Toronto Maple Leafs History

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cup Championships and seven division championships, with more than 60 former players, coaches and executives in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Maple Leafs were one of the NHL's founding teams in 1917. They originally were known as the Arenas and then the St. Patricks before taking their current name in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought the franchise.

The team won two Stanley Cup Championships in the NHL's first five years and returned to the finals in 1932 behind the "Kid Line" of eventual Hall of Famers Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau, and Busher Jackson. In 1942, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the first of five Stanley Cup Championships under coach Hap Day. The addition the following year of center Ted Kennedy helped the Leafs maintain their dominance, and resulted in another title in 1951.

The Leafs won three Stanley Cup Championships in a row starting in 1962, and another in the 1966-1967 season, thanks to a roster brimming with players who would end up in the Hall of Fame: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Allan Stanley, Bob Pulford, and Frank Mahovlich.

The team returned to the conference finals in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, then again in 1998-1999—the latter trip powered by eventual franchise scoring leader Mats Sundin. The Maple Leafs have appeared in the Playoffs every year consecutively since 2017. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the Playoffs a total of 74 times to date.

Splendid evening with the victory going to Toronto

  • Amazing

    by Axel999 on 2009-11-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Coming from Europe, I didn't know anything about ice hockey but yet I had a great time watching this! It was a great show in a great and friendly atmosphere ! Not to mention victory of the Toronto team at penalty shootouts!

  • Not Tonight Ovechkin

by RebeccaAB on 2009-11-22Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing game because the Maple Leafs were not expected to win. Everytime Ovechkin hit the ice everyone started saying "now we will see a goal." The best part; THEY WERE WRONG. I kept saying, "not tonight Ovechkin, not tonight." It was more important for the Maple Leafs to win against Washington then any other team. So, what now? If the Maple Leafs can beat the Capitals then they have the potential to win against any other team. We just need them to do that. Can't wait for the chance to see them play again,

Picked up tickets last minute in gondola seating. Great seats if you are heading out with a group. There is a private bar in each room. No worries about the line for the bathroom as there are plenty outside each room.

  • horrible seats

by mybellrung on 2009-11-15Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

I know it said obstructed seating on the ticket but I wasn't expecting not being able to see almost the entire one end. Couldn't see the net or anything. When the play went into that end had to watch on the centre ice screen. Why anyone would design the seating that way is beyond me. So be warned, if you get leaf tickets that say obstructed seating, take a pass on them. Unless you like watching haif a game.

  • Leafs vs. Flames

    by MattyC2009 on 2009-11-15Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Despite the Leafs losing (again, unfortunately), the entire experience was great. Staff at the ACC from security to food service were exceptionally friendly. Great venue. Now, if only the Leafs can pick up their game a notch or two :)

  • Next Year

by mhersh on 2009-11-15Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

Burk made some good picks but the accumulation of missfits under Ferguson and The Silver Rat or the silver Weasel or the Silver whatever his name is will take years to get off the books. I want the team to win but until we have more with talent like Kessls, Kaberles, Whites and more with grit like Beucheman, Komiserik, one Orr is perfect we will have to wait. I will not cut up the players we have because they played their hearts out. Hopefully Schenn develps into the Hard nosed elite defensive defensemen he is casted to be. I wish someone would teach him how to fight. Burk said he would buy grit first and talent second. I cannot fault him because the grit players certainly are tough and do their job. Kessel certainly is a special talent. If some of the prospects rise up and our cap space next year yields the talent we need on our front end we may just be something special. I am sure White and the Monster will be here next year. Hopefully of the rest who are fighting their guts out a few good men will rise up and stay with the team to join the new UFA's and the elite of our prospects to give the leaf nation pride again so we can stop watching old movies before each game.

  • Leafs ruin Red Wings!

by Wagglehanger on 2009-11-12Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The game was amazing! The Leafs played a really excellent game and the Red Wings just couldn't match them on the night - after watching the poor Leafs performance against the Lightning on 3rd November we weren't expecting anything special from them but were looking forward to a good game from Detroit - it was the complete opposite and a really fantastic result - nobody would have expected a 5-1 victory for the Leafs. Excellent game, great atmosphere and the whole city was buzzing when we left.

  • Leafs vs Wild

by Gedd on 2009-11-12Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

    - Gustavson was very good especialy in the first - Backstrom was okay but making him first star was a compliment to the Leafs that they did not deserve -- most of the shots were easy and from the perimeter. - Nobody works harder than Blake but he seems to be in over his head. - Leafs worked hard most of the night but were on the outside mostly. - Wild dominated the ice positionally with their physical play. Wild had command of the ice and consequently did not have to skate as much as the Leafs. - Leafs were soft -- probably due to lack of mental toughness.

  • 2 MIN. REMAINING IN THE THIRD PERIOD.

by rafter on 2009-11-11Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The leafs seemed tired and lacked spunk. Over 50 percent of the crowd left with 2 minutes left in the third. That is when the fans got motivated by a burst of energy with a two man advantage and the goalie pulled. The most noise from the fans in the game with only half the #, Give kudoos to the refs. My son (8 yrs. old) and myself (over 50) did not notice that there are 4 one the I not like the 3 system many years ago. When some say that the ice surface is too small for all those "big" guys, it takes talent to stay out of the players way, call the game and to be unnoticed. Still have not given up on the leafs.

  • Leafs vs Red Wings in Gondola

    by benny123456 on 2009-11-09Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome time. Did not know what to expect when bought the tickets. You are taken up by elevator to the top above the purples. You then walk across a little bridge in the gondola and a hallway takes you to Gondola boxes 1-6. There is 3 rows of seating in each gondola box. 3rd row is barstools along a bar, 2nd row is in front of the bar in seats, and the first row is down some stairs right on the edge of the gondola box. From Row 1 you can see the entire arena, and you are directly across from the Foster Hewitt Gondola, where the announcers, Brian Burke, etc are sitting. The view is awesome, and there is also a bar inside the gondola, and they have pizza up there. In the main hallway there is a couple washrooms, so you do not have to go far at all, and won't miss much of the game. Tickets were $150 each which is a little expensive for being up so high, but overall it was worth it and the leafs played an awesome game. Would definitely recommend these seats.

  • what an awesome game!

so as we were driving down to the game we were thinking "will they win?" or loose?" I had a feeling that they would win and let me tell you they didnt let me down! what an experience watching the leafs from the first row behind the goalie. Thanks Ticketmaster

  • It was a Hall of a night

    by ParlayKing71 on 2009-11-08Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Great game. Leafs win 5-1. A special night, with some of the greats coming back, and the newest inductees being presented to the crowd. With Detroit in town, of course Steve Yzerman got the biggest cheer of the class of 2009. About 3,000 Wings fans got disappointed by the mighty Leafs. I wish that the ticket prices were a little lower, but then again, I wish that I won the lottery. Neither's gonna happen.

  • Wings/Leafs

    by Wingnut2000 on 2009-11-08Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Great pre-game ceremony! Amazing to see all the legends together on one ice service. Unfortunate game outcome! 5-1

  • Obstructed Seating is TERRIBLE!

by Solarbear on 2009-11-05Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

I just saw the Leafs vs. Lightning game from the obstructed viewing seats. Although these tickets are marked down, they are just not worth it. A 21st century arena with obstructed seating, all so that a fortunate few can watch from a luxury box! In most of the seats, you can not even see one of the goal nets! Since you can't tear down the building, these seats should at least be better advertised as "see only half the ice"...and they should be $5 or something a little bit more reasonable for the experience.
