TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS IN CONCERT:
As pioneers of heartland rock in the late-'70s, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers championed a no-frills, guitar-driven sound that set them apart from the increasingly technology-oriented approach of much of the era's pop music. Today Tom Petty & Co. are as relatable as ever, treating fans to their classic songs about working class issues and everyday American life with a passion and flair that belie their years. Whether Petty is dancing across the stage with a pair of maracas or lending his iconic voice to hits like "American Girl" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," he and the band never fail to electrify at their live shows, and their 2014 tour dates with special guest Steve Winwood will be no different.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
After playing in several other Gainesville, FL bands in the early-'70s, Tom Petty formed the Heartbreakers in 1976. The band's self-titled debut initially failed to gain traction in the US, but American audiences eventually caught wind of its popularity in the UK, leading to the 1978 re-release of early single "Breakdown" to a Top 40 spot. In 1979 the band scored their true US breakthrough with the hits "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That," That", the latter becoming their first Top 10 hit. A series of successful albums followed in the '80s, earning the band an impressive string of hits as well as a supporting slot on Bob Dylan's '86/87 True Confessions world tour. Their chart run continued in the '90s with No. 1's like "Learning to Fly" and "You Don't Know How It Feels", which earned Petty a Grammy in 1996 for Best Rock Vocal Performance. Nearly four decades after their debut, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will continue to treat fans to their exceptional live show on their latest tour.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"A great walk down memory lane. The Heartbreakers played like they were all still 30 years old. Tom Petty can really belt those songs out. Rock on!"
"The show was awesome. Tom Petty was amazing and the Heartbreakers rocked! I would love to see the whole show again!"
"The show was excellent with a great mix of old, new, and some obscure/rarely heard tracks. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers never disappoint."
The Joe Cocker and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concert was absolutely fantastic! I scored floor seats and only sat down between acts.
The music was amazing, the light show was so well planned and drew you into the experience, the crowd was having a blast. What more could you ask for? Oh, cheaper beer!!
Joe Cocker was awesome and sounds like he hasn't aged at all. Tom Petty's classics were great but a little too much of the new stuff was played. Sadly I ended up leaving early because the smoke in the building was so intense I couldn't breathe.
The opening act was Joe Cocker, joe was great - played the favorites and was engaging. Tom Petty was surprisingly mellow and stuck mostly to his new Album, which may be good, but does not compare to his older stuff.
Tom petty was absolutly amazing. I have never been to a concert where everyone was so completely compelled to sing along to all the songs and actually knew the words! It was such a magical feeling to be in his presence
This was my first opportunity to see Tom Petty after being a fan for over twenty years. I have had friends claim that Tom Petty puts on a great show, so I was very optimistic when the lights dimmed. What I had not expected was the charisma that Mr. Petty displays on the stage. He possesses the rare talent of being able to make small movements and gestures that connect with the crowd. In several instances, he would pause, extend his arms out from his shoulders and drop them in time with the drummer - the crowd cheered! Not many performers in my experience can evoke that reaction. The musicianship of the band was excellent and it left me wondering why I had waited so long to see them!! Memorable.
He was a pure gentleman and a gracious visitor. He still has it and the Heartbreakers were just as amazing. The Light show was spectacluar and his vocals could have been a little louder at some points...but wait...that is because the audience was singing to EVERY SONG from the past. His new tunes off MOJO appear to be upcoming hits..it was solid and bang on. A great performer and an awesome stage presence.
Joe Cocker was incredible. To have his energy at that age I can only hope. Petty is a showman and a gentleman. The place was rocking! Everybody standin'! Beautiful day in Vancouver the best place on earth! A FANTASTIC Concert. 4 hours of just great memories. Thankyou Tom and the Heartbreakers made my year.
Absolutely amazing. Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers still have it. They really know how to rock a crowd.
After having attended the Eagles at GM Place, I was worried that Tom Petty would be a no fun environment as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see the crowd up and dancing throughout the entire show. It's nice to see musicians truly love what they're doing as opposed to needing to make some cash. Playing old and new songs, this was a fantastic show.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are a fantastic band who have stayed the same over the years. Having seen them in the past ( 20+years ago) I was not to sure what to expect, they did not disappoint. I was surprised at the age range of the crowd- young to older, not what i expected. This is proof that Tom Petty appeals to a broad range of listener ( or that a whole wack of parents have been playing good tunes to their kids all these years). The sets were good and the sound excellent, overall a great show.
Wow, . .So impressed with both Joe Cocker and Tom Petty. Was an awsome show. If your a fan you will love the show...OLD SCHOOL...It was so cool..GM Place audience, was on their feet singing away.... Great night of music!!
Sorry, can't talk, I'm still singing!! Possibly the best concert I have ever seen and heard!!
& everytime he & his crack band are nothing short of stunning. I believe they are the best R & R band working today. Just listen to them play old blues numbers live & you'll know what i mean. Can't recommend a nite with TP & the HB's enough. Cheers !
Think about the best day in your life and multiply it by 100...
Tom Petty knew how to keep the crowd on their feet and how to speed up and slow down... familiar not so familiar.. excellent job! I had floor seats.. pretty close to the front and when I turned around... I couldn't believe the stands were even on their feet, first time I'd seen that... for an entire performance...
Always coming up with something new and always looking to benefit his fans, Tom Petty has come through for us yet again!
Awesome idea, petty comes to the table again. Great tracks from a band that doesn't over do the live album thing. loved the comentary, and background to the tours. awesome idea, can't wait to see them on the road in 2010
