SLOAN IN CONCERT:

Power pop titans Sloan have achieved cult status in their native Canada and built a diehard following around the world thanks to their potent blend of crunchy riffs and catchy hooks. The band's four members share songwriting duties, and the result is a wildly diverse sound that encompasses jaunty piano ditties, charging pop-punk, and stirring power ballads. Each member sings their own songs in concert, treating fans to a steady stream of distinct styles – from Chris Murphy's bright tenor to Patrick Pentland's rocking growl – before wowing them with gorgeous four-part harmonies. Their all-together-now enthusiasm in concert has ticket buyers singing along on stadium-worthy anthems like "Underwhelmed," "The Other Man," and "The Rest of My Life." Every aspect of Sloan's eclectic, infectious sound is cranked to the max when they perform live, and fans can’t get enough of the rocking party.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott formed Sloan in 1991 while attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Guitarists Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined shortly after, creating the core lineup that’s remained unchanged for over 25 years. The band made their full-length debut in 1992 with Smeared, and instantly caught on with alternative rock fans in Canada. Unfortunately they had frequent disputes with their record label Geffen, who balked at promoting their hooky rock outside Canada during the grunge-obsessed '90s, and following the release of their 1994 sophomore album Twice Removed they split with the label. They used their own label Murderecords to release their 1996 album One Chord to Another, which was a huge critical and commercial success at home and received rave reviews when it was released in the US a year later. The group amassed fans through the late '90s and early '00s with perpetual touring and consistently solid records, and in 2006 they finally cracked the US charts with their eighth album Never Hear the End of It. Their popularity continued to grow abroad, leading up to the Top 10 debut of their 2014 album Commonwealth on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Well into their third decade together, Sloan continues to impress both critics and fans with their adventurous recordings and powerhouse concerts.

Was not a big fan of Sloan beyond the singles before this show, but the band was so good, I've been picking up old albums.

    Sloan: As cool as ever

by Jeffmaaaaaan on 2016-04-25Imperial - Vancouver

6th Time I've seen these guys, but never at a venue as small and as intimate as The Imperial. It was unreal! You could actually make eye contact with the guys! The format of playing one whole album followed by, as Chris put it, "Career Review Material" was a great idea, and a great way to engage both "Superfans" and general followers. And the cherry on top, Andrew walked right past me on my way out of the club, and I got to give him a pat on the back and thank him for such a great show. Those guys are too cool. Probably my favourite Sloan show yet!

    Sloan were a huge disappointment

by Ekimkilgan on 2014-12-06The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Was really excited and eager to go to this event. Have been looking to see Sloan play for years. What a big let down. They played too many back catalogue and "B" side songs. The crowd couldn't really get into the show. Hits songs were few and far between. They killed all the momentum and energy every time by following fan favourite songs with several mediocre ones. Sound engineering was unbalanced. All instruments were well managed but vocals took a big back seat really deadening the whole experience. Concert was over by 11:15 pm leaving us wondering what to do with the rest of the night

    Wish they played longer

by FingerBlaster on 2014-10-21Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Although it was an "Evening With" type of event, I wish they played longer as they have so many good tracks. They played some deep tracks and had a good positive energy.

Boring. They looked like they didn't want to be there. I've never seen a band look sadder. I know the 90s was about melancholy but it doesn't make for a good show. A huge disappointment.

    Great show!

by Hipdude on 2012-11-15Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

It was a great show overall. The venue was a suitable size but the sound was a bit off (think the sound system was too powerful for the room). Watching and listening to the Twice Removed album (from top to bottom) was a cool experience. Afterwards, the band played some good old classic hits (Good in Everyone, The Lines you Amend, Money City Maniacs, and Underwhelmed to name a few).

    Sloan was solid

by honkyrulespools on 2012-11-15Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

Great time. Loud and distorted like a garage band. It took a while for the sound mixer to wake up before it got relatively OK. The band was on especially for a Monday night. First experience at this venue. Hope to see more shows there.

    Sloan Great, venue/crowd questionable

by AutoBusMG on 2012-11-14Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

Bad venue for concerts, My tickets said doors open at 8:00, band went onstage at 8:05, I am guessing 8:05 based on the song they were on when I got there along with numerous other people at 8:20. Show ended at ~10:25. Alcohol was not allowed in the 'Studio' (Ironically named after Molson Canadian), all alcohol had to be consumed outside of the room. I was the designated driver but it still seems odd to not allow anybody holding a drink into the same room that the concert is being held. Band was noticeably frustrated by lack of any energy by the crowd, it was pretty much silent except for a smattering of applause after every song except for a few of us stuck at the back. Went to show the following night at the Starlight room in Waterloo, they played the same exact setlist but the crowd was 10 times better so the concert was 20 times better. NOTE: The band was great, I will however reconsider ANY concert held at this venue in the future.

    Twice Removed Tour

by PoorBoy on 2012-09-27The Pyramid Cabaret - Winnipeg

It may have been call the Twice Removed Tour but it was the scorching second set,the party set as Patrick called it, that made the night unforgettable. The band came on at 10 and performed the entire Twice Removed album in order. Snowsuit Sound and People Of The Sky were among the standouts of this set. Twice Removed although beloved definitely has it slow spots. Not so with the second set. after about a 15 break the band came out and launched into One Chord To Another's Everything You've Done Wrong then straight into Who Taught You To Live Like That and had the crowd moving. The band then tore through 13 more that included The Good In Everyone, Fading Into Obscurity, Take Good Care Of The Poor Boy, Unkind, Emergency 911 and the main set closer Money City Maniacs. There was also a running guitar smashing gag running throughout the show in honor of Patrick's birthday. At the end of the final encore song If It Feels Good Do It Patrick was presented a black with green stripes pointy guitar which he proceeded to shred quick solo on before destroying it to the crowd's delight.

    Twice Removed & the hits!

by Sloangirl on 2012-09-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I've been to many Sloan concerts in the past and they don't disappoint. This time was even better though because Sloan was their own opening act. Sloan performed their critically acclaimed 1994 album "Twice Removed", took a break, and then came back and performed a concert of their hits from the last 20 years. The Commodore was full and the crowd was singing and grooving along. The "Twice Removed" album package that they're selling at merch looks amazing too and I'm looking forward to reading all the stories and looking at the classic photos. Can't wait for the next past album tour... my vote's for "One Chord To Another". Slooooo-oooooaaaaan!

After 20 years, they're still incredible!

by Stugots05 on 2011-08-19Echo Beach - Ontario Place - Toronto

So this was a free show and I gotta hand it to Sloan for not treating it as most other bands might treat a free show. Having been to some other free concerts in the past, the effort isn't usually there but Sloan held their end of the bargain and put on an incredible concert all the same, even going so far as kicking out a pair of drunk idiots that were ruining the show for several folks around them. If you're a hardcore Sloan fan, you may have been disappointed with how they played it safe and mainly stuck to their singles but given the fact it was a casual fan crowd, i can't really blame them. The opening acts were pretty decent but had a very similar sound... no big deal. All i can say is after 20 years of Sloan I can only hope for 20 more!

    Bloody fantastic!!!

by Jakey on 2011-07-18Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

This was my first Sloan show and it was fantastic!! They totally rocked out, they played almost all their hits (I wanted to hear "the other man" but didn't get it) and they even came out after the show and shmoozed with the audience. They talked a little bit before each song and Chris even said things to the audience like, "i see some old faces, i see some new faces, and i see some people who used to come to our shows then we haven't seen you in a while and now you're back. what happened?". I think it's fantastic when a band is so close to their fans and really appreciates them. The concert though was great, they sounded great, great solos, and a great venue. They also totally pulled off "everything you've done wrong" which sounded different without a horn section but still sounded great!!
