About

Who explores a coral reef, plays in an octopus’s garden, and joins the jellyfish ballet – all before snack time?  The Backyardigans! Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha, Uniqua and Austin are back on stage, singing and dancing and ready to plunge sea deep into adventure. Dive into the action as these five friends explore clues, discover underwater magic, and match wits with an all-too-tidy octopus and a pair of playful (but messy!) dolphins. With a splashy range of song-and-dance styles to wade along to – including psychedelic soul, Bollywood, bossa nova, and more – our heroes save the day.

What Can I Say!!! Don't Waste Your Money!!

by quen43 on 2014-02-14Crystal Centre - Grande Prairie

Excited to here that the Backyardigans were coming to Grande Prairie. Quickly booked 4 tickets for myself, 2 and 3 year old and husband. Yayyy!!! Was really looking forward to the production as my children love the TV series. Tick tock tick tock..... Anyway, day arrives and my children are all built up for some Backyardigan fun. I put them to bed early in the afternoon to sleep for 4 hours in preparation for a riveting evening of childish fun. Quick fuel stop in Wendy's for some dinner then made our way into the show. To start with I was instantly told off by a suspicious lady staff member for daring to have milk in a baby bottle for my 1 going on 2 year old. (how dare I!) She quickly tutted at me then said when i said it was just milk. "well make sure you hide it then".. Nice start!! Why on earth would i not be allowed milk in a children's production ? Gosh there were babies there. Should they be screaming in hunger just to satisfy some safety issue. I still don't know why this is the case..... Anyway, slightly irate we purchased some rather tacky souvenirs for the kids and made our way into the hall. Oh wait, my light rod wouldn't work, back out to get a replacement. Grrrrrr. Just looking at my husbands face when i returned told me everything. He was very un-impressed. OK its a kids show, fathers are there for the kids etc but I could just tell this was not going to be a good night.. Lights went on, and trying to see the stage, I was still kind of hopeful. (more fool me) On came the characters, singing the intro we all love. On closer examination i noticed the stage costumes were very tacky looking, and even dirty. I thought this production was really cheap considering the price of the tickets. The props and set were very cardboard like , and for a stage show of this magnitude i really did expect better. The music was not really loud at all. I don't know if it was the hall itself but i feel the style of show would have suited a more intimate theatre setting. As it was, the music was not at all pleasing, and very hard to make out. The acting was ho hum mediocre. The story did not really grip and progress or involve the audience, and it was really very very boring to watch. For a children's production this was really terrible poor. My children were totally uninterested and were getting agitated as the production proceeded. I don't think my children are particularly difficult to grab their attention, i just think this production just didn't do it.. FAIL! If you cant keep kids interested, game over.. More involvement with audience would have been a start. It didn't help that the seating was such that you could hardly see the stage from the back. We had to literally hold our kids up to see. A tiered theatre would have be much more preferable. I personally think that this show would not have got its considerable audiences if it hadn't been for the popularity of the Tv show. It really didn't have to do much to sell tickets. "Backyardigans" would sell even if it was the characters singing a bunch of nursery rhymes to an unsuspecting audience. All in all it was grim. We left after 40 mins, and that was a LONG 40 mins. I was glad to get out, so were my kids, and most of all, so was my husband... (sorry husband). Forgive me!! From the amount of people who were also coming out with children, I don't believe we were alone..

fun for kids, but a little long

by slickluck on 2014-02-05Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

Went to the show this past weekend with my 2 year old. he does really enjoy backyardigans and sat well and attentive throughout. obviously he was enjoying it. I was surprised that there was an intermission and I think a lot of families were. the show was about 2 hours all told, which seemed a bit long for the little ones. I could tell the crowd was pretty restless through most of the second half. I think a show of about 45 min with no intermission would be better. But if your toddler loves backyardigans then I'm sure they will enjoy seeing them like this. A fun show, just dragged on a bit.

    Very colourful

by Monkeygirl71 on 2010-03-10Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

The show was great....very colourful and easy story to follow. The venue was great...seats were all good to see the show. My only disappointment was the length....I felt for the amount of money spent on tickets alone, the show was very short. Not to mention all the other stuff you could spend more money on. And if you didn't buy "souvenirs" early, they sold out of a lot of stuff......should have had more stock!!

The worst kids show ever!! worst show period.

by Backyardiwhat on 2009-11-28Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

This was the worst show that I have taken my 3 year old daughter to this year! She loves the Backyardigans, and would be able to sit in front of the television for hours on end watching the show if we didn't stop her. So me and my wife were really excited to hear that there was a show live that we would be able to take her to. When we got to the venue she said "I want a little snack", walking through the entire venue looking for snacks, all I was able to find was a $10 frozen cheese cake desert bar! So here we were in this no kid friendly venue with no snacks, hoping that the show would make up for it. Well boy was I wrong! Half an hour into the show I can barely keep my eyes open. Trying to keep my eyes open, I decide to see how my family was doing beside me, hoping they didn't notice how bored I was, and ruin the show for them. Much to my surprise as I look over mother and child both snoring and literally in a coma from this show. Here was a child who could not keep her eyes off of the Backyardigans and probably the biggest fan sleeping!! So if anyone that would like to spend $150 for 3 people to have a nice nap, no food, and an expensive lousy souvenir, I would recommend this show. If not, save your money and buy the DVDs, I'm sure your child will appreciate that more.

If you like professional shows, don't waste your $

by Michayne on 2009-11-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This is exactly what makes children grow up to think live theatre sucks, because it did. I have a theatre background, but didn't need it to know that the actors should not have to move out of the way of the stagehands moving props off and on stage during the show!!! This came off like a bad elementary school dress rehearsal - and I say bad because even then the stagehands generally a) try not to be seen b) would never get in the way of the performers much less mosey on and off stage wearing all brown (traditionally, stage crew wears black). There was no magic here, and few of the kids at the show we attended were actually captivated - there was more playing than paying attention - and we had decent seats too, they weren't too far from the stage to see and hear (although not being able to hear might have been a blessing over the poor quality sound and the shrieking actress playing Octavia - in her defense, she was likely trying to project a bit more just to be heard). The one saving grace in this show, and the only reason for even considering a second star - the first was given for pretty decent props - was the gentleman actor who carried the crab, and performed tremendous gymnastics - he moved like water, and was the highlight of this otherwise less than mediocre show. I would pay to see him perform, if he lost the rest of the crew!

Props were pretty cheesy, especially when you could see the prop people moving everything, but for our 23 month old daugther she didn't care as she loves Pablo.

The Backyardigans was a very enjoyable time for all. We had 3 kids in the age range of 3yrs- 5 yrs. I would say they all loved it. Even from an adults perspective, the show grabbed our attention. The constant use of music and motion kept the kids glued to their seats. The costumes and sets were simple yet eyecatching. Overall, I would not think twice about going again;which is alot more then I would say of some kids shows ,and trust me, i've seen alot of them. I would snatch up Backyardigan tickets right away .

    Watch it on TV

by georgie4 on 2009-11-06Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

The show was pretty dissappointing- For over $130 for the four of us to go (NOT including parking, snacks, etc, I expected a lot more- the sets were very ordinary and the whole production very formulamatic- taped characters voices left no leeway for humour or improvisation. There was a nice mix of new and some songs the kids recognized. I don't think we would go again. When we asked my son, he said he preferred watching it on TV. There was no attempt to engage the children in the audience with the singing or the dancing, and it was a bit on the long side for the age group. Lots of parents left early with screaming bored children, which is not a good sign.

It was a good show for children. As a grandparent, of a 7 year old, I found myself getting involved and engaged in the show. The Hamilton Place Theatre in a great venue to hold such an event.

    Backyardigans was pretty good

by Smedley on 2009-11-02Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

After being impressed by Clifford and Little Bear in previous shows, I have to admit I was disappointed in the Backyardigans presentation. I did not care for the large screens on stage; I felt like we were watching television. I felt the presentation lacked "the magic and wonder" of live theater. I thought the costumes were weak: you could see the hoops which supported the rounded bellies, and I thought they looked a little thin. Octavia's voice was shrill and difficult to listen to, and finally the Backyardigan's singing was good, but it seemed like it was all pre-recorded. I also found the stage hand's casual strutting across the stage another reminder that we really weren't under the sea... My daughter kept saying, "those aren't really the Backyardigans". The best part of the show was the Seaweed's tumbling act .

    Very entertaining show

by Kevin1 on 2009-11-02Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

My son is only 2.5years old, but he had a blast watching his favourite Backyardigans on stage. The show is 90 minutes long, with an intermission, which is perfect for toddlers.
