TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS IN CONCERT:

As pioneers of heartland rock in the late-'70s, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers championed a no-frills, guitar-driven sound that set them apart from the increasingly technology-oriented approach of much of the era's pop music. Today Tom Petty & Co. are as relatable as ever, treating fans to their classic songs about working class issues and everyday American life with a passion and flair that belie their years. Whether Petty is dancing across the stage with a pair of maracas or lending his iconic voice to hits like "American Girl" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," he and the band never fail to electrify at their live shows, and their 2014 tour dates with special guest Steve Winwood will be no different.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After playing in several other Gainesville, FL bands in the early-'70s, Tom Petty formed the Heartbreakers in 1976. The band's self-titled debut initially failed to gain traction in the US, but American audiences eventually caught wind of its popularity in the UK, leading to the 1978 re-release of early single "Breakdown" to a Top 40 spot. In 1979 the band scored their true US breakthrough with the hits "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That," That", the latter becoming their first Top 10 hit. A series of successful albums followed in the '80s, earning the band an impressive string of hits as well as a supporting slot on Bob Dylan's '86/87 True Confessions world tour. Their chart run continued in the '90s with No. 1's like "Learning to Fly" and "You Don't Know How It Feels", which earned Petty a Grammy in 1996 for Best Rock Vocal Performance. Nearly four decades after their debut, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will continue to treat fans to their exceptional live show on their latest tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"A great walk down memory lane. The Heartbreakers played like they were all still 30 years old. Tom Petty can really belt those songs out. Rock on!"

"The show was awesome. Tom Petty was amazing and the Heartbreakers rocked! I would love to see the whole show again!"

"The show was excellent with a great mix of old, new, and some obscure/rarely heard tracks. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers never disappoint."

    overpriced petty show

by chargedtoomuchforpetty on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Tom put on a decent show last night in Vancouver. But with a combined price of $315.00 for a pair of tickets it was pretty hard to feel great about the concert. Some excellent versions of tunes such as refugee, but Tom and the band were a little to jammy for my taste and didn't rock out that much. No "The Waiting", no "American Girl." I wont return at these prices.

    Needs to raise the stage

by Camelot on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

I had row 28 seats on the floor. The stage seemed to be too low to be able to see anything. He had great video screens but I wanted to see the band. We ended up leaving early since we couldn't see what was going on , on stage. I have been to 70 concerts and this is the only one where you couldn't see the stage from floor seats. I know the Vancouver Province gave the show an 'A" review but they must have had seats where you could see the stage. On top of that, people were wearing hats blocking out even more of our view. Been there, done that, didn't buy the T-shirt. Disappointed with the stage configuration.

    Tom & The Heartbreakers ROCK!

by Angela801 on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Okay........Joe Cocker............some songs were great but really..."Love Lift Us Up Where we Belong"..........Did anyone advise them on the set list? I am a huge Tom Petty fan and although they were very good, I have seen them in a smaller venue and much prefer that. They have so much material to select from and the 150 minutes that they played flew by. I had hoped they would play Saving Grace......and more from that CD, but they had a lot of new material to cover, which was very very good........ Tight band, great rockers, and Tom Petty is the consumate performer, he loves what he does and he appears to genuinely appreciate the audience. Great show overall.

    oldies but goodies

by fezzy on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

I already forgot who opened for Tom Petty lastnight, it wasn't very memorable.. but when Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers hit the stage, the arena exploded. it was an unreal feeling, and it lasted through the entire set. I didn't think they'd rock as hard as they did, I thought it might be kinda slow, but they sure showed me, those guys played hard and fast, and it was just excellent.

My heart was going thump-a-thump !!

by Ettajane on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

The concert was awesome. Tom is a fine entertainer and I was delighted to be there. Sometimes I felt that the music was a little too loud compared to his vocals and I could not hear his words. His sound man should have been on top of that. The venue was well organized and the staff and security were very well trained and in charge of the crowd. There were no rowdys and everyone was singing and very happy. Tom has a way of reaching out to the very heart and soul of his audience and I felt the warmth of his love for us all. He asked the lighting man to turn up the lights so that he could see all of us. What a nice thing to do, He greeted us all with a big smile. Tom Petty is a gentleman and a wonderful person. Fabulous evening. Wonderful concert. The best concert that I have been to in my life.

The Heartbreakers are a tight band, each having their own musical talent that is wonderous! I had a great time last night, singing along with the rest of the crowd! Pure Joy! Hey, Joe Cocker was pretty damn good too! Rock on Tom, and you got my MOJO working! Love ya! From a baby boomer fan!

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers kick it old school

by standinginline on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Fantastic for those of us in the audience who like to see musicians instead of gimmicks and lip synching! Mike Campbell showed us how the pro's play while Tom Petty and his band sent us down a fabulous journey of rocking classics and great new tunes! The band was tight and we all had a great time together rocking the night away!

    Solid

by MReebs on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

As usual and as expected. Not as good as Pemberton. He peaked way too early and played his hits right away, I was hoping for them to be spread throughout.

    One hell of a show!

by MikeInWhiteSatin on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

This band is extremely tight and you can just see the enjoyment in them as they play this great music. Petty's voice is as strong as ever and delivered the goods on every song in the original key. Incredible eye candy for the guitar and gear nuts out there. Perfect video and light show accompaniment.

    Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

by NancyS on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

It was my 10th Tom Petty concert and he is better than ever. My only disappointment was that even though we were in the third row, Tom Petty only came to the left side of the stage twice. He seemed to play to the right side of the stage so we saw very little of him.

    one other thing...

by dmdp on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

His ability to sing and hit the high notes still sound like it did in his early days. A milestone in itself :)

    Tom Petty...

by teddybear on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

The actual singing was awesome, the crowd agreed, however, there was some disapointment in my opinion and my friend's as well! There was no background show. Every other concert I have been to you can see some sort of story that goes with the song or sometimes the band when they were younger, etc. There was nothing like that. There was no light show, pyrotechnics or other. There was a bit of laser beams (wow!) and minimal lights. Oh, and getting back to the screen(s), you really couldn't even see the band members sing while looking at the screens, because you really could not see the screens as the speakers were blocking much of the view. The sound is usually good at General Motors Place in Vancouver, however, last night it really wasn't. It must have been due to the band's equipment. You could also hear feedback here and there. They did play a lot of the new stuff and the crowd was not too into that. The old stuff was great, but they missed a few key songs. I did in the end give the concert a 4 out of 5. I probably would have given it a 3.5 if that option was available. I do wish Tom still had his signature hair colour, as he had it more of a light brown.

I want my 100 bucks back tom petty!

by starrskey on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

I paid 100 dollars for upper bowl seats that were right next to the stage. Maybe that was my first mistake but if i had known about all the feedback from petty's mic, the fact that you couldn't understand a word coming out of his mouth and other sound problems, i can confidently say that i would have rather stayed at home. I also found the setlist weak at best.

Petty's dance moves better than Michael Jackson

by dmdp on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Like a rickety old ladder, Petty is still standing strong as one of the best. He's been a favourite of mine for years and last night capped it off. No need for all the bells and whistles, just good old rock n' roll is where he keeps it. I'm a teacher and saw many of my students at GM Place in Vancouver and I think they loved the show more than I... good on ya T.P. and the boys. The opening act with Joe Cocker was equally as much fun to watch and listen to... good on ya J.C. and the girls and boys. dmdp

    Petty owns gm place

by hino on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Tom Petty was a rockstar, fantastic show, too many new songs though, would of been a 5 star show if he played less Mojo and more classics, although a couple of the new ones were pretty good. There was a huge age range, many young people and many of us old farts and many beer...and the warm smell of colitas rising up through the air

    Tom Petty Rocks!

by Wheelio on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Tom Petty rocked GM Place last night with a lot of his old classics....tried and true the audience knew all the words and sang along with him...he delivered...he gave us what we came for and his band the Heartbreakers were outstanding. This was a great Rock'nRoll show and my 13 year old loved it! History in the making, we would go again!

I thought Tom Petty may have scaled back to a more acoustic set, I thought dead wrong. His new songs have new guitar riffs to drool for. He rocked GM Place for hours and had all of us on our feet dancing and singing along. We didn't need any encouragement from Tom to sing along as the audience took the concert in their own hands. Tommy's humbleness equals that of all the bling in the world that hangs around this generations interpretation of what makes a musician. Thank goodness the crowd was full of a young generation to match the older folks. There is hope.

    Joe Cocker was amazing

by rosemary2 on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

He can still rock and knows exactly what the audience wants to hear, had us hooked right from the beginning. Tom Petty not so much. His overall demeaner was strange, his music was overly loud for his voice, and we could not hear what he was singing on several occasions. To much psychdelic guitar jamming. Not enough old hits. As he played new stuff, over and over, the crowd was getting quieter and quieter, the response less enthusiastic. Before there encore, I looked around from the 300 section of GM Place and saw a lot of empty seats which told it's own tale. He started rocking again at the end, the crowd responded, but I think a bit of the excitement was missing. Overall not good.

Thank You Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!

by rixrix on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

The concert last night was unbelievably great. They played mostly old hits, with the couple of previously released new songs from Mojo. The entire crowd (even the seats!) stood and grooved during the whole thing. It was a trip back to childhood, listing to Full Moon Fever on one of those old 6 CD changer machines with giant terrible sounding speakers. Thanks guys for the great show. Joe Cocker was really great as well, especially the beautiful cover. Guy's got the chops!
