About

Tommy Emmanuel on Tour

Anytime you talk to any of Tommy Emmanuel's fans, whether musicians or civilians, invariably they will speak of not one but two qualities that define his greatness. The first, predictably, is his extraordinary guitar playing. Considered by those in the know to be among this planet's greatest guitarists, his playing is simply miraculous, as it would take three musicians, or more, to do what Tommy does solo. Who else, for example, when playing "Day Tripper," can lay down the rhythm part, dig into the riff and sing the melody all at once on just one acoustic guitar?

Which brings us to the other aspect of his music always mentioned, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing: the joy. Yes, joy. Because it's one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile of the ages, that evidence of authentic, unbridled delight, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does. "The joy, he says, "is there always because I'm chasing it through music. Seeing the surprise in peoples' eyes is worth living and working for... I can't help but play to the people with all my heart, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I've worked all my life for. And here it is!"

Although his expression is instrumental, he comes to the guitar much more like a vocalist, positively singing melodies through the strings. He inhabits the tunes he performs, delivering every nuance and turn of phrase. His own songs are also illuminated always with lyrical melodies that go right to the heart, such as his beautiful ode to his daughter, "Angelina," or his great "story without words," "Lewis & Clark." That they resonate so deeply without words makes sense, as words only go so far. But music, coming from a genuine and joyful source, can go so much farther. Now with The Best of Tommy songs, he brings us a complete collection of his own songs, all rich with ripe melodicism and rendered with joy in real-time.

Tommy Emmanuel: Best guitar player I've ever seen

by Robbo24 on 2013-05-24Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - Toronto

While not known to as many people that should know him. Tommy Emmanuel pushes the art of playing the guitar to ever new highs. His performance here in Toronto, was to say very least, amazing. How one man with a guitar can produce so much music boggles my mind. (And I think I know how to make music with guitar) Tommy simply takes it to another level.

    Tommy Emmanuel....a stellar evening!!

by Limerick on 2013-05-24Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - Toronto

Hello...I actually bought the tickets as a gift...one went to my brother, Dave, an excellent guitarist himself...so here is his review: Just a quick note to say thank you for the ticket to the Tommy Emannuel concert last night, which was excellent! I have seen him many times on Youtube, but it is not the same as a live performance, where you can here his Australian accent as he is talking. He also did a little workshop, explain some of his technique etc. so really adds to the ‘live’ experience

    I'm Still Killing Myself

by Kalista on 2012-06-20George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - Toronto

I've waited for 3 years for Tommy to come to Canada. I got so busy with a new job, when I went to check the time of the concert, it had happened 2 days before. I missed it. I have to go on his site to see when he might be coming again. However, I have no doubt that, had I made it there, I would have been amazed. Talent on the guitar? Well, anyone that might be reading this is well aware; from ballads, to classical, to the Sanitarium Shuffle. And his showmanship is right up there to. He engages and just plain has fun with his audience. You might not be able to sense my disappointment, but it's there, and it runs deep. I'll go through 3 boxes of sticky notes to remind myself the next time. Please tell me there will be a next time. Very Sad Fan

This is possibly the best concert I've ever been to! A guitarist's guitarist. A composer's composer. A coverer's coverer.

    Tommy Emmanuel - Amazing!

by vicariousone on 2012-06-12George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - Toronto

Finally, I can say I've had the pleasure of seeing Tommy's fluid mastery of the accoustic guitar in concert. I'd seen his You-Tube videos and that's what drove me to see him live, so I was thrilled to see that he'd added Toronto on his tour. Effortless. Poignant. Percussive. Harmonic. Sublime.

I'd See This Concert Again in a Heartbeat !

by Arotru on 2012-06-11George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - Toronto

The venue was small enough to seem like a cozy and intimate show. As for Tommy Emmanuel.......there are no words to describe the level of talent he posesses. One of the most amazing concerts I have ever attended. If you like fingerstyle guitar, you are in for the treat of a lifetime! I only wished I had brought the whole family. If he ever comes to the Windsor-Detroit area, I will BE there.

    Tommy Delivered

by NorthAugustaErwin on 2012-06-11Casino du Lac Leamy - GATINEAU

Having discovered Tommy on YouTube a few years ago it then became my fantasy to watch this amazing incredible guitarist live and his performance at the Gatineau Casino made this possible. Tommy did not disappoint and is even better in person than on YouTube. The sound and acoustics in the Casino Theater were just awesome. Tommy received several standing ovations from the very appreciative crowd who were part of History as I do not think an amazing entertainer like Tommy will come along in a long time. He is like the Elvis or Beatles of music with his guitar. His amazing Day Tripper version was classic Tommy and it was done with perfection. If you closed your eyes one would swear that there had to be at least 3 guitars on stage. Tommy even sang a few songs and he even has a good voice. An incredible Concert running from 8 to 10:30 is what I call getting your money’s worth.

This was an amazing concert!! If you haven't seen Tommy Emmanuel live then you are missing out on an unforgettable musical experience. In my mind Tommy is the the best fingerstyle guitarist there is and his finesse and expertise along with the rapport he has with the audience makes an evening you will always remember! Go see him whenever you get the chance...you will not be disappointed! You'll soon understand what CGP stands for! The venue at Lac Leamy was also really good, there was not a bad seat in the house !

by BluesBoy on 2012-06-11Casino du Lac Leamy - GATINEAU

I had seen a few of his Youtube videos so I had quite high expectations, but he is a consummate entertainer and took time to introduce some of the lesser known tunes and he didn't let me down. I'll go to see him again...
