This show was phenomenal.
It had, unfortunately for me, three opening acts--I usually prefer one or two, wanting to get to the bottom line as soon as possible: the headliner.
The first opening act was a Toronto based band (I think) called Pyramid Theorem. Pretty solid instrumentals, but with the usual poor sound quality setup that seems to plague opening acts.
Secondly, and a quarter of the reason I came to the event, was Powerglove. If you do not know these guys, they're a four-piece instrumental outfit that plays power metal medleys of old NES, saturday morning cartoon and movie themes. They're a lot of fun to see, and this was my second time in the same amount of months checking them out.
I'll definitely see these guys when they begin to headline their own tours.
Thirdly, and most unfortunate for me, was UK based hardcore metal band Mutiny Within. I don't like this style of metal--so it's not for me to say whether or not it marred the concert on an unbiased level. It did, however, mar the concert on a personal level for me; as the lead singer went between vocals that sounded like an angry child whining about imagined injustices against him to vocals that sounded like he was throwing a temper tantrum, screaming that he wasn't getting his way.
Not for me, but they seemed to generally please a good majority of the crowd.
And then came the highly anticipated Sonata Arctica. This was my third time seeing them live since 2007, and for the third time, I was not disappointed. Tony Kakko certainly carries a lot of fun stage presence, and he's an all around awesome, super friendly guy both on and off stage. They played a healthy combo of songs from the new album and older songs, including a lot of classics such as Fullmoon, Eighth Commandment, Black Sheep and The Cage--along with a lot of my personal favourites from the new album, such as Juliette.
Every time I have seen Sonata Arctica in Toronto (sadly, I missed one of their '09 concerts at The Sound Academy w/Dragonforce), I have vowed that I will gladly support their returning by purchasing tickets for to see them when they're here. This time was no exception--I can't wait until they return to headline once more, bringing all the cold, snow and ferocity of wolves of Finland with them!
Also, it was at The Opera House, which is a personal favourite of mine, given the intimate nature of the show (it's a very small venue with pretty decent acoustics, so you can see clearly, hear clearly and BE heard clearly pretty much no matter where you are in the hall).
Sonata Arctica - 5/5
Venue - 5/5
Opening Acts - 3/5
Overall - 4/5
