I must confess right from the start that I am not a huge fan of musical theatre. This was only the 4th professional show I've seen, having seen 2 in Toronto and 1 in London's West End. The draw here was simply U2 - we had travelled to the NY/NJ area for a U2 concert and it was only fitting to see Spider-Man while we were in town. We went with low expectations, having followed the reviews for months, and a slim hope of catching Bono or The Edge at the venue since it was the night after the concert. Well, we didn't see either of the U2 lads, but we did enjoy a great evening's entertainment. Reeve Carney was charismatic, all of the singing was great, and I was delighted to recognize Patrick Page as the scientist. We had front row balcony seats next to a launch/landing pad, and the Spider-Man flyers were great fun to watch.
The reworked storyline worked for us - it was straight-forward and familiar - I appreciate the artistry of Julie Taymor and understand the original desire of wanting to make this more intellectual/visionary than a comic, but we weren't looking for culture at a show called "Spider-Man" :-)
We had a choice of seats in the balcony, flying circle or orchestra for the same price - I'd suggest orchestra in future, as the show is designed for folks in those seats.
