SPOON IN CONCERT:

Veteran art rockers Spoon continue to enjoy both indie cred and mainstream popularity, entering their third decade together as one of independent music's most visible crossover successes. As creative in concert as they are in the studio, the band has earned a reputation as a consummate live act, consistently thrilling fans on their critically acclaimed tours with ambitious renditions of fan favorites like "I Turn My Camera On" and "Stay Don't Go". Whether they're treating ticket buyers to cuts from 2014's They Want My Soul or covering bands like the Smiths and Guided by Voices, Spoon brings a passion and energy to the stage that always elevate their shows to the next level.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Spoon was formed in Austin in 1993 by lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno. Following a 1994 EP release the band signed to Matador Records, debuting their first full-length album Telephono to mixed reviews in 1996. By the time the band released the Soft Effects EP in 1997 they had begun to hone in on the more polished, minimal sound they would become known for, but it wasn't until they released the album Girls Can Tell in 2001 that they finally achieved breakthrough success. A string of critically and commercially successful albums followed throughout the decade, including two No. 1 records on the Top Independent Albums chart -- 2005's Gimme Fiction and 2007's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. With their highly anticipated eighth album They Want My Soul hitting shelves in 2014, Spoon has fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Spoon was excellent. Tight, professional. Brit rocked the house. They played old as well as new material."

"I highly recommend seeing them live, because they're fantastic musicians and they play a very interesting set as compared to their albums."

"Spoon's show was as awesome and intricate as their complex studio albums! To be able to pull off the complexity of their studio recordings live was amazing to hear and see. They were so tight and I don't think they made a mistake, and the light show was awesome as well."

Spoon know how to put on a show

by notoriousbigdan on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

Spoon did not disappoint with their live show at the Sound Academy on Monday night (Mar 29, 2010). I thought they sounded great and played a fantastic set list with a good mixture of old and new tunes. The opening acts (Strange Boys and Deerhunter) were also very entertaining - specifically Deerhunter. I didn't give it a 5 because Sound Academy is not the greatest venue - it's too narrow and is not the best 'sounding' venue.

    Spoon were good

    by tiki16 on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

I enjoyed Spoons performance. Vocals were good as was the musicianship. There were feedback issues at times though. The acoustics at the Sound Academy weren't the best. The show was jam packed with barely any room. I'm sure they oversold it. I was midway in front of the mixers and couldn't see a thing. The stage needs to be elevated. It would have to be a really good band before i'd go back to SA. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because the Sound Academy was not the best venue for a show. Otherwise thoroughly enjoyed the show.

    Deerhunter stole the show!!

by ChipmunkWizard on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

Spoon played a very odd set. The first half was very slow, lacked any form of energy and was very repetitive. The band has an excellent formula: steady drum beats, upbeat piano pieces with excellent guitar and vocals by Britt Daniel, but after the first half this formula was so monotonous that the show became uninteresting and almost annoying. The second half of Spoon's set was completely different. While they were still using the same formula they had more energy on stage, the crowd was finally getting into their music and the show lost the repetitive feeling. While there are moments during Spoon's set that I did enjoy their performance as a whole was disappointing. I think this is due to the fact that there is a difference between the energy I get from the albums and the energy the band has on stage. Deerhunter on the other hand played a perfect set (and in my mind stole the show). The had energy from start to finish full of grinding guitars and excellent vocals. They did an excellent job of showing off their talent and convincing me that they are a band I will want to see again and again.

    SPOON OWNED

by OsoSimple on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

Just have to say that the band was amazing - they sounded amazing, the music was amazing - the atmosphere made it alll worth the while. Although the venue got pretty packed and there were some posts and strings obstructing view, the music made it worth it and I had an absolutely amazing time. I definitely recommend these guys to anyone who appreciates a good tune. XO to Spoon!

by Meitschi on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

If you are a fanof Spoon albums, you have to go and watch them live cause they will make you an even bigger fan of their music. The stage was nicely set, with light bulbs scattered all around and lights following the mood. They went from soft to wild making you fall in love with their music all over again.

    great combo

by jordo on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

The combination of two great American Indy bands; Deerhunter and Spoon made the evening really unique. The sounds of Deerhunter live were really raw, melodic and pulsing were followed up by Spoons musically tight guitar rifts and catchy song writing. A great balance!

    Spoon took down the house!

by Amaaanda on 2010-03-30Sound Academy - Toronto

As always, Spoon performed with gusto. They rocked the house, despite the Sound Academy being a terrible venue. They even commented "Wow, this room is narrow, look at you all packed in there!" And why have us line up to even look at merch? That's ridiculous. But the performers were wonderful and gracious, and I can definitely see Deerhunter headlining their own tour sometime soon.

I'm a little late to the Spoon scene, but what a stellar show last night. Two hours of brainy rock (and no, that's not an oxymoron). Britt's voice was in fine form and the band sounded great. Caught most of Deerhunter too and they really impressed as well. A bit of a Jesus and Mary Chain vibe from them, which is a good thing. If you can, check these bands out before they end their tour. A great show at a very resonable price (these days). I look forward to the next time I can catch them in action.
