About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Unearthly Talent!!!

    by R & T on 2025-03-29Thunder Bay Community Auditorium - Thunder BayRating: 5 out of 5

Our 3rd Tommy Emmanuel concert and he’s even more amazing than ever. I don’t know if there is an equal to him in the earthly realm. He plays so much music all at once on one guitar with - well face it - with his whole body and soul, and can pivot from breathtaking speed and energy to sheer beauty and elegance. While performing all of this, he is humble and down-to-earth, and he seems to experience total enjoyment performing as much as we enjoy total enjoyment in his audience. Thank you so much, Tommy!!!

To see and experience such an amazing talent “live” was an awesome evening of which we’ll remember always—Tommy Emmanuel one of the worlds best.

Tommy always give his performances everything he has and his concerts will leave you speechless! You won't get a better bang for your buck and as he himself said the acoustics at the venue are great! I hope he keeps coming back to Lac Leamy ...it was my third time seeing him and hopefully there will be many more! It is an easy place to get in and out of and lots of parking. Make sure you see this guitar virtuoso if you can it is an unforgettable experience!

  • Another fabulous Tommy Emmanuel concert!

This guy is amazing. How does one guy produce so much music? I think Tommy is one of the best solo guitarists on the planet. We see him every time he comes and I wish he played more concerts in Eastern Canada. The Casino in Gatineau is a nice venue but I think he could fill the NAC. I can't remember when a performer got 3 standing ovations DURING their concert!

It's as if the man is divinely entwined with the guitar. A wild bucking spirit trying fiercely to escape through the strings...sweet heaven on earth.

  • Tommy Emmanuel - one of the best!

by CNConductor on 2013-05-24Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was just under 3 hours of incredible music. The unique style puts him in a class of his own. I've heard some of the other 'greats' over the years but they all had limits on how they played - Tommy expands the limits an who knows where it will stop. Thanks for a great night of entertainment.

  • Beyond amazing

There's absolutely nothing negative about performance. He was very friendly / funny and had a good sence of humor... Most of all he is the best fingerstyle guitarist that I have ever seen. Highly recommend whatching the show if he is in your area 10/10

  • Tommy Emmanuel: Best guitar player I've ever seen

by Robbo24 on 2013-05-24Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

While not known to as many people that should know him. Tommy Emmanuel pushes the art of playing the guitar to ever new highs. His performance here in Toronto, was to say very least, amazing. How one man with a guitar can produce so much music boggles my mind. (And I think I know how to make music with guitar) Tommy simply takes it to another level.

  • Tommy Emmanuel....a stellar evening!!

by Limerick on 2013-05-24Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Hello...I actually bought the tickets as a gift...one went to my brother, Dave, an excellent guitarist himself...so here is his review: Just a quick note to say thank you for the ticket to the Tommy Emannuel concert last night, which was excellent! I have seen him many times on Youtube, but it is not the same as a live performance, where you can here his Australian accent as he is talking. He also did a little workshop, explain some of his technique etc. so really adds to the ‘live’ experience

  • I'm Still Killing Myself

by Kalista on 2012-06-20George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I've waited for 3 years for Tommy to come to Canada. I got so busy with a new job, when I went to check the time of the concert, it had happened 2 days before. I missed it. I have to go on his site to see when he might be coming again. However, I have no doubt that, had I made it there, I would have been amazed. Talent on the guitar? Well, anyone that might be reading this is well aware; from ballads, to classical, to the Sanitarium Shuffle. And his showmanship is right up there to. He engages and just plain has fun with his audience. You might not be able to sense my disappointment, but it's there, and it runs deep. I'll go through 3 boxes of sticky notes to remind myself the next time. Please tell me there will be a next time. Very Sad Fan

This is possibly the best concert I've ever been to! A guitarist's guitarist. A composer's composer. A coverer's coverer.

Tommy was everything you could wish for; stellar chops, wonderful stage prescence, joie de vivre, a great audience connection.

I've been waiting for years to see tommy live so were the friends I invited to the event. It was everything we hope for and more. For any one who's a guitarist this is a must see. Tommy is amazing. My favorite song of the night was "THE TRAILS". I just wish I could of got seats up front were we could of tried to watch dem fingers flying.
