About

THE HOLD STEADY IN CONCERT:

Anchored by a muscular classic rock base, Brooklyn's the Hold Steady masterfully tell stories of struggle and redemption, punctuating their thoughtful compositions with sing-along choruses and wailing organ playing. At their live shows, the band's boot-stomping heartland piano rock runs the full gamut of emotions, as frontman Craig Finn leads fans through the band's  catalog of narrative-based songs and poetry. With their newest album Teeth Dreams due out in 2014, fans can expect more fantastic performances from the band as they hit the road for an international tour in support of the release.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After a 2003 viewing of The Band's seminal concert documentary The Last Waltz, Brooklyn musicians Craig Finn and Tad Kubler were inspired to create a group that would revive and update heartland rock. They immediately formed the Hold Steady, releasing their full-length debut Almost Killed Me the following year to a substantial amount of critical buzz. Since then, the band's no-frills approach to narrative-based rock has gained them a cult following, propelling several of their albums to chart in both the US and UK. In support of the 2014 release of their sixth studio album Teeth Dreams, the band will treat fans to another rousing string of shows as they hit the road for an international tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Really tight show with a whole different feel for THS as this was the first time I saw them with no keyboard player. Great selection of songs from new album and some nice older tunes as well."

"I couldn't believe The Hold Steady was gonna play such an awesome small venue. I was a little nervous the show would suck because of the small room but nonetheless the venue was amazing as was the sound and the band."

"The Hold Steady blew me away Thursday night. The 3 guitar attack is amazing. Finn enjoys the hell out of himself on stage and they had my attention for the entire 2 hours they played. Best show I've seen in a few years."

  • The Hold Steady was great!

I went to Sled Island to see the Hold Steady. We sat for 5 and 1/2 hours in the rain waiting for them. They played to the biggest and an enthusiastic audience that that evening saw because it rained constantly. Craig Finn reminded me of a young Elvis Costello for his frenetic energy. What shone was the poetry of the lyrics and the tight instrumental accompaniment. It was my treat to see the band in Calgary and to hear so many songs that I knew and enjoyed from Stay Positive.

  • It was a Party Pit

I've always heard the Hold Steady put on a phenomenal show and I wasn't disappointed. Craig Finn is a mad man and he looked like he was genuinely having a lot of fun. Tad and Steve are amazing guitar players with beautiful guitar tones. The whole night was a crazy party with the crowd cheering and singing along to every song. Can't wait to see them again.

Despite technical difficulties, The Whigs put on a great show. The Hold Steady was excellent - set list was good, wished for more....(Stay Positive, Sapphire?) Good mix of old and new tunes. Lots of energy & really loud! Never been to the Phoenix before, not a bad venue, cooler than expected - but too many tall people!! Definitely want to see them again. Maybe outside festival atmosphere...

  • Hold Steady stunk

by moonman on 2009-10-11The Odeon Events Centre - SaskatoonRating: 2 out of 5

I was so looking forward to this concert. We got to the venue around 9:30 and they had already started (which was an unpleasant surprise, but better than the acts that don't come on until after Cinderelly has gone home). I expected the show to be sold out. Nope. I expected the crowd to be feverishly in to it. Passably. I expected the sound to be acceptable. Barely. In short, one of the more disppointing live shows that I have seen from a band that has a great reputation for putting on a show. Weird. And too bad.

  • The Hold Steady put on a show

by kellx on 2009-09-28Lee's Palace - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The Hold Steady has a style of music that is not for everyone but even if you are not a fan Craig Finn is so entertaining the whole performance, you can't help but love the band.

  • mushy sound quality

by entropy on 2009-09-28Lee's Palace - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

I love the Hold Steady and saw at the Horseshoe. There wasn't the same connection with the audience this time. The crowd wanted to be into it, but the energy was a little flat and the sound quality was really mushy. Sometimes it would take a minute before you could tell what the song was. It felt like the band was a little bored.

  • Hold Steady Held it down!

Awesome show, my first time seeing this incredible band. They were everything I've read about and more. Can't wait to see them again.

  • Hold Steady in their element at Lee's Palace

by ChipsAhoy on 2009-09-27Lee's Palace - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

One of the most incredible bands to see in a small club delivers once again at Lee's Palace, Toronto. In front of a completely packed venue the Hold Steady captivated their audience delivering singalong after singalong at an event that felt more like a party than a concert. It is so rare and refreshing to see a band have at least as much fun as it's audience. The result is an unforgettable and inspiring night of rock and roll.
