for bringing this special man to Toronto.
Excellent performance and a wonderful evening watching a man who should be an inspiration to us all. It's neever to late to live your dream. Rodriguez's voice is a smooth as his recordings from long ago - and his guitar playing is bang on. So glad we made the trip to see this "legend". What a humble human being, just loving doing what he does!
We have not stopped singing his songs since we went to the concert. Fabulous evening!
Appreciated a concert with a man and his guitar and not the usual over produced "show". Warm up act was excellent
This show was fabulous. Just like the video I was in shock. To actually see him perform.
Very disappointed in Rodriguez. While his voice is still very good for a 75 year old, he has lost his "coolness" which was one of his greatest assets. I'm still very happy that I attended and got to see this icon in the music business.
Still a great voice; still a crowd charmer; still singing the truth; still entertaining and wonderful. Very much enjoyed Rodriguez's performance in Winnipeg
Amazing concert by an amazing man! Glad I was one of the lucky ones to see him.
Rodriguez is in very rough shape for 72 years old. The songs from his albums weren't too bad but the other covers he did were very rough. His vocals and guitar playing were at a lower level than you would hear from the majority of amateur roadies.
What an amazing man. What an amazing performance, but then again, I did not expect anything less from a man the world ignored for too many years. I am proud to be a South African and to have welcomed him to Cape Town in 1998. He was amazing then and he is just as amazing 18 years later. A humble, gentle, talented man who deserves all the accolades he is receiving now, just a shame he had to wait that long to get them. Love you Mr. Rodriguez, hats off to you.
It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop...Rodriguez had the audience captivated at the sold out show. The set was as unassuming as he is. The concert felt intimate with back and forth banter between him and the audience. It made you feel like you were seeing him play in a small back room bar....except this audience was hanging on his every word. it is great to see him get the recognition he deserves and wonder about what might have been. His guitar playing is still strong and it was great to see him play all this hits. The evening was over far too quickly.
The show started with Arum Rae who we had never heard but we were awestruck by her talent. By the time Rodriguez we were in our glory and loved every minute of his performance. His easy charm and his obvious love for performing were apparent and his guitar playing was amazing.
I was a young university student in the early 90's in South Africa when I got introduced to Rodriguez's music. I can't believe I was so fortunate to actually see him live in Edmonton, where I now live, it brought back so many fond memories. Thanks for still performing Rodriquez!!!
