THE PROCLAIMERS IN CONCERT:

Celtic rock duo The Proclaimers has been charming audiences around the world with their sunny Scottish accents and jangly pop tunes for the past three decades. Stateside fans first caught wind of twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid when their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" reached No. 3 in the US after appearing in the hit 1993 film Benny & Joon, and they've had a devoted following ever since thanks to their unique Scottish rock sound and rousing live shows. In concert the brothers are all smiles and upbeat energy, leading fans through sing-alongs of favorites like "Sunshine on Leith" and "I'm on My Way" while their backing band kicks out a pub-ready brew of organ, fiddle, and drums. But the highlight of every show is the anthemic and celebratory "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", one of the most insanely fun songs ever written and a serious party starter no matter the venue.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Leith, Scotland-born Craig and Charlie Reid cut their teeth playing in punk bands in high school before forming The Proclaimers in 1983. They got a boost a few years later when a fan sent their demo to British indie rock group The Housemartins, who were so impressed that they invited the brothers on their 1986 UK tour. The exposure set the stage for The Proclaimers 1987 debut album This Is the Story, which went gold thanks to Top 3 single "Letter from America". Their 1988 sophomore album Sunshine on Leith was an even bigger success, cracking the Top 10 in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand on the strength of ubiquitous 1988 mega-hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)". The song initially failed to chart in America, but that wasn't the final word—it became a Top 3 hit in the US five years later when it was featured on the soundtrack of the Jonny Depp-starring feature film Benny & Joon. Since then The Proclaimers have toured extensively while maintaining a steady output, including a 2007 comedy version of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" which was recorded for charity and ended up topping the UK Singles Chart.

Hearing The Proclaimers' music is great, hearing them in concert energizing, and Better! Great Opening act as well, have a feeling that Siobhan could really belt out a rocker song!

    No interaction with audience

by Momofajj on 2018-09-17River Cree Resort & Casino - Enoch

The Proclaimers basically just stood and sang. No interaction with the audience. Music was very loud. They seemed to have no personality and little enjoyment for performing.

    The Proclaimers lacked enthusiasm!

by Arlen on 2018-09-17River Cree Resort & Casino - Enoch

I was so disappointed with the Proclaimers. Although the music was easy to listen to, watching them was really hard. No one in the band smiled, there was no commaradarie, no banter, not even a "Hello, River Cree". The warm up act, Siobh, a single woman, had more personality in her little finger. Even when they played "500 Miles" and the crowd rushed the stage, no one in the band responded. We go to a concert to be entertained, not just hear the music. The Proclaimers really need to pick it up.

    Proclaimers were amazing

by Donsol52 on 2018-09-16River Cree Resort & Casino - Enoch

I had family visiting from Scotland and saw the event online. We all loved the show. The Proclaimers are fabulous and the smaller venue made it even better to be closer to the stage and having the bar in the room was nice too. Great time!!

Another brilliant performance from the boys. Wish they had played a little longer though. Looking forward to seeing them in another couple of years, hopefully.

    The Fog

by MarathonMartin on 2016-10-12Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

It was a snowy Saturday night as the four of us headed out from Cochrane to see The Proclaimers, one of my favourite bands. In 2010 I ran 250 marathons and raised $320,000 for the children's charity Right To Play and "I'm Gonna be (500 miles)" was my theme song. Ten minutes into the drive, I had to turn around. The fog was like a "Pea Souper". I couldn't see more than 50 feet in front of me and with the icey conditions it just wasn't worth the risk. I was gutted. So I went home, had a beer and listened to Sunshine on Leith. Brilliant!

    Proclaimers

by Shantzyboy on 2016-10-06Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

The Proclaimers were a great act even though the music level was too loud. The lead act of Jenny O was terrible. I would never go to see her again.

The Proclaimers put on a good show

by Jneaner16 on 2016-10-06Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

As I only knew their 2 most popular songs and don't follow them at all, I had no idea what to expect from their show. For me, it started off a bit slow (I expected all lively songs) but it got livelier as the show progressed. Regardless, their voices and performance were great the entire way through. I somehow thought they would interact with the audience more and that they would be funny (I don't know why as I know nothing about them) but they were there to sing. I enjoyed the show and absolutely loved it when the crowd got to their feet and sang to the 2 famous songs. I would recommend it. No disappointment for me

    Poor sound quality

by CottageLover on 2016-10-06Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

I'm not sure if they were propmoting a new album but the majority of the music was unfamiliar. The last 5 songs were their known songs. The sound wasn't very good. Very difficult to understand both their singing and their minimal conversation, would have appreciated more dialogue, they really said nothing. Could not understand the opening act either and she didn't even say who she was.

Acoustics matter a lot at the Burt

by AdamT on 2016-10-06Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

The Proclaimers were great. Their band was great. But the sound mixing / acoustic tuning left a lot to be desired: the only people who got decent sound were near the middle of the theatre on the main floor. Over at the far left edge of row 10, the drummer was louder than the singers, and the vocals were very muddy.

The Proclaimers delivered a great performance

by Rabbie on 2013-08-27Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

What another top notch performance by The Proclaimers and the band were on their game as well, especially the keyboard player! They gave a good mix of new material as well as their old familiar songs and the crowd lapped it up. Hopefully, they will come back.

    Outstanding!

by Highlandshortie on 2013-08-27Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

I have waited 3 and a half years for the boys to do a show in Calgary and I was not disappointed. They still have the same enthusiasm as they did the very first time I saw them back in Inverness Scotland in 87 or 88 I don't remember - age! Their new material is as equally good as their older stuff and I hope they continue to play here for many years to come, as I will definitely be there. I have seen them as I said all the way from Inverness to the Apollo in London and possibly everywhere in between and although this was a smaller venue, the show certainly wasn't lacking.
