About

THE HOLD STEADY IN CONCERT:

Anchored by a muscular classic rock base, Brooklyn's the Hold Steady masterfully tell stories of struggle and redemption, punctuating their thoughtful compositions with sing-along choruses and wailing organ playing. At their live shows, the band's boot-stomping heartland piano rock runs the full gamut of emotions, as frontman Craig Finn leads fans through the band's  catalog of narrative-based songs and poetry. With their newest album Teeth Dreams due out in 2014, fans can expect more fantastic performances from the band as they hit the road for an international tour in support of the release.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After a 2003 viewing of The Band's seminal concert documentary The Last Waltz, Brooklyn musicians Craig Finn and Tad Kubler were inspired to create a group that would revive and update heartland rock. They immediately formed the Hold Steady, releasing their full-length debut Almost Killed Me the following year to a substantial amount of critical buzz. Since then, the band's no-frills approach to narrative-based rock has gained them a cult following, propelling several of their albums to chart in both the US and UK. In support of the 2014 release of their sixth studio album Teeth Dreams, the band will treat fans to another rousing string of shows as they hit the road for an international tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Really tight show with a whole different feel for THS as this was the first time I saw them with no keyboard player. Great selection of songs from new album and some nice older tunes as well."

"I couldn't believe The Hold Steady was gonna play such an awesome small venue. I was a little nervous the show would suck because of the small room but nonetheless the venue was amazing as was the sound and the band."

"The Hold Steady blew me away Thursday night. The 3 guitar attack is amazing. Finn enjoys the hell out of himself on stage and they had my attention for the entire 2 hours they played. Best show I've seen in a few years."

The Hold Steady rocked it out!

by meagna on 2009-09-25Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

This concert was certainly memorable - intimate venue, great sound, audience on their feet and the band totally rocked it out! The lead singer was working some quirky dance moves that could have gone off wrong, but they only added to his charm. Booze was flowing, spit was flying and everyone had a good 'ol time. Very much a rock 'n roll band!

This was a nice intimate show at the refurbished West End Cultural Centre, the perfect venue to get hot and sweaty to some excellent tunes by The Hold Steady.

    The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady's show at the Odeon was excellent last night. The encore was the best part of the night with Stuck Between Stations and Chip Ahoy. We drove from Regina for the show, and we were very happy we made the trip!

    Good gig, bad venue.

by MusicGeek on 2009-09-24The Odeon Events Centre - Saskatoon

Craig Finn is both cheesy and likeable. His stage presence amounts to acting like a 15 year old boy rocking out in front of his mirror, punching the sky, and hamming it up, mugging for the crowd. As scholcky as that can get, it is also fun --- he brings the show and the energy. It's probably not a great deal of fun to play Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on a Wednesday night, and Finn made it look fun. Which makes it fun for the crowd. I could swear there were a bunch of songs I waited for and never heard. The venue sucks though. The sound is terrible and the stage is too low, making it harder to see from the back.

The Hold Steady at Starlite Room.

by MKulpa on 2009-09-22The Starlite Room - Edmonton

The opener was fair, Still Life Still, a little repetitive but I suspect that their album stuff is quite a bit better than their live stuff. They seem to be newer to performing but once they get it down they'll have a great show to offer. The hold Steady started at 10:15 and went hard until 12:10 stopping for a brief break near the end. Craig did spend a bit of the show talking with the crowd and songs often led into the next without dead air. They played at least 5 new songs, one of which they claim to have debuted that show. The songs were all different than the albums but still recognizable. The show ended with some moonlight tracks but eventually ramped up and left everyone with a high. The crowd was totally hyped. If you are in to the Hold Steady and they're coming within a three hour drive of where you are, you'd do well to buy some tickets and go see them. You might be disappointed though if you were hoping for merch because they didn't have a lot, and what they did have sold out fast.

    Hold Steady, Holdin' Steady...

by Laughingcleansthesoul on 2009-09-20Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Absolutely amazing show. I have never seen such a high energy show at the Vogue in my life. I sat in the second row of the dress circle, so I had an amazing view of the people on the floor thrashing and dancing and singing, crowded up close to the stage. This energy was so contagious that even some of us in the balcony couldn't help but dance. The band played many old songs as well as many off of their new album. I would suggest that anyone who likes their stuff, try to see a live show. The Hold Steady knows how a rock show should feel.

Didn't know what to expect and was blown away by the energy. Craig Finn et al were at the top of their 'bar band' game. Great experience.
