STARS IN CONCERT:

Concertgoers are in for an emotional tour de force the minute indie pop collective Stars steps on stage. For more than two decades the he said-she-said dynamic of singers Torquill Campbell and Aimee Millan has been making fans swoon with sentimental bliss. Ticket buyers will be treated to highlights from the band's rich and diverse catalog of emotive tunes, from the heart-wrenching "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" to the tender "Do You Want To Die Together?". The vulnerability behind Campbell and Milan's soft voices pairs seamlessly with the band's flourishing instrumentation, resulting in a strikingly raw live experience fans won't want to miss.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer Torquill Campbell and keyboardist Christopher Seligman formed Stars in Toronto in 1998. The duo released their debut album Nightsongs in 2001 before rounding out their sound with bassist Evan Cranley, singer/guitarist Aimee Millan, and drummer Patrick McGee. Their sophomore effort, 2003's Heart, was a delicately crafted collection of chamber pop tunes that earned them a Juno nomination for Alternative Album of the Year and a co-headlining North American tour with Broken Social Scene. Their standout third album, 2004's Set Yourself On Fire, was recorded while the band lived under one roof during a harsh Canadian winter. The resulting set of melancholy tunes was critically praised and spawned some of the band's biggest hits to date including "Ageless Beauty" and "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead". Since then Stars has released six studio albums including 2012's electro pop-driven The North and 2014's surprisingly dance-heavy No One Is Lost.

God, it was GREAT to see you again...

by jtree on 2013-03-29The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

They have an amazing, unique sound that they somehow manage to reproduce live. Torquil's energy is incredibly fun to watch, and he and Amy are amazing together on stage. It's impressive when a band's biggest hits are spread relatively evenly over all their albums, so there was a good mix of everything. What I loved most, though, was the sincerity of the band. They were so genuinely happy, and they took the time to tell us that.

    Star

by FlashSavelli on 2013-03-24The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

I've had the absolute pleasure of seeing Stars several times now and this was quite possibly my favourite performance. The entire band is so committed to their art and it shows so much in their live performances. They put 110% of their heart into their shows and if you ever have the chance of seeing them live you should take it!

Stars always put on a great performance.

This is the second Stars concert I have been to. The band always creates a fantastic atmosphere and is really worth seeing live. The venue is fantastic too.

Stars burn bright.. little too bright in spots

by cmacdesign on 2013-03-22Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Totally great energy at the recent Stars show. We were at night one of two.. so Sex, not Death and really enjoyed the whole presentation. Yukon Blonde was GREAT; will happily go see them on their own! My only gripe with Stars was the sound was unbalanced. Torquil and Amy are both fairly soft-styled singers and the synths were tearing my head off and burying the vocal. The Music Hall is a pretty boomy room which doesn't help, but the synths and the kick were totally out of step with the rest of the band. Performances were great though, and likely the second night's audience were given a more sonically balanced experience. So great to have the band home; if you get a chance, go see them!

    Stars shine!

by lookingforgus on 2013-03-22The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Excellent concert, excellent sound. I've seen the Stars perform many times, and they didn't disappoint. Probably my favorite show of theirs so far. And Yukon Blonde was an excellent opener. I highly recommend seeing either or both acts if you're able.

Amazing performances by all of the band members. Torq built great rapport with the audience and it felt like they were genuinely appreciative of the love and support. The only complaint is with the venue; the sound quality was really not the best, even compared to "lower-class" venues in London. There were a few glaring technical issues, but it was the quality overall that was really disappointing. Thankfully the performers made up for it. I would love to see them again in a venue that has a decent audio setup.

    Fire the soundman!

by JGM1 on 2013-03-21Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Great performance, great music. However, the night was almost ruined by the head-numbing kick-drum and badly balanced keyboards and vocals. What a waste!

scary start - then just got great

by McBagpipes on 2013-03-21London Music Hall - LONDON

The opening song "Elevator Love Letter" started off with poor sound. The previous concert where Stars appeared with Metro in London their sound was way off, so I was worried. Then someone fixed it and off we went to an excellent concert with everyone sounding great. Very good mix of old and new with the band seemingly in an extra good mood.

    Stars was wicked!!!

So worth the trip! Starting with the venue it was such a sweet place with amazing acoustics and stars was just unbelievably great live!

Entertaining though sound could have been better

by Kudos on 2010-12-06Métropolis - Montreal

I was reticent about how Stars would perform after having watched the opening act (Young Galaxy), where the sound was way off (e.g., excessive echo on the singer's mic, excessive reverb on the guitar), so much so that it ruined the opening set. But things changed for Stars, and it was nice to see them one last time before they fell off the grid for a while (Amy Millan is pregnant). They mostly serenaded from their current album (The Five Ghosts), which was nice, but all the songs sound very similar. Again, it was the last show on the tour and they were happy to be home in Montreal, which made it feel all that more special. I would recommend that their sound engineer work a little harder to get a proper balance of voice and instruments to those seated in the balcony.

So this was the 7th time seeing Stars this year and the final show in our little groupie tour and it was good one. Sound was pretty good at the Showbox, but they made my husband check his camera which sucked but oh well. Stars gives everything at a show which is one of the things I love about them. None of this too cool for you shit! Set list was the same as the other 3 prior shows we saw but that's fine since each venue/vibe was different. Torq, Amy, Evan, and Pat if you're reading this ... we'll just have to hold on to these shows till you come back again... we'll be there... you can trust us! E&J

Stars played an amazing set...good mix of old and new stuff. The whole band was fantastic but Amy Millan is an indie rock goddess.

    A night out with Stars

by joanneyswong on 2010-10-27Massey Hall - Toronto

I've been waiting for ages to see Stars in concert. Every year I want to go, but I was always stuck in Waterloo for school. I'm glad I got to catch them at Massey Hall (a great venue for an indie back like Stars). Although my seats were a bit further than my usual concerts, I was glad to see them perform songs from all their CDs. Not only that, their opener, Young Galaxy was amazing as well! I would definitely go see them in the future if they come back!

by whateves421 on 2010-10-26The Music Hall - LONDON

Everything was just amazing about their performance, I almost wasn't able to go but I am so glad I did. They played a few new songs and they played a few new songs, their lighting for the show really made the show more magical.

That was a fantastic performance by a spectacular and brilliant band. I was loved it. I would highly recommend seeing Stars live. As one gentleman told me who was collecting money for a charity who Stars is friends with, the albums are nice and everything, but it's really about them playing live. Go see them!

    Stars--Massey Hall

    by deelio3 on 2010-10-25Massey Hall - Toronto

Really amazing. High energy in their hometown for sure! They are superstars! Didn't have the greatest seats up in the left gallery, but I was on my feet most of the concert anyway...
