  • Okay, I guess

I hadn't seen Steve live since 1987 and was really looking forward to it. I was encouraged to see that he was going to be unplugged as he was back in '87. I was disappointed that this concert was part of Steve's Townes Van Zandt hero worship tour. I came to hear Steve Earle's songs, not a bunch of competent covers of some pretty average Van Zandt compositions. Steve is an awesome songwriter but we didn't get to hear much of his original stuff. As near as I can figure, he only played 4 songs from his 3 best albums (Guitar Town, Exit 0, Copperhead Road). Steve's music used to be really compelling. Last night, it was well executed but soulless. Steve needs to leave Greenwich Village and move back to Texas to reconnect with what make him great. He should also ditch the left wing political crapola.

An amazing lyricist, storyteller, and musician. It felt like you were sitting around the living room, having a couple of beers and passing the guitar. An amazing venue, a legendary artist, and songs that helped write the history of music. If you don't see this, you are missing an important moment in music history.

  • Relaxing Evening With Hayes and Steve

by Bean13 on 2010-01-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The show left a huge smile on my boyfriends face. Long time fan of Steve Earle, has all his albums and knows every song by heart. We were surprised and extreamly glad to learn that Hayes Carll was opening for him. We have all his albums to and I've personally been listening to him for over a year now. This acoustic show was my first and I'm so glad my ears were not ringing at the end. Guess thats an age thing...likeing things more mellow. I do recommend this show for a calming evening out on the town with a little boost. Thanks Steve and Hayes.

  • Steve Earle and the shortcomings of Calgarians

by Macdaddy on 2010-01-28Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Steve Earle provided a highly entertaining show with interesting, thoughtful comments between songs. It was truly a great show for Steve Earle fans. For me, the show was marred significantly by the rudeness and insensitivity of some of those in attendance at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. When Steve Earle is singing, please don't converse loudly, answer your cell phone, or worse yet sing along loudly (and off key), unless Steve invites you to do so. For some unexplained reason, the Jack Singer suspended a past policy of banning alcoholic beverages in the performing space. People were bringing in as much as they could carry, then having to get up repeatedly go to the washroom, forcing entire rows of people to rise to let them pass. Then finally, a fist fight between two drunken louts breaks out in directly in front of my wife and me. Great, in the Jack Singer no less, one of Calgary's best performing spaces. I think that the Jack Singer should reinstitute the no alcohol policy and Calgary audiences should demonstrate more respect, for the performer and for each other.

  • Steve Earle and Opening Act

by joelpower98 on 2010-01-28Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The opening act was interesting-the guy couldn't sing, but boy, could he pick a guitar! Then Steve came out, and he can sing very well, but the lyrics were often hard to understand. He must enunciate! Very folk songish night. It felt like a night in the 70's with old folk song artists. Of course there was some blues. The highlight for me was when Steve picked up his mandolin and started playing old irish tunes from the Tenessee hills. He did play that mandolin very well. Why do people in the audience have to yell out and heckle the guy "Play Copperhead Road!" They kept on yelling out all night. Have some respect for the man. Don't be so rude!

  • Not worth the money!!

by Dickwong on 2010-01-28Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

Very Disappointing. As a folk singer, Steve Earl is not very entertaining. The guitar playing is very average, and his vocals need some cover, as they are very exposed in fine acoustics of Jack Singer auditorium. His entire set primarily payed homage to an unknown, long dead, and apparently not very talented folk singer Tams Towns (?). Hard to tell exactly who/what Steve was talking about as he mumbled his way through most of the show. Only recognized 4 songs of his entire show, and 3 of those were barely recognizable. The lead in advertisement should have identied this event as a solo show, as most solo's I have seen from ageing/fading stars seem primarily a cash grab, and like this one, not worth the money I paid.

  • Steve Earle comes to Townes

by KLLyourself on 2010-01-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Fabulous tribute to the late great Townes Van Zant -- a great American blues/folk singer/songwriter -- performed intimately on stage with a myriad of acoustic instruments. Hayes Carll was the opening act solidly winning over the crowd and warming up the atmosphere for Steve Earle's wonderful performance to come. I have never been to such a concert before and was truly impressed and quite thankful to be able to hear some of my favorite Townes' songs sung aloud with feeling and conviction. Thanks Steve!

  • Intimate & Incredible

by NicoleFromCalgary on 2010-01-28Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! What a show. Steve sounded great...gave me chills and brought me close to tears several times. Highlights were his cover of Ian Tyson's 'Summer Wages' & Galway Girl.

  • Steve Earle was great, as expected!

by oldfriend on 2010-01-28Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Steve Earle once again proved why he is a living legend, this time by paying tribute to his friend ,mentor and legend Townes Van Sant. Great mix of Townes songs with Steves own made for an excellent show.

  • Steve Earle

by Andrea50 on 2010-01-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Voice was really good. Played for almost 2 hours. This is the second time I have seen Steve Earle and both were solo. I would love to see Steve Earle perform with a band. I wish he would have talked less where as my sister enjoyed that part.

  • Steve Earle is worth seeing

by Blaire on 2010-01-27Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time seeing Steve Earle live. He has a great voice & comes across as a really genuine guy. His show was great. I was however disappointed with the fact that I had not prepared myself well enough for the show. I became very familiar with the Steve Earle Essentials album which obviously includes favourites like Guitar Town & Nowhere Road. Being that Steve was onstage without a band, I guess, means that he is somewhat limited to which songs he should play. All in all, the show was fantastic... I just would have given my left arm to hear guitar town & The Devil's Right Hand.

Amazing! He is so quintessential. Amazing one man, with one musical instrument, could play that much heart and soul AND leave one a feeling they're sitting visiting in their living room with this person! An unforgettable experience.
