Fantastic movies, mediocre organization by TIFF
by SK on 2024-09-16Roy Thomson Hall - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5As always, I enjoyed the thrill of seeing new movies from all over the world. TIFF is my favourite time of year in Toronto!
However, as someone that has been attending TIFF for 25 years, I found the organization by TIFF to be truly disappointing. As a member purchasing tickets, I signed in at the appointed time and date using the link TIFF provided -only to discover it didn't work at 10 am. TIFF didn't send out a new link until almost an hour later (at which point most tickets for movies I wanted were gone - I had somehow found another way on Ticketmaster to get to the TIFF screenings). The benefits of being a member of any sort seem to be limited this year - I had to try 3 more times to get a few other movies (which is understandable and not unusual normally, but I strongly believe if the original link sent by TIFF to members actually worked at 10 am, I'd have had more options to select from the first time). Then, when arriving at the TIFF Lightbox for a movie, I asked 3 different TIFF officials/volunteers about where the extended line-up was way down the stairs for a very popular movie that day - none of them knew where we were supposed to line up and given the fear of being late to the movie despite having assigned seats, that was an unnecessarily stressful moment. While I understand that most are just volunteers for TIFF, there needs to be better education for them on being helpful and answering customers' question as we are paying A LOT of money to see TIFF movies.
Another issue: I found that the movie synopses on the TIFF website didn't give a good reflection of what the movies themselves were about. I noticed some errors in descriptions of the stories in the movies, as well as purely unhelpful "summaries"that didn't tell the public very much about the substance of the movie. Because of that, I'm convinced some smaller excellent films didn't get the same full interest that they otherwise could have (one example - Superboys of Malegaon - excellent film, really enjoyable, but with a TIFF synopsis that did not do it justice).
Last, doing this over Ticketmaster just means the usual Tickemaster isuses - also the resale values of tickets on Ticketmaster going above $200 is absolutely ridiculous and not what TIFF used to stand for - one of the few film festivals accessible to the general public, which is what makes TIFF so unique and amazing.
I'll keep going to TIFF because I love the movies and the thrill of seeing ones that may not come to mainstream theatre. But TIFF really needs to improve its organization of the festival to make it less stressful for the public, who are eager to get tickets and attend the festival.
