Good show, a walk down the memory lane
by AlatarielArtanis on 2011-05-12Rexall Place - EdmontonNothing really unexpected. SOAD played the old popular faves, some of htem in new and sarcastic interpretaion; the crowd roared and flashed the cigarette lighters at all the "ballads" as per usual; Serj Tankian's and Daron Molokian's vocals were out of this world (and the Armenian vocal tradition's roots flying completely over the head of 99% of North American metalheads) - as per usual; guitar shredding orgasmically enjoyable. A good, solid show overall, if rather abruptly ended with a "you guys are beautiful" by Serj followed by the band's swift flight from the stage. The venue security and logistics were a disaster, though - lines were winding round and round and round Rexall Place with cops strolling through making loud public service announcements that NOW would be the time to get rid of all your weapons, drugs and alcohol. The lineups were so horrendous, I missed the entire opening act of Gogol Bordello (which I heard was quite good). It's not like the event staff didn't know in advance how many people to expect; no ide what on earth took them so unfathomably long to process the people. And the completely unjustifiable random pickings by the venue staff on people on the edges of the crowd for using their crappy "soap dish" and camera phones to snap pictures of the band were downright appalling. Bottom line: great event, shitty venue. But unfortunately, Rexall Place is Edmonton's only indoor facility with the capacity to host an event of this scale, despite it being just a cheap and nasty skating rink with horrid acoustics.
