About

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE:

With a moniker that namechecks both The Rolling Stonesí multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones and one of the largest cult tragedies of all time, The Brian Jonestown Massacre are always ready to bring a freaky experience to the stage. They start with a psychedelic ë60s sound and inject a healthy dose of riff-based rock to get fans shaking their money makers. On favorites like ìAnemoneî, ìPishî, and ìStraight Up and Downî, the group lets it all hang out with their trippy revelry of jangly guitars, insistent beats, and reedy organs. Frontman Anton Newcombe leads audiences through this mind-blowing journey, providing both the hypnotic melodies and spacey guitar solos that have become the bandís hallmarks. In concert The Brian Jonestown Massacre manage to outshine their adventurous records by delving even deeper into their far-out vibes, and ticket buyers shouldnít miss the chance to get swept up in the bandís heady grooves any time they perform.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Leader Anton Newcombe founded The Brian Jonestown Massacre in 1990, banding together a revolving lineup of San Francisco musicians for the groupís shoegaze-inspired 1993 debut Spacegirl & Other Favorites. After some sonic retooling and a lineup turnover, the group won over fans and critics with an impressive trio of albums all released in 1996 that focused on psychedelia and R&B-driven sounds. In 2004 the band was featured in Ondi Timonerís documentary Dig!, which focused on the love-hate relationship between Newcombe and The Dandy Warholsí frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor. The remainder of the ë00s saw the group earn praise for their daring explorations of everything from electronica to avant-garde music. Since then The Brian Jonestown Massacre has revealed even more facets to their sound with albums like 2015ís orchestral Musique de Film ImaginÈ, and they continue to offer crowds a rocking, mind-expanding experience everywhere they play.

  • Music 5 stars, but overall show, a 3.

by Macco on 2025-09-17Rating: 3 out of 5

Great tunes. Solid musicians ceating their distinct layered wall of sound. It's no secret that Anton sometimes takes his time fidgeting and tuning betwen songs. That was the case on this night. It appeared the band was at the ready, always waiting for his lead. This caused the show to lose momentum. It started as an enthusiastic audience but quieted as time wore on. Anton snapping at some yappy folks in the audience didn't help. Maybe they deserved it, maybe not. But after 30+ years in the business, he's seen it all. Rather than worry about a few, how about us, the other 1400 people in the venue? There are no end of apologists for his behavior, but it's getting old. Without the delays, there would have been time to fit in 2 or 3 more of their terrific songs in the same timeframe!

  • Sublime performance

The best show of the year...by far. The band were at the height of their powers.

  • We loved them!!

by Chillermonster on 2023-09-24Rating: 5 out of 5

We loved every minute of the BJM show at the Beanfield Theatre in Montreal. Contrary to the other reviewer, we would have loved to have heard him talk a bit more. We danced, we had so much fun and we got some great pictures. It looked like they were going to do an encore but they didn’t come back out, which was a little disappointing, as we could have stayed for much longer!! We’ll go see them again, for sure.

  • Too Long!

by HemiRam on 2016-05-15The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The first hour and a half or so was great...but the last hour just seemed repetitive and boring! And Anton should stick to singing and playing...whenever he talked between songs I cringed! And his wife should stay off the stage!
