    Stunning design

    by Mark on 2024-04-06

Although the performers were all excellent (their movements sometimes reminded me of Pina Bausch's dance troop in their prime) this really is Lepage's show. It's so distinctive: the spare but powerful lighting effects; the well-chosen props that never clutter but stand in distinct relief. And probably the most expressive use of curtains that I have ever seen. A white burial shroud becomes -with a simple spotlight and some wires- a billowing fog that transforms figures into sinister silhouettes; and, most memorably, a simple blue curtain that suddenly grabs a hold of Ophelia, tosses and turns her until she drowns, then finally it swallows her whole and tosses her corpse down onto the stage floor. The sudden savage beauty of this scene absolutely silenced the audience. Congratulations to everyone involved. Let's hope there's a film version!!

    A bit disappointing

by KC on 2024-04-06Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

The ballet parts were lovely but a bit too traditional and seemed somewhat disjointed from the Lepage set pieces. The opening dance, Ophelia and King's death scenes, the ribbon dancing duel and others were great but there was no flow - like two shows stuck together and something lacking overall.

    Bravo Hamlet!

by NG on 2024-04-06Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Just a brief message to say how much my wife and I enjoyed the performance of Hamlet this past Wednesday in Toronto. The choreography, individual performances, storytelling, musical score and staging were extraordinary. I was particularly struck by the frequent use of lighting and fabric—including the curtains(!)—to create larger-than-life experiences with simple props. The drowning of Ophelia was mesmerizing to behold, as was the sword duel between Hamlet and Laertes. I could watch this again (and again) and would have done so if other commitments didn’t prevent it. I do hope there will be more stagings in the near future. Congratulations to everyone involved in this triumphant production. Thank you.
