Toronto FC History

Toronto FC played their first season in 2007 and became a perennial MLS Cup playoff contender after adding Italian soccer star Sebastian Giovinco in 2015. In his first year with the team, Giovinco became the first Toronto FC player to win MLS' Golden Boot, MVP and Newcomer of the Year awards, en route to the team's first-ever playoff berth. The team reached further success the following year by reaching the MLS Cup Final, then won the championship in 2017. That victory, coupled with their winning of the Canadian Championship and Supporters' Shield matches earlier in the year, made Toronto FC the first team in Major League Soccer history to complete the rare feat known as the domestic treble.

Toronto FC have been most dominant in the annual Canadian Championship, in which the club has taken home the Voyageurs Cup eight times, including in 2020. Individual player accolades include Rookie of the Year for midfielder Maurice Edu in 2007 and Most Valuable Player for attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo in 2020.

Toronto FC at BMO Field

Toronto FC is the city's first Major League Soccer team and the first Canadian team in the league. When BMO Field, the team's home stadium, opened in 2007, it was already the largest soccer-specific stadium in Canada. The venue has since expanded to accommodate over 30,000 fans. The Eastern Conference team's most vocal and visible supporters club, the Red Patch Boys, started rallying online back in 2006 before the team had even played its first match.

  • Fabulous game...servers need much work.

by TorontoJC on 2009-07-14BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The venue is great. Not a bad seat in the house. The level of sport is improving all the time. Wonderful athletisism. The fans give great support and add to the enjoyment of the entire event. The bad news? The guy who served me beer in the stands? Terrible. The cost of a can of beer is already 10 bucks...ouch. Then, he pours part of it on the ground so he can get it in the small cup!!!! Would it have been too much to ask to wait a few seconds for the foam to subside or simply to not turn the entire can upside down to begin with? Disgraceful. Some training of the servers is definitely in order.

by Pigtunia on 2009-07-13BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

TFC games are one of the best Toronto sports experiences around. The crowd is knowlegable, and enthusiastic. The stadium has wonderful sightlines and the concessions are terrific. A great experience (even with a loss)!

  • Poor match

by mattyob on 2009-07-13BMO Field - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

Time to rip up the fake turf and put real grass in - unpredictable bounce does not make for a good game.

  • TFC rocks!

by ciaobella on 2009-07-13BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

TFC games are amazing. They have something to offer for everyone - soccer fans, families, drinkers...it's great! The stadium is handy to get there by either public transportation or by cars. The view of the city on the west side of the stadium is stunning. The food and the beers are reasonably priced. Best sporting entertainment in the city!

  • TFC vs. Chicago Fire

Really good fun; great atmosphere. Shame they lost.

  • TFC match

by Terrieno on 2009-07-13BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a true remarkable game. For it was the first time i sat in the supporter sections. Unbelievable is all i can say. I have never been a sporting event where the fans a as great as TFC fans are. They stood, they cheered , they sang, they heckled, they made for a exiting game that much more exiting. The game itself is lost in the whole experiance of going to the pitch, tailgating, watching the team play and looking out and seeing TFC gear on every single person who is there. Truly going to a TFC match is one thing you must do no matter if your like the game or not. For there is no Fans like football(soccer) Fans.

  • Soccer on BMO

by CChris on 2009-07-13BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

For my son and I, this game was the first live soccer event we attended in Canada and I was a little worried. However, all my worries went away as soon as I stepped into the Burlington GO station. Red flags, red shirts, red jackets.... It seemed more like Canada Day than a regular soccer game. The holders of this flags? Children fro 4-5 year old, adolescents, parents and grand parents! At that moment I felt safe for my son and wished I got the season pass. The game itself was wonderful! (We won). During the game there were 2 groups of fans that continously cheered for Toronto FC in a very entertaining way but very civilized. Overall, my son and I enjoyed the event.

  • Game was great, TFC won!

by Shar on 2009-07-12BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Of the four TFC games I have been to, this was my favourite. It was the first afternoon game I went to, the weather was great and TFC won.

  • Great Afternoon for TFC!

Great weather. Nice win. Everything came together for TFC on a fine Saturday afternoon!

  • TFC = Amazing

    by 1010101010 on 2009-07-12BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were unbelievable! First row behind the bench. I would definately recommend this event and I already have! I will be back again next year!

  • Best TFC performance at home

by TFCRocks on 2009-07-12BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best game I have personally watched at BMO Field. I had yet to see my beloved team win until this day.... In fact early on New England scored first off a terrible defensive play and that had made me and my brother believe that it was another loss for TFC since they are very stingy on goals in general (again, except for the Montreal game).... but the quick answer and the come back win sparked by Guevara and De Rosario was absolutely brilliant. Also, my seats were right next to where the standing area is on the north end... really nice view and affordable when they are only 70 per person for such a view

  • FC EASILY DEFEATS NEW ENGLAND REV.

by METAPLEXOID on 2009-07-12BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Knowing that Toronto FC has never defeated New England, it was an exciting event to be there to witness FC pull through and come up with their first win over the Revs. The 2nd half of the game proved how well Toronto FC can come together as a team and really dominate their opponents. The crowd in my opinion is the number 1 crowd in any Toronto sport even i have been too. The atmosphere and hearing the crowd cheer sing and stomp their feet to have the stadium rumble is something you have to be there to experience.

  • Amazing Game

by GreatGame on 2009-07-12BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The game was amazing. Couldn't have been a more exciting match between the two teams.

  • Toronto FC is the best sports $$ spend in Toronto

    by Sadmom0 on 2009-07-11BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The fans, the stadium, even the food and of course the world's most 'beautiful game' make going to a Toronto FC game the best use of your sports dollar in the city of Toronto. Last minute tickets got us the unused Wheelchair seats - so basically front row near the end zone, where without a doubt, the fans rival anything seen in Europe. The rain held off and we had a great time even though our heroes lost the game.

  • Another night at BMO field

by davham on 2009-07-11BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

It was a cool rainy night at BMO, the place was packed and the supporters were in full voice. It was probably my 8th or 9th time down there, and just like the first time, it was magic. I can't recommend a TFC game at BMO enough, there isn't a bad seat in the house and the atmosphere is electric.

  • Montreal Impact sucks

by canadiantarheel on 2009-07-11BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I was able to watch TFC beat the Montreal Impact which was great!

  • Toronto FC a good event...

by Kphilc on 2009-07-11BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I loved the atmosphere of the stadium and fans. The crowd was loud, but not rowdy or unruly. You can bring a date, your parents, your children, or just friends. Make sure you bring your own rain poncho if there's a chance of rain. The ponchos at the stadium are expensive.
