Sean Kingtson- a nice voice a mediocre performance
by Salmon on 2009-10-02MACEWAN BALLROOM - CALGARYConcert started at 6; he went on at 8:35 and was done by 9:20. The good news was I got to Wal-Mart to get cat food and was home early enough to watch the rest of the hockey game. He seemed to do a lot of lip-synching; or singing over himself to save his voice. When he did acapella portions of the song his voice was Jamaican and pleasent but he seemed to be straining for the majority of the show (which was odd to be because he only played for about 45 minutes and 10 minutes of this was his DJ playing snippets of other peoples songs while Sean wiped sweat off his face). He seemed like a rookie on the stage, which I guess is fair for a 19 year old. He got annoying at times due to the fact his MC must have said "put your hands up" about 30 times in every song and whenever he spoke he started with "check this out". His encore was unnecessary; he played for 40 minutes (30 if you don't count the DJ playing other people's music) then left for 4 to come back and do his big hit "Fire Burning". His main hits were received well by the audience and his songs were all catchy. It's too bad he didn't really sing or do much to go along with them. Something else odd about the show as a random guy on the stage in a hat; he didn't do anything except lean on a table behind the keyboard/bass player. The entire show he just sorta sat there and looked out. He moved twice from what I could tell; once to throw a towel at the drummer, and once to put his hoody on under his hat. He left the stage immediately at the end of the show; only Sean Kingston got out of the faster. All in all it's $80 I won't get back; it was nice to see his hits. He needs someone to help him with his stage performance or light show or something. If he is going to lip synch there have to be more distractions. I also saw way more of his behind than I wanted to; I felt bad for him at times wondering why no one in the band or any of his back stage cronies told him that his great tighty-whiteys were hanging out with part of his cheeks and a little crack. He also didn't seem as jolly and friendly as he does on tv; maybe he was having an off night. I was told by a friend who was the doorman that he showed up an hour late and had to rush out of there because he had to get to his next gig. Maybe it through his game off. Regardless he could have at least pulled up his pants when he went offstage for an encore. Ending on a good note; his voice is pretty smooth.
