Roxy Music Live in Concert

Roxy Music was formed in 1970 by lead singer and songwriter Bryan Ferry and bass guitarist Graham Simpson. Ferry had just lost his job teaching ceramics at a girls' school for holding unauthorized record-listening sessions. Ferry decided to start a band and put out ads to attract musicians. He enlisted Andy Mackay on saxophone and oboe, Roger Bunn on guitar and Dexter Lloyd on drums. Brian Eno, who has found enormous success as a solo artist, was also brought on for synthesizer and treatments, although he left soon after the group's second album release. The difference in style between Ferry and Eno would create the band's signature sound, but it also eventually drove the two apart. Roxy Music gained critical attention quickly and was signed to Island Records almost immediately upon the release of their debut self-titled album in 1972. The album was a significant success, reaching No. 10 on the UK charts. Things really heated up when the group performed their debut single "Virginia Plain" on BBC's "Top of the Pops." The song was later listed on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Debut Singles of All Time list. Their signature style was displayed for the world and became a template for the glam trend in the UK. The band released their second album, For Your Pleasure, in 1973. This album turned out to be Eno's last project with Roxy Music, a lineup change that would send the band in a new direction. They released Stranded in 1973, Country Life in 1974, and Siren in 1975. Rolling Stone referred to Stranded and Country Life as marking "the zenith of contemporary British art rock." The group took a break in 1976 before reuniting to record Manifesto in 1979, Flesh and Blood in 1980 and their final studio album Avalon in 1982. After taking a second and final hiatus that began in 1983, Roxy Music got back together for their first reunion tour in 2001. Since then, Rolling Stone has ranked Roxy Music No. 98 on their "The Immortals -- The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list, and in 2019, Roxy Music was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

    Amazing!

by Billy on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

So many times you get to a 50th anniversary event and talent is mediocre or it’s a cover band as there are very few original members. Roxy was most of the original lineup and they have not missed a step. Tight, we’ll reversed and as good as when I saw them in 1978! Don’t miss them!!

    Roxy 50

by MishMash on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Venue was not sold out, tickets were reissued to “an upgrade” as it was put. Had bought first row aisle tickets on the corner of upper balcony specially because of knee and neck issues. Aisle ticket to be able to extend my leg on occasion and corner to be looking at stage without turning head much. I asked for an aisle seat but was denied. The upgrade was middle of aisle on the side. Needles to say very uncomfortable for me. Eventually we just moved ourselves into more comfortable open seats. The opening act wasn’t anyone I’d like to see again, but that’s just me. It appeared some people enjoyed it. Roxy overall was good, music was great and for the most part had the same energy and tempo as years gone by. The video show might well have been great from the floor but from upper level the way the screens were set made watching live shots of the band unpleasant. Picture didn’t line up, body mid and lower section, or middle and bottom row of screens, was okay only slightly off,, but visually upper part of body, top row of screens, appeared cut off and offset. Overall not a bad night and Bryan Ferry still sounds great.

Clearly Bryan can't sing like he use to, but it was a great farewell to my favorite band!

    Broken Hearted

by Beth S on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Given the lyrical nature of Roxy Music’s songs, having the dissonant shrieking vocals of St. Vincent as an opening act was an odd and unwelcome choice. The dulcet tones of Bryan Ferry and haunting musical strains of his band - in every incarnation, formed the backdrop of my early life, starting 50 years ago. And I continue to love them. The members of the band and backup singers at the Toronto tour kick-off were beyond every expectation. Light show ditto. While the tonal quality of Bryan’s voice is still there it’s heartbreaking that he just can’t belt it out anymore. An echo of my recent Phil Collins disappointment, yet not the spectacular Eagles tour date here before the death Glenn Frye in 2016. I wouldn’t have missed the Roxy Music concert for anything, and I’m very glad I bought the Silver VIP Experience, but my heart was broken that the last time I will see them was not a high note.

    First date

by DeerPark on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Just Another High ? It was at times, such as Editions of You, Do the Strand, Remake Remodel. Their classic In Every Dreamhome a Heartache was fab, with Ferry whispering mostly, which was very effective. Likely to save his weakened voice though, since he is 77 years olde ! Sadly no songs from Stranded, but those songs are hard on the vocalist. If you love Avalon, you would have loved this show, as six songs from it were played. The backdrop and lighting were quite spectacular and effective. The men are not in their 20's anymore, but at least they gave us another Hi.

    Obstructed seat

    by K. W. on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Loved the set list. I have to report that section 101, row 10, seat 1&2 are obstructed view by the safety plexiglass on the next section. This should have been identified in the seating map.

    Underwhelming Disappointment

by The Soultaker on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Judging from the half-filled Scotiabank Arena, a lot of people figured out this concert was going to be a dud. Brian Ferry is well past his prime and his farewell tour with Roxy Music should have been years ago. The graphics on the screen behind the band were overwhelming to the point you could not see the performers on stage. No Like a Hurricane, no Slave to Love and no Take a Chance with Me and NO ENCORE! Should have invested our money in Elton John tickets who was playing just down the road and gave the fans a 2 1/2 hours show with three encore songs. This last gasp by Roxy Music is for the extreme die-hard fans only, all others stay clear.

Bryan’s range may not be entirely what it once was, but it’s still very smooth. A great show, well worth it

Concert feels that it was shutdown a few songs too soon...

by DJKnox on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

When Roxy Music walked off the stage a minute before 11pm, and with 3 or 4 very popular songs not yet played, the encore of Flesh and Blood, and Take A Chance With Me (or at least In The Midnight Hour or Eight Miles High) seemed like the suitable and needed climax. Then the lights were abruptly turned on, cutting off the concert prematurely. Whether that was bad planning, or whether Roxy Music had no intention to play anything further I cannot know, but the difference between a good concert and a great concert was the finishing with a couple of those songs. How they felt they could have such a tour and not play Take a Chance with Me and Flesh and Blood is quite remarkable. Otherwise, the concert was very good, with very good sound and stage craft.

    What? NO encore

by Steelyfan on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

I have so many thoughts about this show as a fan who has loved and listened to Roxy music for 40 years. My expectations were high with respect to the selection of songs they included in the Setlist and unfortunately this expectation was not met. This show was more or less just a combination of their most known “hits” and therefore completely missed the mark for hard-core Roxy Music fans who wanted to hear B-Sides and some of the rarer cuts. I’ve been fortunate to see a couple of other Roxy Music shows and the opportunity to include songs from the beginning of their career and weave a pathway through the catalogue, telling the Roxy story would have been appreciated and would have marked the occasion as something special- not just another show. Some additional impressions: Andy Mackay- Absolutely incredible job! His solos were atmospheric and allowed fans to soak up every moment. Phil Manzanera- Kudos on a magical and blistering quitar solo in “ In Every Dreamhome a Heartache” This is one of my hands down favourite guitar pieces and worth the $400 we paid for tickets to see him do it live! Similarly to the last few times I’ve seen solo Bryan Ferry shows, sadly Mr. Ferry has all but lost his voice. It’s like he can’t put enough breath into pushing out the notes. He danced and moved on stage very little than he has in previous shows. And he failed to connect with the audience through storytelling, explaining the meaning behind the music or dating some of the numbers that they played. Although it pains me to say this, overall his performance was quite disappointing. Other highlights: The stage, light show was dreamy The band sounded incredible The Main Thing was a nice surprise! Lastly…NO encore. This shocked the crowd and it was noticed that songs such as Virginia Plain we’re just that…plain missing!

    Very Roxy

by Mustang on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

I have waited years to see Roxy music. Last time was in the 70’s in Vancouver. I totally loved the concert. I think he should have played at Massey Hall, given the fact tickets sales were down. Bryan Ferry attracts an older crowd. Young people are not familiar. I would go to see him/them over and over again. I wanted to hear like a Hurricane, I was told when he tours on his own he sings it. I look forward to the the next one if there is another tour. Thank you Bryan if you see this comment you were awesome❤️❤️❤️

    Disappointed

by Jazz on 2022-09-10Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Sound was great. Visuals were great but Bryan Ferrys voice was brutal. I had to leave early as my ears were bleeding.
