I don't know who to blame, the band or the venue, but when the main act doesn't hit the stage until close to 10:30 and the doors opened at 7(unless it's the big valley), something's not right. Murder of Crows was fine and did the job of an opening act, which was to prime the audience for the attraction. They did this, but at 9 another band came out, the emcee begged us to cheer for the Cult but then support this new act, and the crowd died. By the time they were done, almost another hour passed before the Cult appeared to play before a tired and disengaged crowd whose interest level fluctuated. The Cult sounded good and played hard, but this was strictly paint by numbers. Whenever they appeared to be losing the crowd they would play a classic from their 80s heyday and bring it back, but so much new material is a dicey proposition for a band relying on nostalgia. Two opening acts is always a bad idea, and had the Cult started at 9, the overall experience would have been much better. They started too late and ended too late and didn't do enough for the crowd to compensate.
