  • Earle fantastic but Wpg rude!

by Mudonherhigheels on 2010-02-01Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Steve Earle was fabulous but some fans spoiled the intimate evening for everyone, including Steve. Drunken fans were rude, obnoxious and disruptive. Almost made Steve leave the stage. I was horrified to see such behaviour go on throughout the night unpunished! Wpg owes him a big apology. He is a legend and deserves so much more respect than that. Shame on those who tried to ruined it.

  • Obnoxious drunken fans.

The performance by Steve Earle was overshadowed by the boorish, loud behaviour of a few drunk fans. They would not let him engage the audience with stories of experiences with Townes Van Zandt, instead screamed for "COPPERHEAD ROAD!" or "ROCK AND ROLL" while looking at a single player on stage with an acoustic guitar. It caused Earle to lose his cool and make for an uncomfortable show. He was unprofessional, swearing into the crowd and giving the finger. Quite childish. He could have ignored the idiots and continued to play which is what he eventually did. He went to apologize but any good vibe from his music was lost in the anger.

  • Quality entertainment!

Another great night with Steve Earl! Being at an event where one man and one guitar can fill a concert hall and captivate the audience, is always a great experience. If you appreciate Steve for much more than Copper Head Road, it is a must see! thanks Steve. I am also a Hayes Carl fan so it was a great evening.

As a long time Steve fan he tried to pour out his passion for Townse Vansant, only to be heckled by some bad drunks who just wanted the rock and roll show. Anyone who has been there from the beginning and understands where Steve was coming from. This show was hampered by those sad two fisted drinkers...who should have been tossed right from the start. I only hope that Steve understands there are us die hard fans who will support him and his music for some time to come.

  • disapointing

I was looking to hear some of his older songs , especially from the 'Guitar Town' CD. I thought he was engaging dispite some very ignorant people in the crowd. He is still very talented.

The concert was great. Earle did a great mixture of old and new stuff. his take on the Townes Van Zandt material was very entertaining. the only factor that ruined the event was the jerks who were so rude and drunk who kept on interupting his songs and especially his intros to songs and stories. But Steve Earle is very entertaining

  • Steve channels Townes

Steve Earle gave us an interesting and personal insight into the music of Townes Van Zandt.

It was my first time seeing Steve Earle, and I found the man to be charming, straight forward and a wonderful story-teller. I attended because he is currently touring on his release of Townes Van Zandt songs. The ones he played were fantastic, I was just a little disappointed he didn't play more of them. Steve Earle is definitely worth seeing live, I would just recommend not seeing him in Winnipeg. The audience was terrible, drunk, and obnoxious. Several times, Steve stopped telling some clever anecdote because of hecklers who would not shut up. It was embarrassing. So go see him play anywhere but here.

  • terrible crowd/good show

    by g4musicans on 2010-01-30Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Last night Steve Earl played as professional as any mucian could, considering the unruly crowd he had to contend with. There were so many loud drunks in the audience it was difficult to hear him talk and perform. The crowd in front of us were so bad at times he just gave up, obviously and rightfully discouraged, however persevered to the end. We had a group behind us who consistantly talking loudly (drunk) and several people around us asked them to be quiet, complained to the security, and yet they were allowed to continued and really ruined the show for us,and all in our section. I have never been to such an embarrasing display of disrespect of a preformance in my life. I frequent a wide verity of venues in Winnipeg from the WSO to rock shows. We are extremely lucky we have excellent local talent, and able to host international preformers, which I have always appreciated. Myself, I play in several bands and feel ashamed what this crowd put Mr. Earl and the rest of the audience through. I would have walk out if I had been Mr. Earl.

Was a good show, too bad I had to share it with drunken fools. Next time limit booze sales!

Steve Earle was a wonder to watch at the Burton Cummings Theatre. Great venue! Great musician! Too bad about the guy in the audience who enjoyed yelling (way to loudly) . Perhaps a security guard could have dealt with this guy. Overall -way to go Steve!

  • Powerful simplicity

by Earlefan on 2010-01-30Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

I defy anyone to sit at a Steve Earle concert, when he is just standing there on stage by himself, with just a guitar and the songs of his mentor Townes Van Zan Zandt, and not be moved/impressed. Townes songs easily fit into Steve's catalogue and it is easy to see the influence that Townes has had on Steve. There was a certain tiredness to Steve's voice on this night which gave all the songs a certain weathered feel. It wasn't so much that he wasn't clear or that thre was no energy, it was that the songs were stripped down to the basic elements. Just a man with a guitar, a setlist of incredible songs, and the balls to play the songs the way he wants. Fantastic show.

  • Steve Earle is unforgettable!

This concert couldn't possibly have been better. I only wish I could have recorded it so that I'd be able to listen to it over and over again. Steve Earle is an icon and an artist, and I am honored to have had the privilege of seeing listening to him perform live. I'd like to personally thank him for getting me through some tough times.

  • steve Earle was at his best

I thought he was the best I've seen of his performances for awhile - he was very entertaining as well as the great sound he had.

  • STEVE EARLE

We enjoyed the show. Good blues & really enjoyed his dialogue!! Would have loved to have heard Satellite radio!! Would have appreciated if "that guy" in the audience would have quit yelling "Copperhead Rd". Yeah - of course Steve played it. However, Steve's material is more than the one song !!! (Also wanted a TShirt & no guy shirts)

  • A man and his guitar

by RedWheatBeer on 2010-01-29Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

It is fantastic when you can see a musician with a single instrument keep the audience engaged in the performance. The man does not need a band. I was hoping to hear Guitar Town, but my other favorites (including Galway Girl) all got their time on stage. Definitely a lot of focus on the Townes album, which I don't consider Steve's best work (probably because it is not original)...

I have been fotunate enough over the years to spend an evening with Steve Earle and just as a good wine, his shows keep getting better with age. This acoustic tribute to Towns Van Zandt was incredible. Steve's rendition of Lefty and Pancho made my evening.

  • Steve Earl & Hayes Carll - Excellent Show

A very great show with a lot of Steve's covers of the songs of Townes Van Zant. A very nice 90 minutes of good music.

  • I'm not the best judge.....

I bought the tickets for hubby. I only knew three of the songs - My Old Friend the Blues (which I did not know was his), City of Imigrants (which I love) and Copperfield Rd,(which I wish he had done first so Buddy and Jim Bob would not have shouted for it throughout the entire show.) I heard there was a fight and I think it's a bad idea for the Jack Singer to now allow booze - it seemed to cause some disruption - I heard there was fight and there were many getting up during the show, presumably to visit the washroom. None of which is Steve's fault. Just a guy and a guitar...and a whole auditorium paying attention - that's talent. I loved his story telling and learning that we share the exact birth date and year! Would I go again? Probably not. Would I buy hubby the tickets again. Yep.
