    SwanLake 2021

by MamaLabbe on 2021-11-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I think the show was beautiful. What I think would have made it more, a dance-off between black swan and Odette to truly break the spell over the prince. I feel that would have been powerful to watch.

Not Enough Covid Precautions in Theatre

by L. W. on 2021-11-08Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The show itself was spectacular!!! Highly enjoyed ourselves and it is so wonderful to have the Ballet back. Impressed with the Covid Protocols at the door to enter the building and the theatre. We found as a group that inside the theatre it was extremely uncomfortable. It was stated that masks had to be worn in the theatre during the entire performance. Masks were not mandatory in designated areas of eating and drinking. While most people complied, there were a number of people entering the theatre with a bottle of water, drink or food and not wearing masks the entire show. This includes children under 12 years old with no vaccinations. We found it completely stressful sitting beside unmasked individuals (very close proximity) without them wearing masks. We spend a lot of money on tickets and it is unfortunate to have to be preoccupied with unmasked people coughing and talking. We will have to pass on attending any additional shows until this can be dealt with and actually enforced. Sad that a small few have to ruin it for others. Again we have heard numerous comments about this and are far from alone it this unsafe environment.

Uneven Execution & No Live Music

by Josiah on 2021-11-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I was very disappointed to find out as the show started there was no live orchestra (I feel like that is half the point of the ballet). This was not noted when I bought tickets or anywhere else (that I noticed. It is possible they posted a note somewhere, but obviously if they did it wasn't very clear). So already, I felt that the price I paid for entry was cheapened. If there was a live orchestra, they were never referenced, never applauded by the performers at the curtain call, so I would be shocked if they were hiding the orchestra somewhere unseen and just never thanked or mentioned them. The ballet itself was only okay. The dancers were very strong, and the ability they showcased was impressive at times, however the direction and costume design was very weak at times. Rothbart's costume was muddled and confusing, and the performance was very one note (walk on stage, just flap your wings for 10 seconds and then walk off stage again). This is done multiple times throughout the show with no other nuance in those moments, and the costume didn't help (looked like a fancy halloween costume with a weird hair piece). The opening dance choreography was very repetitive despite the dancers bringing their all. The Dance of The Little Swans was quite good (especially considering this was their first major performance in over 18 months). Overall, the lack of originality or unique perspective brought to the classic lead to an overall flat experience with nothing new being said (and in a lot of ways, detracted from the experience with weird choices made by the director / choreographer). Did not feel worth the money despite the talented dancers (the twin dancers especially stood out as a fantastic swan queen(s)). Would only give this ballet one more chance to impress, but this was not it.

    Beautiful Performance

So wonderful to be in the theatre watching a live show. Wonderful performances and immersive experience. Captivating from start to finish. Will definitely support more Alberta ballet shows.

    Nice Evening

by Swan&Crow on 2021-11-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

No social distancing but at least people were vaxxed. Dancers were great but I miss live music rather than canned. Was great to get out of the house for a live performance.

    Great ballet, but…

by Ryan on 2021-11-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

At least three people in front of me were on their cell phones for half the show. I wish there were ushers that would stop this behaviour. Too distracting. Probably wont go see their next show until im confident people have re-learned their theatre etiquette.

    Wow

by Megz on 2021-11-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

From parking to the actual dancing it was a great evening! We had waited 18 months to see Swan Lake and it was worth it! My 15 y.o. loved it as well which in these days of Youtube shorts is quite an accomplishment. We we ushered in quite speedily from Vax check to our actual seats as we arrived in plenty of time as noted on the email. The dancers were wonderful after such a hiatus; kudos for maintaining during the pandemic! Thank you for the wonderful night out; it was a long time coming!!

    Great First Experience

by Sean on 2021-11-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

This was my first time seeing a ballet. I'd never gone to see one, even though I enjoyed the music and story. Highly recommend going to see a ballet! My 'married with children' attitude towards it as a man has disappeared. You can be a straight guy and still have a blast during a night at the ballet.

    Outstanding!!

by Manny on 2021-11-02Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I don’t frequent the ballet, but that will change after swan lake. While a live orchestra would have been preferred, this was still an absolutely incredible performance that left me speaking about for days afterwards. The Alberta Ballet should be very proud of this achievement.

    Ballet review

by Kathleen on 2021-11-02Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

It was gorgeous! Wondering why they left out several dances though?!?! Needed to have ushers to help us with finding our seat.

An excellent even - perfect performance.

by SM on 2021-11-02Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

First time my friend and I had seen Swan Lake. A totally satisfying experience. COVID protocols at the Jubilee kept us feeling very safe, and able to enjoy our first experience in a public place for way too long~ a beautiful show.

Gorgeous. I love the music and know it so well. Wasn't disappointed. I have never seen the ballet for Swan Lake before. It was enchanting, wonderful, tender. Beautiful costumes.

    Did not meet my expectation

by C. Z. on 2021-11-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

A simplified version of Swan Lake. I think I did miss some music and dance especially in Act 3. I hope they need to recover themselves due to the impact from this pandemic is the reason. I hope a real high level performance will come to us soon.

Alberta Ballet's production of Swan Lake was outstanding.

by Glenna on 2021-11-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Alberta Ballet's production of this beautiful classic ballet was outstanding: the dancers, the costumes, the set, choreography! Everything was done to perfection. For me, this was a trip down Nostalgia Lane because the last time I saw Swam Lake was with my mother in Covent Gardens. That was many years ago and she has since passed away. Thanks for providing the joy of seeing this wonderful ballet again.

    Beautiful but lacking

by Caity on 2021-11-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The dancing was beautiful but not having the orchestra made it not as grand as it should have been. Also disappointed with the seating, expected during Covid to have physical distancing like at the movie theatre. It was not. We were all squished in together. It was unsettling, hearing people coughing during the ballet.
