About

THE RENTALS IN CONCERT:

The Rentals, the beloved power pop project of former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp, thrilled fans in 2014 with the release of Lost in Alphaville -- their first studio album in more than 15 years. While Weezer graduated from alt-rock underdog to mainstream megaband long ago, The Rentals have retained their outsider appeal over the years, and their live shows are a welcome throwback to the grungy, offbeat charm of '90s alternative music. Sharp's deadpan vocals are as clever and insightful as ever on songs like "Thought of Sound", and the band's signature buzzing synths and female backing vocals remain a unique addition that sets their feel-good sound apart. Fans of alt-rock's heyday won't want to miss The Rentals as they perform breakout '90s hits like "Friends of P." and "Waiting" alongside cuts from the new album at their upcoming shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

In 1995 Weezer's then-bassist Matt Sharp formed The Rentals. Sharp and a rotating lineup of players recorded the band's debut album The Return of the Rentals that same year, scoring a breakout hit when the record's first single "Friends of P." peaked at No. 7 on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart and entered heavy rotation on MTV. The album's success led to tours with big-name acts like Alanis Morissette and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and in 1997 Sharp began work on a second Rentals album. He left Weezer in 1998, and the following year he released The Rentals sophomore album Seven More Minutes. The album failed to attract the same attention as their debut, and Sharp put the project on hiatus later that year. He brought back The Rentals in 2005, celebrating the project's 10-year anniversary with a North American tour. Following several self-released EPs in the late '00s, The Rentals made their proper return in 2014 with their third studio album Lost in Alphaville. The record was a hit with longtime fans of both The Rentals and Weezer, setting the stage for extensive touring and marking the beginning of a triumphant new chapter for the band.
