Toronto Maple Leafs History

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cup Championships and seven division championships, with more than 60 former players, coaches and executives in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Maple Leafs were one of the NHL's founding teams in 1917. They originally were known as the Arenas and then the St. Patricks before taking their current name in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought the franchise.

The team won two Stanley Cup Championships in the NHL's first five years and returned to the finals in 1932 behind the "Kid Line" of eventual Hall of Famers Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau, and Busher Jackson. In 1942, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the first of five Stanley Cup Championships under coach Hap Day. The addition the following year of center Ted Kennedy helped the Leafs maintain their dominance, and resulted in another title in 1951.

The Leafs won three Stanley Cup Championships in a row starting in 1962, and another in the 1966-1967 season, thanks to a roster brimming with players who would end up in the Hall of Fame: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Allan Stanley, Bob Pulford, and Frank Mahovlich.

The team returned to the conference finals in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, then again in 1998-1999—the latter trip powered by eventual franchise scoring leader Mats Sundin. The Maple Leafs have appeared in the Playoffs every year consecutively since 2017. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the Playoffs a total of 74 times to date.

  • Skills Crowd Electric

by FiveStarCO on 2009-12-07Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, What a fantastic outing, with the 18th annual Skills competition yesterday. The crowd was electric from the beginning and the wave that circled the lower bowl almost 10 times if not more was a moment to be a part of, watching some of the players on the ice join right in along with the wave was a humbling moment, the true fans were there…… I bleed the blue and white, from the TML tattoo on my shoulder, to all the Jersey’s hung with care, they give me/leafs nation something that can’t be explained, we are DIE hard fans with heavy hearts, we want this team so badly to win, but we just continue to grin………….. and bare it. So for anybody that is like me, then this is the event to go to, My friends and I will do it again next year. I went to a Ottawa, Toronto regular season game last year where we won 3-0 and it was the worst experience I had in my life, the fans at that game booed D.A #11 for Ottawa more than they cheered for there own team, I remember on a PK early in the first and the leafs cleared the puck and I started to give a cheer for there hard work and I stood alone, so needless to say I just kept my mouth shut from then on out. So again I say to the true blue, this is an event with a great price and a fantastic atmosphere, so for the 19th annual Skills competition next year lets make it an even better atmosphere, grab the children, the neighbours, and anybody who just flat out love’s there LEAFS, let’s blow the top off the ACC and remind them that generally the TRUE blue are sitting at home watching there games on T.V ………………. .

  • Great for young kids

    by Af07 on 2009-12-07Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

My 5 year old loved it !!! He could see the players faces and the variety of events kept him engaged and excited. The event was the right amount of time.

  • A great time had by all

I took my son to the Leafs Skills Competition. We had a blast! I couldn't believe how many current and old Leaf players showed up. My son was thrilled and so was I. Way to go!

It was fun to watch and it was priced right to be able to take the whole family. My kids had fun cheering for the players. The only thing we didn't like was that they had kids from various hockey teams out there too. We didn't pay or come to see other peoples children on the ice. It took away from the event.

  • Toronto Maple Leaf Skills Competition

by leaffan on 2009-12-07Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

It was good, but I thought there could have been more activities with the Maple Leaf Hockey Team as opposed to some of that other trivial stuff that we had to see. The Leaf Team looked like they were bored for some of the time and probably would have liked to have a more active and frequent part in the activities and this is what the fans want anyway. I would rate this as average.

  • Skils Comp

by GrandpaC on 2009-12-07Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was boys day out. Grandpa and friend and 2 grandsons, who cannot buy or afford tickets to an actual game. Had gold seats and the kids (9 and 18) were both in awe. They love hockey ad thought this was the best thing ever . Friend has already told his sister about it for next year to bring her son ad 4 grandsons who are all into junior hockey. They found the arena amazing, the actual seeing of the players up close was a dream for them and they had a thoroughly wonderful day. Only disapointmet was that the players did not mingle or be available to the fans.

  • Leafs Lose a good game

by ShizNick on 2009-12-04Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The leafs faced the Buffalo sabers for the first time this year and if it wasn't for their goalie the boys in blue just might have squeaked out a win. Unfortuneitly though, Ryan Miller of the sabers put on an outstanding performance and earned his team a shut out in what could have been a win for the toronto maple leafs. The atmosphere was excited and alive though as the game got underway. You can definitly feel a rivalry between fans of Buffalo and Toronto probably due to the geographical proximity we have with one another. When Buffalo scored you could hear the saber fans yelling and leaf hearts breaking. With every close shot on net Toronto got, excited cheers went up followed by the sigh of dispair as yet another close call was stopped by their goalie. It was a thrilling night eventhough Toronto lost 3 to 0 and thats saying something.

Watched a lot of leaf games over the years (Gardens & ACC) Ballard years, Fletcher to Burke, while Fletcher brought a contender in '93, the future was sold. This team is young, energetic and exciting and if Burke doesn't cave to the whining leaf fans and sell the future, they will actually have something to truly cheer for!!!

  • Seats very crap but we made the best of it!

by LeafsFanatic on 2009-12-01Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I had purchased seats in the 313 section. Those seats are some of the worst seats you can find in the ACC. There's a huge concrete wall that blocks your view of half the ice. Luckily we just went down to section 311 and sat in the first row!!! Seats 1+2+3+4+5+6! We ended up scoring amazing seats in the first period, which made the best of the experience.

Great game, great seats to watch the leafs lose!!!

  • Leaf Game

    by Patricia88 on 2009-12-01Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The game itself should be fun...yet because the Leafs are not quite exactly the best team, or anywhere even near it, it made it hard to enjoy. It is also pretty dissapointing to watch fans leave when the 2nd goal was scored by Buffalo..everyone just got up and left!

  • 3-0 Leaf loss at ACC

by drbeave on 2009-12-01Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Die hard leaf fan who got his dad tickets for his 50th. We have never been to a leafs game at the ACC. When we got there we found we had standing room only seats which for us was fine, we would stand the entire time anyways. We were at the very top of section 319/320 and the view was not obstructed at all as far as the ice went. I don't think there is a seat in the house that can't see the ice. The scoreboard was blocked by the set of luxury boxes in front of us but they did provide a mini screen for the parts we couldn't see right in front of us. Overall it was well worth the price of admission, the leafs were good the first two periods and we really had a good time. We plan on going again when we can get some more tickets, standing room only or not.

  • AMAZING GAME!!! ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOK

by GruesomeReaper on 2009-11-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best leaf games I've been to with a friend in as many years i mean COME ON 61 SHOTS and still loose in OT after coming from behind. If it wasn't for Roloson the leafs would have smashed the Isles. Even though we were standing for the whole game it didn't matter cuz the leafs were so good that night that it was hard to stand in one place. Overall AMAZING GAME!!!

  • great game

I WILL NEVER GO SEE A LEAF GAME AGAIN.......I WAS TOLD NUMEROUS TIMES TO STOP CHEERING FOR MY TEAM......I SPENT OVER 2OO BUCKS ON THE TICKET ,NOT TO MENTION THE AMOUNT OF MONEY ON FOOD AND I WAS TOLD THAT IN GOLDS...YOU CANNOT CHEER OR MAKE NOISE FOR THE TEAM.....ITS A HOCKEY GAME.....WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO.....VERY DISAPPOINTED....MY KIDS WERE DEVASTATED.......IT WAS AWFUL AND EMABARRASING...IT SAYS NO WHERE ON THE TICKET THAT CHEERING IS NOT ALLOWD!!!!!!!!!!RIDICULOUS!!!

  • Standing room for 50$ Per ticket??? Really???

    by mummy101 on 2009-11-24Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

I got tickets and went down to the ACC to enjoy a Leaf game and went to the gate printed on the ticket. I walked up the stairs to the row that was printed on the ticket, then there were no seats, I had bought the standing room only tickets and couldn't believe that they would expect people to stand during a three hour event. I almost left, then I remembered that I spent 100$ for a pair of tickets. I stayed for the game, and the game was pretty good, if the game was not a good one I would have left. I would never go to a game and stand ever again. It really was horrible.

  • by Luup22 on 2009-11-24Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Obstructed sight in section 311 is really OBSTRUCTED. Look for a free seat in other sections during the game...
