STARS IN CONCERT:

Concertgoers are in for an emotional tour de force the minute indie pop collective Stars steps on stage. For more than two decades the he said-she-said dynamic of singers Torquill Campbell and Aimee Millan has been making fans swoon with sentimental bliss. Ticket buyers will be treated to highlights from the band's rich and diverse catalog of emotive tunes, from the heart-wrenching "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" to the tender "Do You Want To Die Together?". The vulnerability behind Campbell and Milan's soft voices pairs seamlessly with the band's flourishing instrumentation, resulting in a strikingly raw live experience fans won't want to miss.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer Torquill Campbell and keyboardist Christopher Seligman formed Stars in Toronto in 1998. The duo released their debut album Nightsongs in 2001 before rounding out their sound with bassist Evan Cranley, singer/guitarist Aimee Millan, and drummer Patrick McGee. Their sophomore effort, 2003's Heart, was a delicately crafted collection of chamber pop tunes that earned them a Juno nomination for Alternative Album of the Year and a co-headlining North American tour with Broken Social Scene. Their standout third album, 2004's Set Yourself On Fire, was recorded while the band lived under one roof during a harsh Canadian winter. The resulting set of melancholy tunes was critically praised and spawned some of the band's biggest hits to date including "Ageless Beauty" and "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead". Since then Stars has released six studio albums including 2012's electro pop-driven The North and 2014's surprisingly dance-heavy No One Is Lost.

    great show bad venue

by Havrek on 2010-10-21Bronson Centre - Ottawa

it was an amazing show by the band, and the sound was great, but the venue was like a theater more than a place where you would go to see a concert, changed the atmosphere a lot.

    It was an amazing show!

    by pandora132 on 2010-10-21Bronson Centre - Ottawa

This was my first time seeing the Stars and I loved it. Their choice of songs set a great pace to the evening and their talent was obvious. They also did a great job of highlighting every band member (such a talented band!) and trading off lead singers through the night. I would definitely see them again. Only complaint about the venue - why does it have to be dry?

Great music, great acoustics, odd venue.

by StarsInMyEyes on 2010-10-21Bronson Centre - Ottawa

We really enjoyed seeing The Stars. Their harmonies are great and their voices just go together so well. Amy Millan's voice is incredibly sweet and soft. The stage show was really great ...the lights together with massive amounts of bubbles created a great atmosphere. Overall, they are great performers and the band is really tight! Although the acoustics were great, the Bronson Centre is a really odd venue. It is like being at a high school auditorium (which I suspect it used to be). Standing in the rows is awkward as you are on a slant and you are expected to find and stay in your seat (general admission sort of) as we were told by one of the roving security guards. Strangely, you needed a wristband to stand near the front at the stage, but it was never offered as an option when buying tickets. Our water bottle was confiscated at the door, which was annoying and unnecessary in my honest opinion. I loved The Stars, but I'm not super keen on returning to Bronson Centre, although I probably will as there really isn't another similarly sized venue in Ottawa with acoustics like that.

    Simply outstanding.

by Dollhouse on 2010-05-13The Starlite Room - Edmonton

I've officially discovered my favorite format for concerts. No opening band, and the headliner plays two full sets. This is the second concert in a row that I've seen to have this format (Our Lady Peace was the previous one). Torquil Campbell (lead vocals ) played some old records before the show to set the mood. The band came on stage and played their new album "Five Ghosts" cover to cover. They said very little during the set. They only spoke about how much they enjoyed playing for the crowd. The rose-covered stage added an eerie elegance to the set. The band would periodically throw the flowers into the crowd. An excellent gesture of appreciation in my humble opinion. The second set consited of hits such as "Your ex-lover is dead" and "Take me to the Riot". While I feel like this set could have been longer (especially considering this was the last leg of the tour), the songs sounded impecable. The Starlite room offers wonderful accoustics. The venue is almost magical in how it makes every concert great. I thought the performance quality was extremely high. Torquil Campbel is a very emotional performer which adds an extra level of experience for the audience. It's gut wrenching to look him in the eye while he's so engaged in a song.

It wasn't the set list that I was hoping to hear and the sound quality in the venue did not truly demonstrate the incredible harmonies, but it was a great gig and I can't wait to see them again.

Stars was definitely worth the wait

by Gunis on 2010-05-11The Pyramid - Winnipeg

Although we waited a while before they came on it was completely worth it. They were excellent live, the new album sounds great and I can't wait to buy it. Afterwards they sang their loved hits and even performed treated us with an extra song in the end! The song was 'Tonight' from their first album 'Nightsongs' and I was happy they sang it. They said they'd be back very soon and I simply can't wait to see them again.

    it was so-so

by Jenmore on 2010-05-11The Pyramid - Winnipeg

i have been to Stars shows before, and this one left something to be desired. it wasnt the actually profomance that was disapointing, it was the fact that it was supposed to start at 8, and they didnt go on stage till 10:30, and for the 2 1/2 hours that we were waiting, the crappyest dj on the planet played the crappyest songs from who knows what decade to pass the time. Stars themselves were great, it was nice to see them in such a small venu. it made for a more intimate experince, but the long wait, and the crappy music before hand over shadowed how good they were.

    Stars = awesomeness

The show was great! The setting was intimate and the beers were cheap! My only complaint about the show was that it was too short!

    Fantastic show!

    by Bertinio7 on 2010-05-11The Pyramid - Winnipeg

If there was anything negative to say it was that they were late on stage (Torq did a bit of a DJ'ing set before the actual show), but once up there they blew everyone away. This is not just a studio-crafted band. They sound as good, if not better than their studio releases, that's as high a compliment as I can give any artist. Solid, energetic, entertaining and engaging; they performed well beyond the price of admission and insured another ticket sale when they come back to town.

Stars at the Mod Club 05/05/10

by CWebs on 2010-05-10Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

The a/c wasn't working, we waited 2hours after doors opened...but it didn't matter. STARS put on a great show, once again. They never dissapoint; always full of engery and truly get right into their music. The intimacy of the Mod Club only grew stronger as everyone sang along to old favourites and enjoyed their first experience of new hits. I would recommend a Stars show in a heartbeat.

    Tremendous band...great live show too.

by springhaze on 2010-05-09THE MUSIC HALL - LONDON

I've been a huge Stars fan for years but this was the first time I was able to see them perform live. I always liked their Lolopoloza live album so I wasn't totally surprised by how well they performed but, still, they were so good I just have to note it. Obviously, this is a collection of talented musicians, as well as performers. Great integration of technological needs throughout...very seamless. for me, there is nothing worse than a band trying to do something "funky" with some new piece of equipment and not being able to pull it off... OR having a band whose recorded work is very reliant on technological production/ manipulation who then does only the most scaled back performance. So, I appreciated the blend here. Would DEFINITELY go see them again...will prolly look out for the full "The 5 Ghosts" tour to come after the release of their album on June 22, 2010.

Can't wait for The Five Ghosts!

by KaitlinK on 2010-05-09Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Doors opened at 8pm. No opening band. Air conditioning broken. Stars onstage at 10pm. Played their new album, The Five Ghosts, from beginning to end. It was absolutely mind blowing. They were expected to play 4 encore songs that fans had voted for; they played 7 (Ex-lover, take me to the riot, ageless beauty, heart, elevator, one more night, and calendar girl). Absolute spectacular.

    Stars: Like no other band!

by Atreides on 2010-05-09THE MUSIC HALL - LONDON

LIke I said, the music of Stars is unlike any other band. Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan are a great combination and the creativity of the music is a refreshing change in today's world of manufactured artists and songs. There were a couple stand-outs among the songs from the new (soon to be released) album - Wasted Daylight and Changes. They also played Your Ex-Lover is Dead and Calendar Girl, and some other fan favorites. Good job Stars! Was a pain they only came on at 10:15, but that's typical of club shows.

Stars was good but made us wait

by McBagpipes on 2010-05-09THE MUSIC HALL - LONDON

The first set was their new album and was very good but nothing familiar. Their second set was the hits and that was the best part. They didn't go on till after 10 and we had to stand there for 2 hours which was not reasonable. They ended promptly at midnight with no encore.
